Thoughts on the new rule changes coming with the new big box?
Also, off topic, but that box is coming out in my birthday month!
I'm largely positive on the new rules — I haven't dug fully into them to find anything I'm weirded out by tbh; maybe the Ferro-Lam nerf?
I do know that I'm happy they're setting ilClan as the new default era, and that they're recognizing that new players are 100% able to handle more advanced rules even when starting out — 3025 games are pretty boring as a starting out measure; simple, yes. But boring.
Another huge plus: the 'Mech selection in the boxes is peak.
And that's awesome! Happy early birthday!
A disclaimer: I am undoubtedly rather biased as to my feelings about the ferro-lamellor armor nerf.
Granted, it is actually only a very minor nerf—if I recall, the only playtest change they have adopted is to make it no longer immune to the special effects of armor-piercing (AP) Autocannon ammunition (AFAIK it's still immune to the special effects of Tandem-charge Warhead SRMs and 'Mech tasers). It is also not the only armor that will have its immunity to AP AC ammunition removed, right?
My main concern is definitely going to be AP AC ammunition, in fact. I am very happy that autocannons across the board will be getting better in various ways, but I am nervous to see how the AP ammunition buffs specifically shake out in practice.
Everything else about the new boxes has me very excited. I only worry that I might not snag my set in time, and have to play catch-up with CGL fulfillment.
I am fairly positive on the mobility changes! As much as I enjoyed the simulationist vibe of the skidding, it wasn't... fun? Explaining it to new players instantly killed their enthusiasm for playing in built up cities and that sucked! I'm glad to see the backing up and standing up changes. I'm actually super happy with the autocannon changes. I love autocannons a lot but they can be a little frustrating. I'm interested in actually trying special ammo now, for one. The missions thing I am kinda interested in, actually. Have you heard about those? One of the difficulties I've had introducing BT classic flavor in my local scene has been that folks are used to the paradigm of games like Warhammer 40K and aren't sure what to *do*, so a framework for "objectives" to hang on to was appealing to me to use with them.
The Asset cards... Do you have thoughts about those? I am mixed! My wife and I had fun with them, my wife loved loved loved using them and it made her actually be interested in non-mechs! But some of those cards feel... I don't know, kinda vibesy? Like they're either ender or overpowered? It was an odd feeling and hard to explain. It did kinda align them with how they feel in MW5, I suppose. I do love the combined arms element of BT so I don't want to lose out on infantry and Vs being interesting.
