stop. analyse that text through the lens of its author's intentions and original historical context. okay now take the author out back and kill them dead and analyse that text as though it were published by your mutual yesterday and is in direct conversation the contemporary discourse that's most relevant to your life. okay now pick your favorite angle of interpretation and come up with the strongest possible argument against it. now imagine that the text is your best friend and that it means you well and that you naturally give it every benefit of the doubt because you're on its side and you want the best for it. now imagine that the text wants you dead and it'll eat you if you don't eat it first. now pretend that you found this text locked away in a cave with no evidence of when or where it came from and you have to divine its meaning solely through its internal coherence and nothing else. okay now address the elephant in the room aspect of the text you've been ignoring because you find it boring or confusing or uncomfortable and become the number one expert on it. now spend forty minutes assigning all the characters dnd classes with at least three sentences of reasoning each. okay now do the cha cha slide.

yβall have got to stop recommending aftg to heated rivalry enjoyers unprompted π this is like recommending cocaine to someone who has eaten a pot brownie once
I wish that ao3 had an option to filter warnings (and tbh certain authors) out like I will never ever want to read it and just seeing it puts me off so much that often I end up closing my browser because that content upsets me so much lmao
There is a way to do this but I canβt recall how to do it. itβs something you type into the box for βother filtersβ or something, I donβt remember. who knows??
Itβs not a great option, and I donβt know if you can sort out authors that way, but itβs better than nothing if someone can reblog this with how to do it!
Alrighty friends! It takes some specificity, but you can do this. Let me show you how!
So I started with going to the Sherlock (TV) section of Ao3. On the right we find this lovely section! ((I know Iβm going over things you already probably know, but I figure this post may go to new Ao3 users, so bear with me.))
Underneath this, I chose sort by Kudos, because thatβs a quick way to find most popular fics, for the sake of this demonstration.Β
With those filters on, we end up with this being our first two results:Β
As you can see, we have Nature and Nurture by earlgreytea68, and The Internet Is Not Just For Porn by cyerus. So what if I am utterly sick of seeing earlgreytea68 on my list? Letβs pretend Iβve read all their fics, or that I just donβt like her, or whatever. I want this author out. I go to this section on the right:Β
InΒ βSearch within resultsβ I type earlgreytea68 into the bar, with a minus sign in front. This gives me the following page, upon hitting the sort and filter button:
There goes earlgreytea68! But now Iβve decided that Crack is just not my thing, Iβm sick of that, too, for heavenβs sake, I want something reasonable in my gay slash fanfiction about detectives that solve crimes about glowing dogs and irish megalomaniacs. Heaven forbid this get ridiculous.
Well, then I add this to my search:
Which gets rid of everything with that tag. My results are now:
Performance in a Leading Role is now my first result!
You can do this as many times as you want; the biggest problem I have is trying to filter out multi-worded tags. For example,Β βSecret Relationshipβ is hard to filter. Better to go with authors you dislike or with words likeΒ βDubConβ.Β
I hope this helps! Also remember that googling site:archiveofourown.org and then adding search terms will mean google searches Ao3 for you, and sometimes that works far better.Β
Say, youβre in your random fandom- I went with theΒ Marvel Cinematic Universe, since Iβve been reading Iron Man stuff recently. Tony Stark is awesome.
But anyway, youβre on the page, and you see that there are 174,774 works!Β That is way too manyΒ for a casual afternoonβs browsing.
And you see that the first one is Peter Parker/Tony Stark and that is not your jam. It doesnβt work for you, or it squicks you, whatever. Wouldnβt life be easier if you could browse without seeing that pairing (or whatever pairing you donβt like)? You can!
First, click on that pairing tag(You may want to open this in another tab, actually.):
and itβll take you to the page for that pairing tag. Click this button:
and then look at the address bar! The actual page is unimportant. Copy the numbers located here:
and go back to the original search page! Down on the side, in the same place you can get rid of other tags, type -relationship_ids:βthe number you just copiedβ
Then hitΒ βsort and filterβ annndβ¦ magic!
The fics with that pairing are gone! You can also do multiple pairings, get rid of any tags you donβt like, and sort it by date or length or kudos, or whatever.
Just a quick reminder that AO3 uses Lucene as a search and index engine.
That means you can pretty much use all the Lucene Query Syntax in the βSeach within resultβ field.
I donβt think AO3 indexes the whole fic for searching but definitely itβs meta data. Combined with Lucenes awesome query syntax you can do pretty much every search you heart desires.
