Say hello to the adorable arbiter snailfish (Careproctus kamikawai). Snailfishes are a diverse and thriving group of fishes with over 400 described species. How well do you do under pressure? It's probably nothing compared to the limp eelpout! Adults usually live at depths of around 2,500 m, so they're subject to about 250 of pressure- that's 258 kg per square centimenter! Or, for a little fish like the limp eelpout, it's like being crushed under a large motorcycle. Fortunately, they have evolved thin, squishy bodies which can handle all that pressure no problem.

Shit is bad, but today, I learned that California's kelp forests have made a major comeback with the help of scientists, fishermen, and hammer wielding volunteers.
It's a win for habitat restoration. It's a win for marine life. It's a win for all of the people who helped make it happen.

Frankly i think paleontologists have been far too quick to dismiss the theory that trains used their many long carriages like snorkels, keeping their engines above water as they crossed the shallow inland seas of the north american continent millions of years ago. The claim that their sturdy steel and aluminum frames would not have been able to support their lungs under the water pressure ignores the fact that many freight train sets include reinforced or even armored cars, which could have provided ample support to the vascular system.
I think it would be really wonderful if seagulls were constructed more like bottles with a mystery inside. What I'm imagining is that were you to catch one, you could then unscrew its face and there would be a glowing gem nestled in some sort of socket. The Core of the Gull so to speak. Then you could swap that around with other seagulls, and after screwing the faces back on they would fly off as if nothing happened. Hm... Is this too esoteric, or do some of you see what I am getting at?

The Trump administration's plan for new offshore oil and gas drilling in federal waters is expected any day. If finalized, drilling could begin off the California coast as soon as next year.

📣 California residents: Tell your lawmakers to vote YES on AB 1448—closing loopholes that let old infrastructure fuel new drilling. Submit by August 3.
📣 Everyone: Tell NOAA to keep California's coastal protections strong. NOAA needs to hear from everyone who loves the California coast, no matter where you live. Public comments are due August 22.
