I finally got my hands on a copy of Paperback Crush by Gabrielle Moss, and I’m enjoying it so far but I don’t really think there’s as sharp a distinction between well-regarded socially aware vintage YA and pulpy genre-y/slice-of-life vintage YA as she’s setting up here.

I get what she’s doing, though (explaining why this isn’t a book about Judy Blume and S.E. Hinton and such).

Wow, she majorly got the publication date of Are You in the House Alone? wrong (1967 instead of 1976). Nine years is a pretty big difference in any case but also a lot happened in YA history in that interval.

Later she accurately describes the same novel so go figure.

The Fault in Our Stars (not part of the book’s purview, as it was published in the 2010s) catches a lot of frankly confusing strays. I honestly think a person reading this book would think the heroine of TFioS didn’t have cancer at all.

If memory serves, there were a lot of think pieces about YA “sick lit” being morbid or problematic or maudlin or whatever at the time Moss’s book was published. So it feels like Moss thought she should acknowledge the discourse, but there’s surprisingly little discussion of what’s actually wrong with any “bad” example (for the likes of Lurlene McDaniel or more contemporary books). And there’s even less discussion of what might be/have been appealing or valuable to their target audience. Which I wouldn’t expect but there’s a lot of ink spilled on why girls might’ve gotten something out of reading about ultra-privileged teens having ludicrous soap opera adventures.
