some of you werenāt around for the fan fiction dot net purge of 2002 (when they banned explicit content and mass-deleted thousands of fics) and the livejournal purge of 2007 (when they deleted hundreds of blogs, disproportionately targeting queer & kink content) and it shows
this kind of policing is why ao3 was created
remember, kids, the three laws of fandom are:
- donāt like; donāt read
- your kink is not my kink
- ship and let ship
shout out to gary lineker for causing an absolute meltdown in both the government and the bbc <3
for context: he compared some of the rhetoric surrounding the government's illegal migration bill to that of 1930s germany.
braverman's response: "i think it's unhelpful to compare our measures, which are lawful, proportionate and - indeed - compassionate, to 1930s germany."
and you know... "lawful, proportionate, and - indeed - compassionate" is a weird way of saying "likely to be incompatible with the european convention on human rights (which braverman herself acknowledged)" and "has been criticised by every right-minded person from the archbishop of canterbury to the UN human rights council"
and i don't understand her saying "i also think that we are on the side of the british people here", because like... who are these british people she's referring to?
and sunak similarly saying "it's obviously disappointing [is it?] to see someone whose salary is funded by hard-working [shut up] british licence fee payers using that kind of rhetoric and seemingly dismissing their legitimate concerns that they have about small boats crossings and illegal migration."
who has 'legitimate' concerns other than 'christ i hope that another boat full of literal refugees doesn't capsize in the english channel'? not me! not anyone i know! i want names!
shout out to ian wright too
in case you're wondering, the bill also prevents illegal migrants accessing help if they end up enslaved.
Yep, the shout out should definitely include Ian Wright, Alan Shearer, and everyone else who - when the BBC dropped Lineker from MotD - basically also went āIām Spartacusā and bailed as well in solidarity
(ironically itās a BBC News article which has summed up best why this has turned into such a clusterfuck for the BBC)
AND credit to the players also acting in solidarity too. apparently everyone disagrees with this decision apart from the BBC Chairman and the Tory cabinet
the bbc chairman was put in place by boris with a whole scandal thing that the torys say is absolutely okay - and the rest of the uk went no it's fucking not
Being a calm, gentle, non-reactive person is really hard work, which is probably why many people are none of these things. Personally I think itās worth it but sometimes one does want to just roll around on the floor wailing at the top of oneās lungs
People in my notes who think Iām repressed or dissociating: you will feel better when you learn emotions are not a binary of Not Feeling It vs Being Overwhelmed By It
Ok but How Do I Do That
Learn strategies for enhancing self-regulation skills, and discover the benefits of mastering this essential life skill to help emotional dy
There are many techniques (also, there are drugs)
Emotional regulation is about managing emotions to maintain balance.
A little meatier than the Harvard page but covering the same ground. These pages will give you additional phrases to google for advice
in response to people saying things like "men aren't allowed to cry in public, unlike women" other people will then say things like "women are penalized, not rewarded, for public displays of emotionāthe fact that women are presumed to be overly emotional & irrational is misogyny, not a privilege"
which is often true but like, it's contextual innit. lest we discount the phenomenon of White Woman Tears
I've recently had white women in professional contexts tell me that they were quote "hurt" and "gutted" by what amounted to very minor professional faux pas on my part. I remember reading a white woman academic's essay on Jane Eyre that began with recounting her emotional upset upon having Jane Eyre "taken away from her" by postcolonial / anti-racist scholarship. white women's emotions do have currency in personal and professional spaces in selective contexts, i.e. when wielded against people of colour š¤·š½āāļø

The irony of this new breed of self-righteous AI hunters on AO3 is that they're all just copy and pasting peoples fics into AI detectors, which are all operated by AI and therefore THEY are feeding people's work into the algorithm without their consent and in some cases no doubt circumventing the locks people put on to avoid getting scraped...
Don't copy and paste anyone's AO3 work into third party websites, you're not the good guys in this situation?
Reblog cause FACTS
ācapitalism worksā factoid actually untrue. the 62 people who own half the worldās wealth are outliers and should be eaten.
Absolutely nuts how they made up a number for this satire post and the correction is that reality is *more absurd* than the number they chose
no iām afraid itās even worse than that. 62 was correct in 2016 when the original post was made.
Iām paying to force seven thousand strangers to see a photo of my late husband having fun with his dog. Tumblr Blaze is totally worth it. XD

