Hey England why are your privately owned schools called public schools if they’re not owned by the public I’m confused

No idea mate but I asked my dad and he said it’s something to do with medieval peasants and how they weren’t seen as worthy enough to be part of the ‘public’.

That makes no sense thank you

So I asked him again and basically rich people went to schools that were privately owned. Peasants didn’t go to school. Peasants weren’t seen as part of the public, therefore rich ‘members of the public’ went to ‘public’ schools. Because peasant rights weren’t a thing.

Yeah I used to go to an all girls grammar school but you can only go to those if you pass exams called 11+ exams (you’re usually 11 when you take them) and the people who score within a certain percentage (the highest scoring) will get into that school.

So as a reward for being smart you get exiled to the land of one gender
