Obviously there has been a lot of discussion about Niall stopping Ruben when he's talking about how he would cum when he father abused him and how those moments were the closest he ever felt to someone. And it's pretty clear that Niall is thinking about Ruben's violence against him and how Ruben is the person he feels the closest to. And how he was never able to acknowledge that to himself let alone anyone else. But what I don't really see being discussed and what I feel is pretty crucial is the fact that Ruben was describing abuse. He was describing abuse from his father and how that was the closest he ever felt to anyone. And Ruben was never able to tell anyone other than Niall about it. And it came after Niall revealed his feelings towards men to Ruben. And Ruben's abuse towards Niall is very pointedly never mentioned by anyone.
Niall himself doesn't even bring it up when pointing out how Ruben referred to him with homophobic insults. He only mentions the words Ruben said. And Ruben wouldn't accept the role he played in Niall's struggles. But then he starts talking about his abuse at his father's hands and Niall is able to handle it at first. He is able to give Ruben comfort and listen. He even calls Ruben his hero. It's not until Ruben starts talking about the closeness he felt that Niall shuts down. And I think entangled with the complicated feelings that Niall has for Ruben (the fear, the love, the desire, the anger) is also the repressed acknowledgement that the things Ruben did to him weren't just brotherly horseplay or banter. It wasn't just sexual either. If the feelings that Ruben was confessing to having were in the context of what both Ruben and Niall recognize as abuse at his father's hands, then Niall would have to acknowledge that what Ruben did to him was also abuse. And what does that say about his feelings towards Ruben even beyond the shame of sexuality? Beyond his repressed feelings towards Ruben in general? So of course it was too much for Niall. And he continued to repress those feelings right up until the very end to the point of his own destruction.
its so funny cause the only thing hes ever wanted was ruben. lol. it was licherally the only thing. and he very much did try not to know that and much less take it. he in fact tried his whole life to run from that very fact 👍 and now here we all are :)))))))
I literally can’t remember the exact quote from Mona, but the whole “he’s our Ruben or he’s our guy” or whatever Mona says is super interesting to me. The way Niall and Ruben purposely use the word “brother” to describe each other constantly has been theorized to be a barrier between the two of them. So it’s assumed that the barrier extends to Mona. That she would say something more akin to “well you know your brother…” or something like that because it places that solid barrier for what relationships between the three should look like. It would imply Mona as Ruben’s wife because the distinction is being made that Niall is Ruben’s “brother”. But her saying “he’s our guy or he’s ours” OURS. It implies that Mona sees Niall in a space similar to hers in Ruben’s life. This is when I remembered that Niall lost his virginity to Mona. That they had been intimate before the whole cheating thing. But Ruben was present. He was the one calling the shots. AND THE NEXT DAY ITS JUST THEM LAYING BASKING IN THE SUN, SMOKING AS IF HAVING PILLOW TALK AND ITS OK BECAUSE ITS JUST THEM And when Niall and Mona are intimate that last time, Ruben is not present. But the mess he leaves is. The ghost of his anger is present there. And when he finds out it feels like betrayal. BUT NOT BECAUSE NIALL HAD SEX WITH MONA. BUT BECAUSE NIALL HAD SEX WITH MONA AND RUBEN WASNT THERE TO CALL THE SHOTS THIS TIME. AND A CHILD IS (WHICH IS ONE OF THE ONLY THINGS RUBEN VIEWS AS A SECOND CHANCE) IS PRODUCED IN HIS ABSENCE BETWEEN TWO PEOPLE WHO MEAN SOMETHING TO HIM. AND HES NOT THERE. The whole sliding the flowers across the table as a “congratulations” to NIALL on the baby and not Ava. GOOD JOB NIALL FOR HAVING A DICK THAT PRODUCES CHILDREN, THAT I CANT DO. AND WE SHARE EVERYTHING. WE’RE “BROTHERS”. WHATS MINE IS YOURS AND WHATS YOURS IS MINE. The whole having Niall in his home KEEPING HOUSE. Mona offering Niall Ruben’s house coat. The assault of Niall’s body with the hood ornament of his expensive ass car.The paying for everything Niall has. LOCKING THE BARN DOOR SO THAT IT CAN ONLY BE THEM. WHATS YOURS IS MINE. GUYYYYYSSSSS ARE UNDERSTANDING AND SEEING THE LAYERS THERE? OR JUST LIKE CHOOSING TO IGNORE THAT?

And the millionaires aren't going anywhere, for the most part.
Excellent update on year 2 of this program:
Last May, we were very happy to report that the Millionaire Tax instituted in the state of Massachusetts was working out very well, not scaring off all of the rich people, and raising funds for necessary education and transportation initiatives. The state had raised $1.8 billion — $800 million more than they predicted — and none of the terrible things the naysayers had predicted happened at all. But how are things going a year later? Even better! The tax has now generated $3 billion more than expected, for a total of $5.7 billion that has been spent on projects that are positively benefiting Massachusetts residents and “being used to bridge repairs, bolster literacy programs and address the transportation system’s budget deficit.” In case you need a refresher, the tax is a 4 percent tax on anything people make over a million dollars.
Official Post of Massachusetts
This article has a great way of framing tax alarmists for the hypocrites they are. It’s woven neatly through the whole article, but this quote really sums it up:
Sure, people complain. Rich people are always going to complain about taxes. But they never flee the way they threaten to, largely because whether or not they like to admit it, they prefer to live in the kinds of areas where things are made nicer by the taxes they don’t want to pay.
Tax the rich. Most of them won’t notice and even more of them won’t care