āTeachers are often unaware of the gender distribution of talk in their classrooms. They usually consider that they give equal amounts of attention to girls and boys, and it is only when they make a tape recording that they realize that boys are dominating the interactions. Dale Spender, an Australian feminist who has been a strong advocate of female rights in this area, noted that teachers who tried to restore the balance by deliberately āfavouringā the girls were astounded to find that despite their efforts they continued to devote more time to the boys in their classrooms. Another study reported that a male science teacher who managed to create an atmosphere in which girls and boys contributed more equally to discussion felt that he was devoting 90 per cent of his attention to the girls. And so did his male pupils. They complained vociferously that the girls were getting too much talking time. In other public contexts, too, such as seminars and debates, when women and men are deliberately given an equal amount of the highly valued talking time, there is often a perception that they are getting more than their fair share. Dale Spender explains this as follows: āThe talkativeness of women has been gauged in comparison not with men but with silence. Women have not been judged on the grounds of whether they talk more than men, but of whether they talk more than silent women.ā In other words, if women talk at all, this may be perceived as ātoo muchā by men who expect them to provide a silent, decorative background in many social contexts.ā

The impression given to me as a high schooler was that expecting to be able to be a practicing Jew was demanding a privilege, and that I should only ask for it if it didnāt inconvenience anyone else
While I didn't grow up Jewish (convert), my experience in the workplace has been exactly the same. I have been very vocally Jewish in all of my jobs as an adult. I had an employer make a rule that only one person from the same department could request off at a time, and then the company moved me to be in the same department as the only other vocally Jewish person on the floor. A month before Rosh Hashanah. The two of us got together and made a plan for how we were going to notify them that we would both be out. Surprise surprise, we both put in a time off request for RH and Yom Kippur, and the company acted as if it were our fault that we didn't "plan better." They even told us that next year we would have to plan better to make it work.
Management knew that we were both practicing Jews, and even understood what it meant bc our manager has practicing Jewish family. But they still decided to move us to work together right before the holiest time of the year knowing their stupid attendance policy. I would have loved to take all Yom Tov days off but this company only gave us 5 planned (unpaid) days off *a year.* They had the audacity to call me in for an attendance meeting because I "used up so much of my time off so quickly" and then ask what I could do to improve my attendance. I told them in explicit terms that I already sacrificed so much of my religious life to be employed by them, I couldn't shave off any more time.
They told me that that was the reason why I was given planned time off, to account for differences in each individual's personal lives. But of course, we weren't open on Sunday or Christmas, and practically the whole workplace was appalled that we were open on Good Friday, so that was the only compromise that Christians and Cultural Christians had to make for their own observances.
āplan betterā šµāš«
Recently in my school district, those three groups did come together to lobby the school board to add their holidays to the school calendar so theyād be days off for everyone! Unfortunately they lost, but I hope they keep trying.
do yāall remember before direct messages tumblr had a dumbass ask limit of 10 per hour and communication was impossible until they introduced dumbass fan mail and we were basically sending telegraphs back in forth trying to communicate those wereā¦dark times
Do y'all remember when they finally gave us direct messages and instead of doing it normally, they gave it to a few people at a time and we had to infect each other with it like a virus
remember when any post with more than like 6 people talking was unreadably smushed except for the last few additions remember when any post of over 500 characters became a link back to opās blog readmore style remember when video and audio posts had about a 10% chance of working when you click play
As a recent user I love finding out shit like this from older users. What the fuck guys???? Why were you USING IT AT ALL?!??
believe it or not, we liked that more
its worth noting that immediately after these updates that made everything better, we were all angry about it

Thereās something so surreal about my parents who are both very smart people and used to tell me donāt give your information to strangers on the Internet and other common sense safety things pretty regularly, just fully giving information to AI freely. Like what do you mean two of the smartest people I know think AI is cool and safe. Generative AI is evil actually.