Addtional Lucene Query Syntax that has not been mentioned yet and you might find useful:
Wildcard Searches
You can use wildcard searches within single terms. For a single character wildcard search use the β?β symbol. For a multiple character wildcard search use the β*β symbol.
AND/OR
Lucene allows you to combin terms through logic operators. Youβre looking for fics that are either βreunionβ or βenemies to loversβ?
Just put in >βreunionβ OR βenemies to loversβ< into the field
and you end up with all the stories that are either or but not both.
But wait, now youβre looking for fics that are both βreunionβ and βenemies to loversβ at the same time? Now worries Lucene got you covered.
Just change it into >β"reunionβ AND βenemies to loversββ<
and youβll get all the fics that mention both βreunionβ and βenemies to loversβ somewhere in their meta data (note: itβs not just tags. Itβs also title, summary β¦)
Boosting
You can also boost specific terms when doing a multi term search.
You can use the β^β Operator followed by a number to boost a specific term.
Say youβre interested in fics that are either βfirst kissβ or βbed sharingβ but youβre much more interested in βbed sharingβ fics and feel they are more relevant.
You can use the search >βfirst kissβ βbed sharingβ^5<
to manipulate the order of your results in a matter that the score of every fic that contains beg sharing is multiplied by 5. Therefore all fics containing that term are given priority and shown at the top of the list.
You can also combine all of the above, target specifc fields (thatβs what you did with the βrelationsship_id:xxxβ) and many more things.
For more info about the Lucene query syntax check out Apacheβs Lucene Query doc.
Some of these searches can also be achieved via the βexcludeβ function in the search bar - this offers you for each section (ratings, category, relationships, tags, etc.) the most commonly used metadata for these fics, to check or uncheck (and thus exclude or not) as you please!
But what if you are like βfuck that, Iβm not going to remember that, that is too hard?β
Well then youβre going to go to your browser, find get a GitHub Extension and use AO3 User Scripts.
What are is a Github Extension or Add-on and what are User Scripts?
Well, personally? I like Tapermonkeyβs Add On because I use Firefox and it is stupidly simple
Download Tampermonkey for Firefox. Tampermonkey is the world's most popular userscript manager.
Itβs easy to use. You just install it onto your browser. Point and click, like youβd add any browser extension. It also exists for other browsers because itβs open source and Github users love love love to make stuff people can use.
Thatβs the thing about Github programmers - they function a lot like fancreators - theyβre making stuff for free for pure love of the game and hatred of the supreme overlords.
So once you add that extension?
Youβre gonna search for AO3 Use Scripts
I love the floating comment box. It is literally exactly what it says. The comment box comes with me as I read so I can C&P what I read directly into the floating comment box for easy of feedback.
Thereβs also scripts for making your OTP the main thing you search, showing clicking if youβve read a fic or not (I use this one alllll the time), oh my god, the bookmark maker!? THE BOOK MARK MAKER!!!! That automatically transports the entire text of the summary into the bookmarks you make so you donβt have to?
Each script is going to open to describe - in greater or lesser detail - what it does.
And then there will be a button offering for you to install the script.
I have Tapermonkey. Iβm in dark mode and I have already installed the Bookmark Maker.
So for me the button is in green and itβs saying βReinstall.β So I donβt need to click that to have the Bookmark Maker.
But if I went back and looked at the offerings
And I decided I wanted to Mute Selectively
I would need to Install the Script for the first time.
It is possible for these extensions to overlap in what they do so if you get wonky stuff, it could be that theyβre doing tasks for each other.
But if all you want is one or two specific things? Start here!
And donβt be afraid to play with it! I give you permission to go into the code and fuck around!
Seriously, this is a safe place to play in the backend.
Why? I will tell you why.
Because you can make mistakes in your user script and it will not hurt your AO3. It wonβt even hurt your AO3 User Scriptβs original status. All you need to do is go into your Tapermonkey and remove the app, reinstall it and go back to the first level of the user script! The user script will still be on Greasy Fork, waiting for you exactly as it was the first time you installed it, ready to go!
But I want to stress again the user scripts DO NOT effect the core of AO3.
Itβs just really fun way to play with AO3 without risking your content.
