For better or for worse, Shen's new comic has been on my mind like weevils on pastries.
I'll be using both he/him and she/her for Shen in this post.
Aside: Shen's mentioned being in therapy for gender stuff and has drawn a girl self-insert several times. Many trans people I know, myself included, appreciated people using the right pronouns for us prior to us ourselves even knowing we were trans. I'm using both partially for that reason, and partially, if Shen somehow sees this, she can see whether he prefers one set over another.
WITH THAT ALL OUT OF THE WAY.
Shen's newest comic project, The Boy From Venus. I'm so conflicted about it.
On the one hand: Shen's an egg. She's already done a long comic, about a literal wolf in sheep's clothing, that takes a blatant transmisogynistic caricature and deconstructs it. The wolf is of no danger to the sheep; the other sheep, even after learning that he's a wolf, accept him as one of them.
We've only seen the first part of the comic, and leaving it on such an inflammatory cliffhanger is the perfect way to get people to sub to Shen's Patreon and read Part Two straightaway.
On the other hand.
I want to trust Shen. I do. I know a deconstruction, if that's what he's going for, takes time. But right now, what we have is this:
Super duper feminine clerk, who the femcel protagonist clearly read as a woman, instantly outing himself as a guy.
Title of the comic: The Boy From Venus. You know, Venus, as in ♀️. As in, "boys are from Mars; girls are from Venus."
Like, coming from ANYONE ELSE, I would deem this as part of the endless "so funny that this MAN looks like a WOMAN" train. Trap content with a lesbian femcel instead of a gay man.
But the fact that it's Shen writing this is what makes me pause. I want to trust him! She's been posting a LOT more gender-exploratory stuff. Egg or cis guy, so far, Shen has not been transphobic, much less transmisogynistic.
The fact that the two clerks our protagonist imagines look like "after" and "before" pictures of the same person is intentional, right? They both have red hair and light eyes. If they're not the same person, why bother colouring them so similarly? (Relatives? But given that this deals with gender... the former seems more likely...?)
If I keep talking, I will run in circles like this all day.
TL;DR: I hope (and want to trust) that "cis ally" and notorious egg Shen "Shenne" Comix will make this comic that toes the line on some very old transmisogynistic tropes with care.

whenever she faces a social interaction she can't handle she starts acting mysterious and saying stuff that sounds like it has implications so the other party comes up with something on their own and reveals what they think she's talking about. instead of just admitting she doesn't know something. because it would make her seem less mysterious and that's not cool
she asks her scythe to act like she's deeply obsessed with her in a messy codependent master/weapon yuri situationship whenever her scythe takes on human form because she is a massive himejoshi. there are times her friends are in danger of actually dying and chooses not to intervene until the very last possible second because yuri could happen between them when they're pushed to their limits and giving their all
there are MULTIPLE TIMES she monologues to nobody in particular because she's somewhere she thinks it would be cool to monologue alone, only to have someone walk in on her and take her completely seriously. and then from there she has to act like she knew they were there all along because she would be less mysterious if she didn't act like she knew that.
she occasionally references "the organization" that's backing her. it doesn't exist. she's not even bluffing to make herself sound stronger. she does it because she thinks mysterious organizations are cool and it'll make people think she's mysterious and working in the shadows
there’s one time she defeats an opponent by driving them insane with illusions, all while sitting down and watching from a position of utter control.
she does this because her scythe took on human form and bit and whispered in her ears to tease her and it made her so horny her legs gave out for multiple minutes and she couldn’t stand
