i'm liesl. queer white usamerican-canadian. i grew up in new england (quebec border), and currently live in appalachia (tennessee). i'm in neuropsych and cognitive (neuro)science research, with specific interest in: epigenetics in heritable neuropsych conditions (especially psychotic disorders); addiction research, biopsychosocial models of stress and wellness in individuals, communities, and populations; secular addiction and post-carceral rehabilitation. my current research is on social media, generative AI, behavioural addiction, and models of social and self connectedness in determining outcomes (specifically aiming to describe why some AI chatbot users experience psychosis or are driven to suicide, among other detrimental outcomes).
i am always always always willing to talk about these topics and will in fact invite myself onto posts to host a mini-TEDx on these topics and others in my field. please let me know if you are in my field or an adjacent field, i would love to talk to you about research!

i am disabled. specifically, i am epileptic, and the type of epilepsy i have often impacts my mood, personality, and memory. my mind is organized into a system, which has been present to my knowledge since at least age 6. i do not really engage with plural discourse, mostly because my experience is intimately informed by my autism and the specifics of my CSA experience.
i do talk about my experience as a CSA survivor, typically not graphically, but i do acknowledge the levels of abuse, coercion, manipulation, and my own experiences with my father having severe cptsd and schizophrenia (which would likely now be diagnosed as schizoaffective). i also have cptsd and have awareness of generational trauma and the legacy of cyclic abuse, and i talk about that, too.
i am a prison abolitionist and support reforming our criminal justice system from retribution-based to rehabilitation-based. i believe most people can be rehabilitated, and acknowledge the criminal justice system as legalized slavery which disproportionately impacts black and brown people in poverty.
a few more rent-lowering gunshots:
trans siblings are always welcome here 🏳️⚧️
all members of the 2slgbtq+ are supported and welcome here, including nb, gnc, and aspec. exclusionists need not apply. none of us are free until all of us are free.
bodily autonomy is a non-negotiable human right for all people, which includes children, disabled adults, those who have uteruses, trans people, and racialized people. the usamerican medical system is distinctly unjust to these groups.
abortion should be legal, accessible, and free. the only requirement is you are pregnant and want to not be pregnant. i support catholics4choice.
i'm culturally catholic, a long-standing critic of the church (and officially an apostate). i will voice both support for positive actions by the church and strong criticism for past and continued wrongs. the latter will be much more frequent than the former.
nuanced AI views, but generally against LLMs as a consumer product, supportive of gen AI in biology and diagnostic research settings, critical of water and other ecological concerns wrt data centres. gen AI chatbots are a plague. gen AI cannot make art or be creative; these are human endeavours.
my stepdad was an evangelical and i have a lot of opinions about evangelical usamerican christianity, mostly critical. i talk about the role of churches in southeastern us communities, especially in terms of disaster response, as well as the role of churches in addiction treatment and charity work.
southern folks deserve respect for their cultures, histories, and humanity. i will talk at length about systemic inequality, literacy issues and the death of free public education, and rural society.
gender is a social construct and there is no inherent difference between men and women that is not socially mediated. raise all children the same.
okay don't bother sending hate i will just block u lol

EDMONTON, CANADA - MARCH 17: Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks stands for the singing of the national anthem prior to the game against the Edmonton Oilers.
One of the most famous portraits of Winston Churchill is missing from the Château Laurier's Reading Lounge after apparently being replaced w
now for something pretty funny: the famous Winston Churchill photo taken by Yousuf Karsh, hanging in the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, is missing. some highlights from this CBC article:
- the people who pulled off the heist planned this well, because they replaced the original with a copy
- they don't even know how long it's been missing. only that the original was definitely seen as recently as 2019 and from thereon it's a mystery
- the only reason it came to attention is because a staff member noticed the photo was hanging askew, and the frame didn't match those of other Karsh photos in the same lounge
they don't anticipate it being returned and tbh to pull this off I (very vaguely) believe the thieves sort of deserve it lmao.
Honestly my favorite part of this entire story is that the portrait was so incredibly iconic because the photographer just irritated the fuck out of Churchhill.
Came across this post in my backreading of my tumblr and decided to investigate: the portrait has been found! In Italy, in the collection of a private buyer who wished to remain anonymous but apparently didn't know it was stolen.
The thief/forger was also anonymized for what I'm sure are legal reasons surrounding him being innocent until proven guilty, but in May 2025 he was sentenced, so his name IS reported in his sentencing article.
