if I feel like absolutely torturing rocky then I sometimes like to imagine a scenario on erid where a few months into The Scurvy Era grace sits him down like "hey pal. there's a chance that the scientists here won't figure out how to meet my nutritional needs any time soon. I would love it if they can! but it might not happen. and I don't want to die very slowly and painfully of starvation. now listen to me. ideally I don't want to die at all. but more than that. I do not want to die. of starvation. I don't need anything from you to help with this, I can address it on my own, but if this becomes a real problem then I am going to solve it. Do You Understand What I Am Saying Right Now." and rocky isn't even allowed to immediately become evil about it.

grace and rocky on the journey to erid having a (marital) spat and grace gets a roll of painters tape and tapes over the floor like newt and hermann in pacific rim and says that's your side of the mary this is my side of the mary. and rocky (trying to start shit) is like well grace didn't tape over the ceiling so if you look at it from rocky perspective i can just go on wall and up and here and whole ship is rocky side of ship. so grace is like oh you think you're so smart huh?? watch this. and tapes a circle around rocky but then rocky JUMPS the ball like flipping a skateboard (radical!!) and grace is like OH SO THAT'S HOW IT IS!!!!! and builds an elaborate tape polyhedron to contain him but rocky "accidentally" knocks it over (rocky didn't touch, statement. grace bad at make model. model fall over. very flimsy. embarrassing). so grace just tapes all over the xenonite ball until rocky is a ball of tape. and rocky (muffled behind tape) is like grace know rocky can still see, right?? tape does nothing. so then grace gets the heavy duty duct tape and tapes his whole ball to the floor (forgetting rocky is 400 pounds) and then rocky rips himself up immediately and goes careening around the ship but he took a whole floor panel with him and now he's picking up socks and pencils and dust and saying disgust. disgust. disgust. and basically grace created an enormous lint roller slash torture chamber. no one wins

one of my number one writing pet peeves is when a writer doesn't think about the massive complications or implications of something they put in on a whim it drives me nuts

The implications and the complications are the most fun part, too...

it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible

and yet they keep making movies with the hopes that one day humanity will discover a way to watch them. it's so inspiring

I’d die on the hill that “stranger danger” is a deeply unhelpful mentality to have. “Ooooh everyone is out to get me they’re all gonna perpetrate harm that’s actually more likely to come from someone I already know. I better never talk to anyone in my community who I don’t already know, just to be safe. I’m sure there are no other biases interwoven with this mentality” like oh my god human traffickers do not just randomly spawn in every parking lot. You don’t have to go solo hitchhiking across the country but you also don’t have to live in fear that every guy on the street is the knife man who’s gonna get you. Like have situational awareness, yeah. But most of the time the guy on the street is not knife man he’s actually just a guy on the street and he’s probably pretty chill, and you’re driving yourself crazy by living in a constant state of unnecessary fear.

Like always safety comes first, especially if you’re in a marginalized group more likely to be targeted by random people around you. But that’s different from stranger danger. I might even say that stranger danger is something that contributes to marginalized groups getting targeted by random people. Which strangers do you find distrust worthy? Why? Does vague distrust justify harmful actions in the name of self defense? Stranger danger draws everyone away from more important issues of safety (underlying bigotries, systemic injustices, abuse in the home, etc) and towards an amorphous boogeyman that has no solution, because it’s not the real cause or culprit.
