I have flashlights that are borderline unusable because, while the hardware is fine, the company that made them (hello OLight!) demands that you install and login to the storefront before you can access the configuration software.

But they don’t actively maintain the software or provide any of the new utilities that they promise. They are mostly using it as a way to turn off functional hardware to try and force you to upgrade.

We are living in a society where you can pay for something and the manufacturer can turn it off because they’ve decided that you’ve owned it too long .

I’ve just had to warn my family not to buy electronic door locks because the chances are, if they are Internet connected they will be disabled once the company that owns them has decided that they’re not making enough money charging you a monthly fee to open your own front door.

This is part of an ongoing trend to turn money into something that is no longer usable by everybody .

The eventual aim is to be able to pay people company scrip: If you lose your job, or badmouth the company, or disagree with the dictator, they severely curtail what you are allowed to buy, and from who.

And at that point, you have to pick sides – do you want to be able to have drinking water from Coca-Cola, or Pepsi, and whose package allows you to buy Doritos, and use your smart oven to cook food? Because it won’t turn on unless you use the app to scan the appropriate barcode from the company who now owns your ability to eat drink, heat your home, and wear clothes from brands that they approve.

Sex and gender are two separate things, each made of thousands of components that are often malleable. Essentialism has taken its root deeply in the queer community and it's a damn shame. It also poisons so much of the rhetoric, because maintaining a sense of "biological sex" that is binary and not malleable allows people to disguise anti-trans laws using AGAB language and/or "biological male". It's also worrying that people excuse this as a petty issue or a source of "validation", because this is the actual language being used by lawmakers across the world to justify transphobic laws, destroying both intersex and trans people's futures. This applies beyond HRT, acknowledging that people not on HRT may choose to change individual components of their sex or may have attributes generally associated with one sex or the other. It's a complex problem, but the first step is acknowledging that "biological sex" is way more complicated and dynamic than anyone wants to admit

It's like even if I could magically swap my sex chromosomes right now it wouldn't actually do anything as far as medical transitioning as it wouldn't change my hormone production to estrogen.

Trans people don't even understand this. If there were extensive genetic technology to give you your desired set of sex characteristics, they wouldn't change anything.

What DOES cause changes? Well, your entire life is a series of signaling pathways, telling genes to turn on and off in sequence as you develop. Everyone already has the full set of genes to make "male" or "female" stuff, it's just a matter of grabbing the right signaling molecule, and applying it as a way of shutting on or off those genes, and then gene expression causes cell changes causes body changes and...

even if someone WAS just lazy and simply didn't want to do anything but lie on the couch and watch tv, they should still have these things. it's irrelevant whether some people aren't actually lazy because everyone, including hypothetical lazy people, should have their basic needs met.

if we have the resources to do it, there is no defense of letting people die because they don't want to work, and much less because they can't.