Not sure what I think about him getting two years; I have a lot of private thoughts and feelings about both prison abolition and the genuine harm that art theft and forgery does to culture, but two years for stealing a portrait of Winston Churchill from a Canadian hotel does seem kinda much.
i know it's been said on here and said again but people do so desperately need to genuinely do intentional work to build distress tolerance and start figuring out how to recognize the differences between danger, discomfort, and when a situation that is merely uncomfortable is triggering an emotional flashback in your bodies because it resembles a past situation that actually was dangerous which makes it difficult to realize/believe that this moment is merely uncomfortable.
i spoke to an allistic person who said their autistic classmate had a meltdown in class, during which the autistic classmate collapsed to the floor in the middle of the room, screaming and crying. they said it was "terrifying" and they were arguing for the autistic student to be removed permanently from the program.
when i asked whether their autistic classmate's meltdown was dangerous or merely uncomfortable, they said, "i felt like i was in danger!"
yes you should, actually. that's life. upsetting things happen. no one should have to experience any discomfort. but we do. we get stung by bees and sunburns and headaches. we live in bodies in the world.
autistic people are human beings who have the right to exist in society, including during meltdowns. having one class of your entire semester interrupted by a singular meltdown is not anymore of an infringement upon your entitlement to education than having your class interrupted by a fire alarm or cancelled for a snow storm.
one of my peers once experienced a cardiac event 10 minutes into class. it was terrifying. it was desperately upsetting. i was contacted by the school and offered counseling afterward because i happened to be the one who managed the situation until paramedics arrived. no one should have to experience their classmate being hauled off in an ambulance, but it happens. everyone was worried about my classmate first and foremost, and then about me. no one blamed anyone, and certainly when my classmate happily recovered and returned to school, no one thought they should be removed from the program.
the difference being that people believe a disabled personal, especially with cognitive disabilities, in crisis are not experiencing something outside of our control, but instead that we doing something. that we are in fact making a choice to cause a scene, out of malice.
"they were arguing for the removal of the autistic student" multiple times in my life i've seen visibly symptomatic ID/DD people either be physically removed or removed from/bullied out of a chatroom
especially for the comfort of "well behaved" ID/DD people
the time when i was young and a girl came up to me and started playing with my hair so i started crying and all the abled adults went quiet and started acting like she was a bomb they had to defuse and eventually literally swept her up like she was a load of laundry and carried her out
i've seen 2 disabled people manhandled out of a room for "misbehaving", and been the one manhandled out myself too
there's a part in the ugly laws: disability in public by susan schweik about seizures which makes a point i want to add onto:
"consider this account, written by charles henderson in 1906, of what happens if a member of the public sees an epileptic seizure:
(quote:) in sociable intercourse the epileptic is an object of dread, and no one who has witnessed the person in a convulsion can quite escape from the haunting memory of the spectacle and entirely free his mind from terror or disgust. hence there cannot be that free, unconstrained, and natural converse which gives pleasure to society. (end quote)
[...]
this kind of thinking, to which the ugly laws have obvious links, often goes along with a certain kind of understanding of the public sphere. public space, in this model, is pedagogic space; what you allow in public is what children learn is allowed in public. if you allow unsightliness a foothold, the next generation will be even uglier. to display something publicly is to spread it."
the amount of times i've seen autistic people discourse about "when you meet someone who is more autistic than you", making justifications for their intolerance: "it's because you're afraid they'll get you in trouble, or get in trouble. your discomfort is a trauma response. it's not ableism". aspie supremacy. "it can't be autism it has to be something else". the equation of being unable to "overcome" autism (and disability in general) with deliberate, malicious carelessness, moral laziness, weaponized incompetence (or seeing "unmasked" disability as a deliberate anti-authoritarian performance of freedom), to justify discomfort or disgust or annoyance or a feeling of invalidation. to sever association. "they're not like me, i'm not with them, i choose to behave, so i'm good, and i think they choose not to behave, so they're bad"

specific hell of a femme lesbian in which why yes! I do like wearing makeup!! I will watch some makeup videos online!! Oh My God These Women Are In The Torment Nexus
clean girl makeup? it girl makeup? hot girl makeup? pilates princess makeup? mob wife makeup? rock star wife makeup? politician's wife makeup? HOW ARE YOU NOT CHOKING ON THE MISOGYNY COMING OUT OF YOUR MOUTH
the constant infantilization and minimization of womanhood to fit some desired aesthetic which is really just a consumable way of being viewed through the lens of a society actively using misogyny to oppress women... it's exhausting.
