āThe Surprise ofĀ a Knight,ā the first known queer āstag film,ā shows how gender, sexuality and desire have always been fluid
Waugh recalls, on his first watch, being ādelighted by the unexpectedness of this glimpse into [the lead characterās] world,ā and heās drawn conclusions about this onscreen heroine after careful study. āShe was a trans sex worker, obviously,ā he says, āvery beautiful and very much in possession of herself. The film is very frank about her fucking, as well as her costume performance and the revelation. I think there were a few rare glimpses of trans characters [in stag films], but this was unique.ā
Once when I was in undergrad, someone described something as āproblematicā in class and our professor was like, āThatās cool, but āproblematicā doesnāt really mean anything. It means that the thing youāre describing has a problem, and in and of itself thatās not bad. Art, especially, should always have problems, or else itās not interesting and not art, either. It sounds like youāre trying to say that this is bad, but you donāt want to say ābad.ā Is that right?ā
So from then on whenever one of us called something problematic, he would make us talk it out until we could name the ābadā thing we were hinting at. In this particular class, 7/10 it was some type of oppression, and the remainder was like, āIām uncomfortable because this is very new/confusing/pushing boundaries that made me feel safe.ā
Once we stopped calling things āproblematicā and stopping at that, class got way more interesting and... we all had to say, like, āthatās racistā or āthatās misogynisticā or āew capitalism grossā out loud, which a lot of us had never done in a classroom before. Or we had to be like, āUhhh... Iām not sure whatās so bad?ā and confront our own beliefs and that was maybe even more useful.
Anyway. Whenever I see the word problematic, I canāt help but think of this professor being like, āGood starting point, now letās get specific.ā I think when we have to commit to saying āthatās ___ā it requires a lot more careful thought about the truth and impact and complexities of whatever weāre claiming. Sometimes there really is some bullshit afoot, and also sometimes itās art, and it should be full of problems, because thatās what art is.
the secret cheat code for women is realizing you dont have to date men
this doesnt just go for lesbians it goes for bi women and straight women too. i cant even count how many times straight women have told meĀ āi wish i was a lesbian so i didnt have to date menā but guess what ⦠u Dont have to date menĀ
to be clear this also isnt necessarily saying āgo date women instead!!ā its just sayingā¦. u dont have to date men. u dont have to be dating women in order to not date men! in fact if ur not attracted to women at all please dont date women just as a substitute for men. but if dating men isnt making u happy⦠u dont have to do that. u dont have to make a space in ur life for men
im singlehandedly destroying every mans mental health by telling women its ok to not date them
āIn 1899 Hungarian Michael Haberlandt, a professor of āethnologyā wrote a letter to his friend in which he detailed his observations of same sex and gender variant behaviour among the people he had encountered in Zanzibar. This letter was translated and published in āBoy-Wives and Female Husbands: Studies in African Homosexualitiesā in 1998. Records like this, despite the homophobic assumptions of its writer, show just how diverse and queer Africa really was before the import of western attitudes, laws and prejudiceā [Source]

Nino: Trans Joy! Feral Magazine, Cape Town, 2024 by Steve Marais
āA raw, documentary-style interview and photo essay detailing the life of a black trans man in South Africa. The interview with Nino covers his entire journey: being kicked out of his home, experiencing homelessness, working on the docks, navigating the healthcare system for his transition, and becoming an accidental social media activist.ā Ayanda Ninoās instagram
its the year 2013 and you can 3dprint a dildo that is also a bong and Dennys has a tumblr and most phones have TWO cameras now, one on the front and one on the back and there is a nonzero chance that we will have a reality show set in space within 5 years.
it appears that gentle death still standsĀ sentinelĀ at the end of our lives and casts a shadow back over us as if he were interposed between us and a fantasticĀ radianceĀ but OTOH crowdsourcing has made it incredibly easy to buy a āminimalist walletā made of aircraft-grade aluminium weave and hey
dennys has a tumblr, so you can keep up with dennys, and new dennys developments, in realtime

I fucking hate it here
For those of you with android devices, you can use the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) standalone app control program to get rid of all the bloatware, data mining, and AI crap - no coding needed!
save
There are also Android-based alternatives like GrapheneOS and LineageOS, which are pretty easy to install. These are unfortunately available for a more limited range of devices (Graphene is ironically Pixel only, while Lineage supports more), but it's very worth checking out whether one of them might work for your phone.
GrapheneOS is a security and privacy focused mobile OS with Android app compatibility.
LineageOS Android Distribution
Typing this from Graphene now, in fact. But, both of those take the Android Open Source Project, without all the bloatware--and largely de-Google the whole thing. They give you much more control over privacy and what the apps you choose to install can do and access on your phone.
I know Graphene sandboxes everything, including the optionally installed Google Play Services which a lot of apps unfortunately require to run. (Lineage uses an alternative to Play Services instead.) So, you can install what would normally be unacceptably intrusive apps and just lock them away from pulling any funny shit with your data, or phoning home. Including the couple of Google things I do still keep around.
I also prefer running much more transparent, privacy-respecting open source apps where possible. Besides the transparency, I'd rather avoid the shitty tech corps entirely where I can. There are pretty good alternatives available for a lot of the usual suspects.
AlternativeTo lets you find apps and software for Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, iPad, Android, Android Tablets, Web Apps, Online, Windows Tab

