I just started chapter 10 of Parzival. Gawain is performing pericardiocentesis on someone?!?!
truly an honor and a privilege getting to witness everyone's first time in public ever every single time i go grocery shopping
Tbh germ theory DOES sound crazy. Like if you told a regency-era nobleman that tiny creatures lived on the surface of everything and THATâS what causes consumption, theyâd be like âah, I see you are a lunatic. Would you reside in my hermitage? Rantings and ravings do so amuse my guestsâ
But if you told a Medieval person this they would probably go "Ah, so when the miasma settles on surfaces it gains evil life. I understand."
Yeah, actually, it would probably be pretty easy to explain germ theory to a Medieval person as tiny evil spirits that live on everything, but they can be purified by soap and water, or by alcohol, because that is why God has granted us those things. And because they can float in the air, if you cough or sneeze after they have infested you, that can cause them to infest others. And when you are sick, the angels God has deputized to defend the bodies of His beloved children are at war with the evil spirits, and, sadly, sometimes they lose, but the best way to help your angels win their battle is to rest, drink plenty (this would probably be small beer in this time period, not water, because the water was also infested), stay clean, and for the sake of God do not allow anyone to let your blood, for the angels need that blood in their war against the evil spirits. Bloodletting is good for some types of illnesses but not the kinds caused by the tiny evil spirits.
boiling as a sterilization measure is also easy to explain. water returns to the air when heated and it rises as steam back up to the floodgates of heaven; we know God created the world in seven days, He's not up there making more water every time it rains. it circulates. the returning of water to heaven also purifies the water of unclean and malign influences. you know wormy water from a muddy puddle will kill your kid. you know you wouldn't wade into a bog and have a slurp. water that remains in the low places of earth absorbs all that is unclean from our waste and it may also sponge up new diseases from hell, we're not totally sure about that one, but it seems likely. God set up the heavenly water cycle so that the earth's waters wouldn't totally fill up with gunk.
what does this have to do with boiling your surgical tools? well look, the boiling water releases bubbles of steam which carries the malign influences up to heaven. you boil a knife, you send all the miasmic particles off with the steam to heaven. if you rinse the knife off in a bucket the water isn't hot enough, the particles go into the water and then right back on to the knife. you gotta boil it to get the particles all the way away. how can a tool or rag or a bed have miasmic particles on it when you can't smell them? humans have a lousy sense of smell. look at your dog on the hunt. are there no rabbits in the woods just because you can't smell them? we know that miasma is carried on the air, and is what makes stench so dangerous, and we know that humans can't smell worth a damn compared to dogs cats horses etc. a dog can smell if a rat died in a corner of the room last week. you can't. do you think licking the spot where the rat died is going to go well for you? luckily, what humans lack in snout we make up for in brains. we have extra brains where our sniffers should have been. God set that up for a reason.
and why does a rinse with wine spirits work? man, look how fast alcohol evaporates. my guess is that because wine contains a lot more vice than water, it evaporates a whole lot faster, in sort of an equal and opposite way that a rock falls faster than a feather. if you want the miasmic particles to get off there FAST, you dunk it in something that's going back to heaven at a gallop.
what's up with honey? it just preserves things against corruption. doesn't clean them off. honey doesn't evaporate at all. probably because bees don't sin. it's not good for ridding a tool of particles-- it's sticky-- but fine for preserving anything you don't want to go to heaven OR hell. this is why you wash the wound with wine spirits or purified water FIRST, to sluice the miasma out, then slap the honey on AFTER. and boil the damn bandage, too. you wouldn't put a rotten door in a sound doorframe and expect it to keep out bandits, would you? cmon.

On May 18, 1980, Richard âDickâ Lasher shot this epic photo of the eruption of Mount St. Helens. Lasher was forced to abandon his Pinto and flee the giant plume of ash on his motorcycle. Lasher survived.
"It was my fifteen minutes of fame."
I wanted to learn more about this photo! I thought it was wild that his dirt bike was still attached to the car in the photo, because I'd want to be on it before I aimed the camera.
Indeed, by the time he was unhooking the bike, the car was on fire.
Dick approached the eruption zone on purpose for a photo:
On the morning of May 18, 1980, Lasher, who was also a freelance photographer, headed towards Mount St. Helens in his bright red Ford Pinto. Lasher told Smith that his plan was to drive his Pinto as far as he could, then take his motorcycle, precariously hitched to the bumper, even closer. âHe tried to get as close as possible,â Smith recalled. âI don't think at the time he knew just how close he was.â
He went back the next day for more photosâbeyond the safety zone while rescuers were trying to locate and evacuate survivors of the eruptionâand was promptly arrested by a helicopter team.
The article features one of Dick's original prints of his photoâuncropped with a little more upper tree line.
At the time it was written (2023), the journalist and Dick's former co-workers were unable to track him down:
No one I spoke to has been in contact with Lasher for decades. I tried calling multiple Richard Lashers in Washington state but had no luck â itâs almost as if heâs disappeared. âNeither I nor anyone I know has been able to get in touch with Dick, and we have tried,â Cooper told me. âCouldn't find an obituary for him either, so maybe he is still out there.â
I didn't think to search the caption from the original post, which seemed to quote Dick: "It was my fifteen minutes of fame."
The author of the 2023 article finally spoke to Dick in 2024:
I hope everyone involved in the decision to make astronauts use Outlook on their way to the moon never goes a day of their lives without stepping in a fire ant colony
I forgot like every part of the seder plate I was responsible for tonight which means we had things on there such as. lao gan ma (bitter herb) and a banana (gay orange).