Bonus? It will get you comfortable with GitHub which will allow to to start customizing all kinds of different things in your digital experience.
thank you ao3 for being an archive and not an algorithm. thank you for letting me like things without consequences, thank you for being free with no ads, thank you for having lawyers to defend our freedom of speech. thank you tag wranglers. thank you to all authors and thank you ao3

love when a discord server has custom emojis thats just a pet owned by someone in the server. delightful. our own personal lolcats. do i usually have a reason to react to an image with :PETER: or :chimbus: or :morgandog: ? no. do i enjoy having the option? absolutely.
somewhere out there, a writer is looking at the anguished keysmash and string of emojis you left on their fics and smiling. somewhere out there, somebody's shitty day has been made a teensy bit brighter because of you said you want them to update their writing. somebody who's feeling insecure about their story is sitting down to write a few more paragraphs because you said you loved their style.
you may have left a detailed paragraph about the structure of their sentences and their usage of extended metaphors. you may have also left a "COMPLETE PERFECTION. PLEASE WRITE MORE I NEED IT". we love you and need your validation more than oxygen nonetheless. π«΅ go comment on somebody's fic

Hey, man, c'mere. Listen. Get in real close, this is important.
You're gonna make stuff again. You're gonna make stuff you're proud of. You're gonna make stuff you're excited to share. You're going to feel that overwhelming drive to create, not just the frantic I want to want to you're stuck in now. You're going to have awesome ideas, and you're going to make them into reality. You're going to create again. You're still an artist. You're still a writer. You're still home to the same passion you had before. You'll find it again. It's not gone. It's just resting. Let it rest. You're going to make stuff again. I promise.
Andrew being a goal keeper was quite literally the peak of character building in the entire literature history.
wdym he is THE protector of the team during a game? he is THE last line of defense? he has EVERYONEβs back? and he is AMAZING AT IT?!
and not just in the metaphorical sense (although as establish that too) but down to a literal physical level too. like? oh my god of course the character with the best reflexes that wonβt let a ball past him is the character that grew up abused and constantly aware of his surroundings. and of courseeee the character that has issues with being touched and struggles to protect himself from abusers is the one wearing the most padding on the court.

Shonen authors writing a hetero romance: They bicker... But... They KISS?!?!?! Revolutionary.
Shonen authors writing two male "best friends": They are friends, partners, family. They complete each-other. They've been together for so long it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins, and they know each-other so intimately that they can predict every action the other will take. They're opposites and yet they go together like a pair of gloves, they're yin and yang, they fill each-other's weaknesses and boost each-other's strength. They wouldn't be alive without one another, they wouldn't want to be alive without one another. Even when they're on different paths, they trust each-other blindly. Even as enemies they are willing to put their lives in each-other's hands. Their life goals involve one-another, all the roads in their life lead to their partner. A part of one will always be with the other, no matter how far apart the fates carry them.
I think the weirdest form of fatphobia I keep bumping into is writers suddenly becoming deeply concerned with physical realism when a fat character is involved even in contexts where everybody's physical capabilities are explicitly bullshit. "They're fat, it wouldn't make sense for them to have super speed" and it would make sense for the 98-pound twink to be able to run at Mach Fuck? That's something skinny people can do in real life, is it?
Piggybacking off of this exact scenario to say it's often a plot point in "guy with super speed" media for there to be a drawback off the power that they use up a loooooot of energy and calories using the super speed and therfore need to eat a lot in order to not simply run out off fuel so to speak.
A scrawny guy ordering and packing away enough food for four people in a restaurant is gonna garner attention in a way that people just sort of expect that of anyone they deem "plus size". So, in addition to meaning they Already have more reserves for their power to feed on, it will maintain their cover a lot better to be fat in that scenario. No one will blink twice at you earing a lot and no one would expect that kind of speed or athleticism from someone they assume is "too fat and lazy" to run at normal speeds much less super ones.
Plus. Momentum is a thing. Depending on how "realistic" the physics is in this already unrealistic superhero narrative, the added weight will probably make you more of a wrecking ball and therfore more of a threat to the bad guys than speed alone.
Anyone whose ever watched or participated in any sort of track and field event would know that while "aerodynamics" are somewhat of a factor in things, the difference is negligible when you have the muscles to power through the wind resistance. You could be a bullet or a cannonball; bullet is naturally faster, but cannonballs gonna do way more damage. And when paired with "its literally a superpower, we're already breaking the rules of physics, who cares" I don't think the argument of wind resistance or aerodynamics being an issues with a wider frame really holds much weight (pun not intended).
Really, a fat person with super speed just helps eliminate or lessen a lot of the drawbacks of having super speed while also making it even more of a threat. So they should probably all be like that.
Same with super strength since they are often depicted as having similar "calorie upkeep" needs and because it'll be a lot more "believable" as a cover story to the general public if a big dude lifts a car in an emergency because of "adrenaline" or whatever than if some scrawny tech bro does.
TL:DR make more superheroes fat. It does make perfect sense actually. You're just fat phobic and value aesthetics over practicality while claiming the opposite.
