Audiobook discourse is fascinating but also deeply annoying because, when someone says “listening to audiobooks isn’t reading,” they could mean anything from “it’s literally a different act from reading words on a page” to “the narrator and their choices influence how you perceive the work so it’s a different experience from reading” to “I’m concerned that people will think audiobooks are an adequate substitute for books written in Braille or a similar system” to “I’m concerned that people will think audiobooks are an adequate substitute for helping children and adults who struggle with reading comprehension” to “I don’t like audiobooks because I assume they’re the province of the lazy” to “I just saw a BookTok influencer talk about how they Consume copious amounts of Dark Romance by listening to audiobooks at double speed and the audiobooks are always from Audible, never the library, and also they asked ChatGPT to give them a list of fast fashion items to buy with their gambling money instead of voting.” And if you argue with the last two groups of people that they’re engaging in baseless unexamined snobbery and/or overgeneralizing, people from the other groups simply will not consider that you’re not disagreeing with their interesting and valid but not, at this moment, terribly relevant points.

can we stop using “being unapologetically loud and taking up space” as the ultimate expression of joy and self-expression? i think the pendulum needs to swing back to maintaining mindful and moderate volume and being spatially considerate of others and being apologetic when necessary. no offense but i think everyone alive rn has the loudness and taking up space thing covered. if this breaks containment, i am sure everyone will be normal about the wording of this post and will have normal and good faith interpretations of it.

I saw a post that was complaining about three different ships that the OP didn’t like, and I’m still thinking about the OP’s choice to criticize all three pairings by saying that they had “no basis in canon” when:

Pairing #1 canonically had a fairly straightforward and unsexy antagonistic relationship that didn’t get a ton of narrative focus;

Pairing #2 had a significant, complex, and ultimately positive relationship that was canonically platonic (due to lack of attraction/having other love interests, not something more outré like a huge age gap); and

Pairing #3 had a significant canonical relationship with a climactic romantic kiss, but I guess they didn’t end up together because one of them died?

That’s just such a wide range!

Another point in the post—that the female characters in the ships (all m/f) were “easy to project onto”—was less remarkable, because I’ve heard people say that kind of thing a million times before. It’s de rigeur if you’re going to call a ship basic or a self-insert ship or whatever. But it did get me thinking about what that actually meant, because I don’t think the female characters in question are all that similar to each other. They’re all “good guys” and they’re all gifted in some way, but those are very broad traits. They all have magical abilities, but they exist in a fantasy setting so that’s also not very distinguishing (plus the settings all vary in how rare magical abilities are, so it’s a different situation for each of them). The main thing they have in common is that they’re the most significant female character in canon (or at least in the part of canon where they appear). Also, they exist in canons that have relatively few female characters compared to male characters, tend to place female characters in more minor roles, and are slower to introduce new female characters compared to new male ones.

I don’t think that these characters are “easy to project onto” because of their personalities or abilities or circumstances so much as they’re the female characters who have the most material for fans to work with. (It’s more revealing of a fandom’s biases or other tendencies, I think, when a fandom ignores the most significant female character.) I’m saying this as someone who’s written for both major and minor female characters; it’s fun writing for both, but those are two different experiences.

And, given that the OP went on to say that the fans of these ships write the female characters OOC for shipping purposes, I feel doubly sure that I’m right. The fans are doing the heavy lifting here, allegedly. Just like they did when I was in the Sweeney Todd fandom and most everyone projected onto Mrs. Lovett, a middle-aged Victorian woman who baked humans into pies.

#do I think this person was talking about a real thing?#sure. but I don’t think it’s universal/exclusive to three ships they don’t like.#do I think it matters?#sometimes. kind of. mainly in an academic sense.#i think the self-insert thing is a non-issue #i do think people often bring more rigid gender norms than are present in canon to their fic/art/meta #exaggerating size differences and sanding off the female character’s rough edges and making the male character in control more of the time #but that’s not dependent on the ship’a relationship to canon

literally….the idea that having your father’s last name is ~just as bad~ as having your husband’s last name has always been wacky as hell to me because regardless of where it came from, that’s the name I’ve been called since birth. it’s not any less “my” name than it is my brother’s name just because I’m female. I reject the idea that I don’t truly belong to my family of origin just because of my gender. If anything, that reinforces the idea of daughters as expendable possessions to be sold into marriage.

and it’s not that there’s no valid critique to be made of patronymic traditions, but it should be obvious why many women prefer to keep the identity they were born with instead of taking on their husband’s identity upon marriage. It’s almost like we have decades of life experiences, relationships, and self-conception tied to our names.

#lbr the people who say ‘who cares you’re just keeping your father’s name’#are invariably saying you should take your husband’s name instead #not advocating for taking a family name associated with the maternal side of your family #(‘that’s just your grandfather/great-grandfather’s last name!’)#or choosing an entirely new last name #also it drives me nuts when people take the sexism aspect completely out of the discussion #and treat the decision to keep/take a man’s last name as chiefly a way to punish or reward that man