The AI bubble isnāt like the internet bubble
My next book is The Reverse Centaur's Guide to Life After AI, out next month. Pre-order it now, including as a DRM-free audiobook or ebook, at my Kickstarter, and help me continue to prove that DRM-free isn't just the right way to reach an audience, it's also the best way to reach them.
One of the surprise breakout software products of the early web was Lotus Notes, a kind of primitive precursor to all-in-one office productivity suites like GDocs, Office365, etc. It was so important that its creator, Ray Ozzie, was promoted to Microsoft's Chief Software Architect, succeeding Bill Gates himself:
https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/podcast/knowledge-at-wharton-podcast/the-man-who-would-change-microsoft-ray-ozzies-vision-for-connected-software/
People who remember Notes tend to deride it for its clunky user interface and demi-functional administrative tools. But what made Notes so central to Microsoft wasn't its polish ā it was the fact that Notes represented a brokered peace between IT managers, who wanted mainframe-like control over everything their users could do with business equipment, and the users themselves ā workers who kept smuggling internet-based tools into the enterprise network on the very sensible grounds that they had a job to do, and these were the best tools to do it.
The arrival of internet-based tools ā especially ones that ran in browsers ā represented a major challenge to IT departments, who had been long accustomed to dictating terms to their users. If the IT manager and the compliance department decided that the best way to manage disclosure and leak risks was to block all email attachments for outside users, then that was that: no one could send those attachments.
But after the internet arrived on the corporate desktop, employees who needed to get documents to supply chain partners and customers could treat these IT policies as damage and route around them. Just fire up your Hotmail or Yahoo mail window, or hop on MSN Messenger or ICQ or AIM, or drop the file on an anonymous FTP server and send the link to your counterparty. Job done!
IT managers hated this, and to be fair to them, they weren't (always) wrong. These outside tools came from a variety of untrustworthy sources, including malicious sites that pushed virus-infected versions to their users. Also, by evading firewall rules with these tools, users made it impossible to achieve the compliance goals that IT had been charged with enforcing, and it was IT's asses on the line if the company got in trouble as a result.
Foundationally, IT was being asked to do two irreconcilable things: they were supposed to be enabling workers to get their jobs done, and they were supposed to be stopping those workers from doing things that could harm the business. This can't be done, because the only way to eliminate the possibility that a worker will take an action that harms the business is to gag that worker and lock them in a dungeon. Workers need flexibility and freedom to achieve business goals, and that flexibility and freedom means that those workers might (deliberately or accidentally) thwart the business's goals.
I'm not multigender because I think it's "radical" or special. I don't call myself a fagdyke because I think it's fun to say slurs. This is my gender, and it's just as real and personal to me as yours is to you. I am so tired of seeing posts which throw around the spectre of the boygirl fagdyke as someone to be mocked and belittled and not taken seriously, this idea that we are just here to have fun and "look like gremlins," the constant implications that we are choosing this lifestyle because it is fun and easy rather than that this is just a fact of our life which causes people (like you!) not to take us seriously. It's just blatantly transphobic. I'm sorry that you need to take shots at someone else to feel good about yourself, but it is disgusting behaviour.

The main reason Iām pushing for people to stop using the term āpedophileā and instead use the term āchild sexual abusersā, is because since all discussions of child sexual abuse focus on this idea of an evil person who is just out to get kids because they are sexual attracted to them, it makes it hard for kids who where sexually assaulted by people who donāt fit that description to realize they were sexually assaulted.
It didnāt register for me until recently that my experiences of being forced to strip naked multiple times at the mental hospital to be ācheckedā when I was 14 was sexual assault, because the people who did it were nurses/doctors who clearly didnāt find me sexually attractive but instead used it as a form of humiliation and control towards children they deemed as āunrulyā and āuncooperativeā (ie. children who asked to be treated like people). I thought only people who fit into this idea of a child attracted pedo could be child sexual abusers, so I thought my experience didnāt count.
Stepping away from the idea that there is a pedophile boggieman and instead highlighting that anyone can be a child sexual abuser will help more people realize that their experiences are sexual assault.
my stepfather would openly sexually harass me and my siblings at dinner while also loving the fantasy of killing pedophiles. whether he personally found our abuse sexually gratifying was frankly irrelevant to whether it traumatized us. whether he would be considered a pedophile or not doesn't change that he committed sexual abuse of children
I think in his mind there was a type of horrible person out there who does horrible things, and because he didn't think of himself as fitting that category, his actions could not be judged
I keep getting hurt but Iāll staunch the bleeding! Itās so suffocating but I swear Iām still breathing! My heart feels wrong but look itās still beating! My vision is fading but what colors Iām seeing!
