When I was diagnosed with autism I got a bit sad thinking “but I don’t have a special interest, I don’t have anything that’s always made me happy, that I know lots about and that the people that know me think of when they think of what I like.” And I felt like I was maybe a bit broken (which is silly cuz there isn’t a right or wrong way to have autism, it’s part of who you are and it’s unique to you, the only time it should matter how other people with autism compare to you is when it comes to helping each other deal with/understand how autistic people navigate the world differently to non-autistic people. We should only compare ourselves to better support each other and ourselves by learning more about our similarities and differences.)
But then I realised…
“My special interest is cats. I was born to be a cat lady. This is fantastic!”