I think that if a story ever pulls a line like "You could have destroyed your magic with a stunt like that!" or "Pushing ahead with your magic too quickly can have dangerous consequences!" then the story should be obligated at some point to show me these magically disabled people.
All stories should have more disabled people, honestly, because disability is a basic part of being alive! What am I supposed to think of any given fictional community if I never see any elderly people, any retired people, any injured people, or any disabled people?
But seriously, a lot more fantasy stories specifically could really stand to show people who have been burned by magic to various degrees and are now living with the consequences. I'm too used to the protagonists fainting and sleeping extreme recklessness off without issue.

Thatâs Gorditos! Any family that agreed to the baby vs. burrito photo got a free meal.
Theyâre my favorite Mexican restaurant in the world. We used to live 4 blocks from them. God I miss their tomatillo enchiladas.
If youâre in Seattle, go to the Greenwood neighborhood and get some food. You will be very happy.
"Friends outside of Minnesota please read. I'm sharing a post written by a personal friend and medical doctor: Friends outside MN, you need to know what is happening here. Everyone knows that ICE shot and killed a woman here on Wednesday. But thatâs not the only thing thatâs going on:
ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike. Yesterday they abducted two US citizen employees at a suburban Target, one who was begging them to allow him to go get his passport to show them.
ICE is going door to door in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, asking residents where their immigrant neighbors live. Read that again. If it sounds like something out of your high school history textbook, thatâs because it is.
ICE is targeting schools and school buses. They pepper sprayed teenagers and abducted two school staff members at the high school up the street from me on Wednesday. Police are literally escorting school buses to ensure children can get to school and home safely. The Minneapolis Public Schools have moved to virtual learning for the next 4 weeks because itâs unsafe for children or teachers to physically come to school.
They are targeting hospitals and clinics. Patients are scared and are cancelling their appointments or just not showing up. Kids are missing their checkups and vaccines, folks arenât getting their cancer care, etc.
They are smashing windows in cars and homes.
ICE is increasingly picking up Native Americansâagain, targeting folks based on skin color alone.
They are arresting and beating legal observers. A friend of a friend had her arm broken yesterday. Folks are showing up at local hospitals, brought in in ICE custody, with severe injuries that are absolutely inconsistent with mechanism of injury reported by ICE. (Think: patient appears to have been beaten unconscious, while ICE agent says he slipped and fell.) I canât emphasize enough that these ICE agents do not have warrants. There are 2,000+ agents here and they are simply hunting for anyone thatâs not white. It doesnât matter if youâre a citizen or a green card holder, they will kidnap you first and ask questions later. But the community is fighting back.
Protests are happening every day.
Community groups have been leading know-your-rights sessions for months, often to packed venues.
Whistles are being distributed by the thousands, carried on keychains and worn on coat zippers, always at the ready to be blown in warning if ICE is spotted.
Drivers are following ICE vehicles, blaring their horns in warning.
Businesses are locking their doors even while open to keep employees and customers safe. As I type this, Iâm standing guard at the locked door of our neighborhood burrito joint while I wait for my takeout order, so the employees can focus on their jobs. The place is packed with neighbors supporting this small business.
Anti-ICE signs are posted everywhere. The community is making it crystal clear that ICE is not welcome here.
Parents and neighbors are standing guard outside schools, organizing carpools, and escorting kids to and from school on foot.
Parents of kids in Spanish-immersion daycare (there are a LOT of these daycares here!) are keeping their kids home so the teachers donât have to take the risk of coming to work.
Churches and community groups are holding fundraisers to buy and deliver groceries to families who donât feel safe leaving home.
Mutual aid money is going out to folks who canât make rent because they canât work or because a breadwinner was abducted, or who need a warm place to stay after their homeâs windows were smashed. THAT is what is happening here. This fight is ongoing and itâs horrifying to watch. But we are not backing down. To my friends in other cities and states, donât think for a minute that this wonât happen in your town. It will. Be ready. Learn from us, as we have learned from Portland and Chicago and New York. Fight back. Donât let us get to the last line of Martin Niemollerâs poem.â -Grant Boulanger

crows and ravens have demostrated a knowledge of âfairnessâ - and demand equal treatment. researchers did an âinequity testâ on the birds. some birds received cheese, a high value treat, and others received a piece of grape, which was not desirable. those who received the grape started refusing to accept it. the researchers then performed an âeffort controlâ test. some birds were given a piece of cheese with nothing required of them. other birds could choose from cheese or a grape - but had to exchange a token for them. again, the birds that were being treated unfairly refused to cooperate.
