The Galapagos finch evolved to be really good at filling ecological niches
Evolution of evolvability is an interesting field. See e.g. Payne & Wagner 2018 and Hansen & Wagner 2023. Stuff you can do to improve your ability to evolve includes:
A modular, redundant genome where genes can be turned on and off conditionally, and where the regulatory elements that decide those conditions can be modified or swapped without altering the sequence of the main gene. This makes it easier to evolve new functional variants and adapt to new conditions.
Related, phenotype plasticity, i.e. the ability for a single genotype to generate multiple phenotypes depending on environment. A species with multiple possible phenotypes can easily split into multiple species specialized for different conditions; even if a phenotype is conditional at first, it can be made permanent by a later mutation (genetic assimilation).
More in general, imperfect correspondence between genotype and phenotype, i.e. DNA-is-not-a-blueprint. A protein can have more than function (protein promiscuity), multiple genes can affect the same trait in a non-additive way (epistasis), the same gene can affect multiple traits (pleiotropy).
Redundancy of DNA (multiple gene sequences result in the exact same protein) and multiploidy (multiple copies of each gene, the functional ones covering the bad ones) lead to the accumulation of mutations, some of which may be beneficial in the future, while limiting the damage of harmful ones.
Sexual recombination (fertilization to mix different lineages, and meiosis to make unique rearrangements of your parents' genes) increasing the genetic variability of offspring, while also limiting the buildup of harmful mutations (which would be an issue with a simple increase in the mutation rate).
Symmetry and modularity in body architecture, allowing to easily generate many specialized variations of a basic plan (and also making more likely that each variation is functional in the first place: you don't have to evolve each eye independently). Arthropod segmentation seems especially good, but all animals and plants have this to some degree.
Organisms that have short generation time, unspecialized diet, high environmental tolerance, and high dispersion capacity tend to get all the best niches first.

Important reminder
This reminds me of the fact that "Ancient Egypt" goes back so many thousands of years, that the most recent "Ancient Egyptians" were already studying (even more) Ancient Egypt.
Not even the most recent ones. It was an Egyptian prince from the 13th century BCE studying and restoring artifacts from the 26th century BCE.
For context, the last Pharaoh, Cleopatra VII, lived in the 1st century BCE. Prince Khaemweset, known as "the first egyptologist", was as ancient to her as the pyramids and tombs he was studying were ancient to him.
I remember having me mind completely blown when I learned that the "New Kingdom" was pre-Bronze Age Collapse.
This has totally be mentioned in another fork of this post, but it reminds me quite a bit of Ennigaldi-Nanna's museum, a museum in Ur, c. 530 BC, which housed mesopotamian artifacts dating back in some cases to the 20th century BC

Ravings and urges get miscoded over time. Let’s say you’re thirsty, and you live in a strawberry field. Strawberries contain some water and a bunch of sugar so, over time, you may start to crave strawberries when you are thirsty because you get a reward and some relief in shorter time from the need starting than the trek to the stream. This can happen for every need: sleep, food, whatever.
Trevor Noah has a great tip, that when he craves ice cream at night he breaks it down into parts: I want something cold, I want something sweet. He drinks a glass of cold water then waits to see if he still has the ice cream craving. Usually he doesn’t.
So listening to your body isn’t “follow every urge” but “decompose the urge to discover the underlying need.”
If you always feel like getting cozy in bed you may be: cold, dehydrated, and/or malnourished (maybe a need for high calories that are bioaccessible…not processed).
If you do not feel tired at bedtime you may: need to eat dinner earlier because your body is still digesting, need to exercise or go outside more during the day, get the fuck off your screen for an hour so your brain can enter sleep mode.

P.S. notice i said nothing about neurodivergence. Not that it’s not a likelihood but the over-pathologization of behaviors prevents us from taking simple actions to improve our wellbeing. Also, these tips are pretty accessible and applicable to most brain variations.