I sound like a Barbie doll box circa 2010 but you should aspire to be more than merely someone's wife. take a moment. let's head back to 1960. you're a secretary. you hand your boss the wrong form and he calls you a silly little girl. his client laughs along with him. they are sharing a joke about how women barely have a place in the workforce because they belong in the home. you are nothing more than something pretty to look at. does that not fill you with rage? why the fuck are you doing this to yourself.
usually when you have a stomach bug your body is like yes sir we'll get this punk out of here, 48 hours tops. then you get a cold and your body is like I dunno ... between a few hours and eleven months ... maybe a week minimum .... you gotta understand we're short staffed
tbf to the body, stomach bugs are easier to flush out since they are already in The System That Flushes Things Out From The Body, and that includes BOTH ends.
with a cold you gotta wait for the macrophages in your blood to start Eating Everything, and they are. not big. it takes them a while. please be more considerate of your macrophages in the future, theyre doing their best
The story of Cats is that in the 1930s, the famous poet T.S. Eliot wrote a book of cutesy little cat-themed poems for his godchildren
And then 40 years later, Andrew Lloyd Webber found a lost cat poem that T.S. Eliot had cut from the cat book for being too sad for children, and ALW was like “woahhh. A cat….that’s sad. That’s deep, man. I wanna make a musical out of this”
So the producer assigned to the project was like “okay, I guess you could maybe read these cat poems as a satire of 1930s British society? We could probably do something sort of interesting with that, I’m thinking a cast of about 5 and–”
And ALW was like “no. Forget the satire. Also I want a cast of dozens and the most advanced special effects technology ever seen on stage. I’ve taken out a second mortgage on my house to fund this”
And the producer was like “wh– you– wh– do you even have. a plot”
So ALW got a bunch of actors and writers and artists together and they holed up and did cocaine workshopped for 5 weeks, and at the end of it they emerged and said “the plot is that a bunch of cats are having a dance contest for the right to take a ufo to cat heaven :)”
You know how the best genre of rock song is “There’s a Wizard”? CATS is good because it’s two and a half hours straight of “There’s a Cat”, which shares a lot of the same musical DNA.
Though curiously, the “There’s a Cat who is a Wizard” song is actually the worst one in the whole play. It’s not great on its own, but it’s REALLY not done any favors by the song right before it, “There’s a Cat Who Has Done Every Crime Ever And Everyone Is At Least A Little Horny For Him.”

Ok, so, bottom surgery recovery is going ~splendidly~ tbh, I’ve been off opioids basically all week, she’s healing well, she even looks pretty which at under the one-month mark is making me feel pretty optimistic. The only problems it’s giving me are that sometimes if I see something really gross it makes my body feel like it’s trying to suck itself inward from my vagina, like a black hole generated by the power of “ew ew ew,” and that healing is really tiring so I’m like…always sleepy. But tbh most of bottom surgery recovery has been peaceful, I’ve had a lot of time to do some self-reflection (which I hate, doing my own therapy as a patient suuuuuucks), BUT, I do have one funny story:
Right as I wake up there’s a nurse there who hustles over and says he’s glad he saw me wake up and tells me he’s giving me some pain meds and then he gives me IV Fentanyl and so I go from like “Ow ow ow ow awake awake awake” to “ooooooh fuck I’m floating on clouds made of rainbows” in like 6 seconds and so I was pretty out of it. The hospital had all the recently-post op patients all in one big-ass room, and they see patients for ALL sorts of surgeries, so I was next to an old guy who got his knee replaced on one side and some young 30-something dude with some kind of mechanism on his leg. So I asked him what happened since I was high as fuck and feeling kind as a result, and he said he broke his leg hiking off-trail when his leg went down a literal rabbit hole and snapped his shinbone. I say something like “damn dude that blowssssss” while giggling because I’m high as FUCK on actual fentanyl and he’s like “Yeah, for real, I’m feeling great right now though! What about you? What are you in here for?”
And I fully was not thinking like a person, I was thinking like a fentanyl-addled tgirl so I just go “Oh, haha, they cut my dick off!”
And he just kinda stops and is like “Hah-WAIT what? Why?” and I was trying to think of an acceptable answer to tell this cis guy because it’s dawning on me through my drug-induced haze that not everybody wants their penis gone and before I can think of a response two nurses just came up and…wheeled him away. Idk where to, and I don’t think he did either, because he kept looking back at me and frantically asking the nurses where they were taking him and I never gave him an adequate response so he probably thought he was gonna get that “Transgender for Everyone” shit before he was probably actually delivered to whoever his ride home was.
welcome to vagina-having! i regret to inform you that i have ALWAYS had the feeling like my vagina is trying to recoil further into my body when i see something gross, especially body horror and rot for me personally. yay!
seriously, congrats, wishing you the best in recovery!