cleaning along desire paths
Fantastic advice!! And something I’ve realized I’ve been doing for myself these last 6-7 years, even though I never had a name for it.
Seriously, this is such a great way to go about organizing your home.
I really can’t express how much easier your life can be when you accept that there’s no objectively right way to do this kind of stuff, especially when you let go of the idea that it’s a moral failure when you can’t do something the “correct way” nor is it evidence of you being lazy.
Working with (leaning into) your natural limits and instincts can do wonders for you in your day-to-day life.
The Trump administration is cynically exploiting calls for stricter AI regulation to pass broad censorship measures at the federal level.
So, in terrible news, Trump's trying to pull some strings to pass this massive internet censorship bill, featuring all the kinds of internet censorship we're terrified of, including mandatory ID for accessing basically any website, specifically to crush state regulation of AI, because apparently this man will always see the moral bottom of the barrel and start digging.
So, if you live in the US and hate censorship and AI you know what to do, contact your congresspeople and tell them do not fucking dare let this through or so help us god...

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.

my most sick and twisted fantasy
I was honestly a bit nervous to draw and post this one, because it's such a deep rooted and genuine issue I struggle with. It's a thing I wish could be fixed in some way, but I feel pretty comforted it resonated with so many others too
I think this is just a trend everywhere but I've been very frustrated this week by how much admin work is being outsourced to me as the patient/customer.
My orthodontist tells me I can make an appointment with the surgeon. I call the surgeon. They tell me I need a new referral. I call the orthodontist. They do a referral. I call the surgeon. Referral didn't come through. They tell me about their special unique system we have to use. I call the ortho again and walk them through the referral. I call the surgeon. They say the referral was missing some details so they have to do it again. I call the ortho.
The insurance company calls me about repair shops. I give them the name of the repair shop which I already gave them yesterday. They say they're not in their system but I can use them, but I have to call the repair shop to ask them to contact the insurance company. I call the repair shop and they say the insurance company is supposed to email them.
I feel like at a certain point these constant fetch quests become unreasonable?? Is it too much to expect these groups to communicate with each other instead of making me run back and forth between them???
Made this post and then the new property manager (who started on Monday and only finally emailed us today because I sent a vaguely professionally hostile email to her boss because I hadn't heard anything and was not convinced she existed) asked for a list of open action items which her predecessor should have had but apparently wasn't keeping track of, which I learned when I met her boss and provided her with the list of open action items, which I guess tragically died in a fire in the last 2 weeks since she was sitting at my kitchen table, being menaced by the skull. How many people's jobs am I doing now
The phrase arrived in my head so completely formed and concrete that I couldn’t believe it wasn’t already established in the lexicon, but at
It has a name!!!
#I have several frustrations with the 'executive function theft' framework that I haven't been able to articulate#Like it's absolutely extremely a real phenomenon I think framing it that way points in the wrong direction #And I think 'outsourcing admin work to nowhere' actually gets a lot closer.
#Everyone has massively cut their support staff everwhere.#supposedly automation makes up for this gap except that it literally doesn't at all#You can fire 90% of your office staff and replace them with a phone tree#And all that happens is everyone hates it and it sucks and it makes your service completely unnavigable#But like. Who is going to stop you?
#Everyone has done this in every industry and field. There is no alternative you can turn to preferentially because they actually staff thei#phones. No one does!!#Let alone any means of communication outside of phone calling. Which remains the absolute bottom line of getting any info out of anywhere#You can cut your office hours because everything is on the website! Which you haven't updated in 5 years and the plugin broke and
#Basically the same principle we're seeing now in the rollout of AI has already been the status quo. The idea that you can just get rid of#all human support services. Replace them with some automated function.
#On the corporate side the logic is clear: once you have a monopoly (and who doesnt) the only way to increase profits is to cut costs#which means fire people. And if the quality of service tanks who cares because everyone's stuck with you anyway.
#on the government services side it's a bit more opaque.... I guess it probably mostly comes back to cost-cutting again.#Budget pressure. Reforms designed to strangle services.#Plus the longtime practice of throttling government support by making the logistical burden too onerous to handle#By way of wretched clauses about eligibility and the proving therof and etc
#And there's a very real and brutal class component also.#Everyone making these firing calls is totally insulated from the effects of their decisions because they have personal assistants.#Meanwhile the people dealing with the most of this shit are anyone trying to access social services of any sort#or even just do or get things cheaply.

(reformatted into paragraphs for easier reading) these tags get to the root of the problem in a way I'd like to see more people acknowledging, honestly.
I saw a post the other day that was pointing out how people selling AI frame AI as some genius worksaving innovation or as a tool based on whether they want to cater to the ego of middle management types whose entire job is answering emails, because obviously the people whose jobs are most able to be replaced by AI are middle management email answering jobs.
I think what is missing from the understanding that "middle management types who answer emails can easily have their jobs replaced by AI" thought is that while they are being paid to answer emails, their jobs actually consist of a bunch of soft skills which they are not getting acknowledgment or payment for, in a lot of cases due to this work being done by women and other marginalized people for whom this work is the only thing allowing them to achieve middle class status. The DEI purge happening in the American federal government is happening on the devaluation of soft skills that communication based jobs need to be done well, because the job can be automated to be done badly by moving the actual work of that job to the "customer".
