Audiobook discourse is fascinating but also deeply annoying because, when someone says âlistening to audiobooks isnât reading,â they could mean anything from âitâs literally a different act from reading words on a pageâ to âthe narrator and their choices influence how you perceive the work so itâs a different experience from readingâ to âIâm concerned that people will think audiobooks are an adequate substitute for books written in Braille or a similar systemâ to âIâm concerned that people will think audiobooks are an adequate substitute for helping children and adults who struggle with reading comprehensionâ to âI donât like audiobooks because I assume theyâre the province of the lazyâ to âI just saw a BookTok influencer talk about how they Consume copious amounts of Dark Romance by listening to audiobooks at double speed and the audiobooks are always from Audible, never the library, and also they asked ChatGPT to give them a list of fast fashion items to buy with their gambling money instead of voting.â And if you argue with the last two groups of people that theyâre engaging in baseless unexamined snobbery and/or overgeneralizing, people from the other groups simply will not consider that youâre not disagreeing with their interesting and valid but not, at this moment, terribly relevant points.
can we stop using âbeing unapologetically loud and taking up spaceâ as the ultimate expression of joy and self-expression? i think the pendulum needs to swing back to maintaining mindful and moderate volume and being spatially considerate of others and being apologetic when necessary. no offense but i think everyone alive rn has the loudness and taking up space thing covered. if this breaks containment, i am sure everyone will be normal about the wording of this post and will have normal and good faith interpretations of it.
I saw a post that was complaining about three different ships that the OP didnât like, and Iâm still thinking about the OPâs choice to criticize all three pairings by saying that they had âno basis in canonâ when:
Pairing #1 canonically had a fairly straightforward and unsexy antagonistic relationship that didnât get a ton of narrative focus;
Pairing #2 had a significant, complex, and ultimately positive relationship that was canonically platonic (due to lack of attraction/having other love interests, not something more outrĂŠ like a huge age gap); and
Pairing #3 had a significant canonical relationship with a climactic romantic kiss, but I guess they didnât end up together because one of them died?
Thatâs just such a wide range!
Another point in the postâthat the female characters in the ships (all m/f) were âeasy to project ontoââwas less remarkable, because Iâve heard people say that kind of thing a million times before. Itâs de rigeur if youâre going to call a ship basic or a self-insert ship or whatever. But it did get me thinking about what that actually meant, because I donât think the female characters in question are all that similar to each other. Theyâre all âgood guysâ and theyâre all gifted in some way, but those are very broad traits. They all have magical abilities, but they exist in a fantasy setting so thatâs also not very distinguishing (plus the settings all vary in how rare magical abilities are, so itâs a different situation for each of them). The main thing they have in common is that theyâre the most significant female character in canon (or at least in the part of canon where they appear). Also, they exist in canons that have relatively few female characters compared to male characters, tend to place female characters in more minor roles, and are slower to introduce new female characters compared to new male ones.
I donât think that these characters are âeasy to project ontoâ because of their personalities or abilities or circumstances so much as theyâre the female characters who have the most material for fans to work with. (Itâs more revealing of a fandomâs biases or other tendencies, I think, when a fandom ignores the most significant female character.) Iâm saying this as someone whoâs written for both major and minor female characters; itâs fun writing for both, but those are two different experiences.
And, given that the OP went on to say that the fans of these ships write the female characters OOC for shipping purposes, I feel doubly sure that Iâm right. The fans are doing the heavy lifting here, allegedly. Just like they did when I was in the Sweeney Todd fandom and most everyone projected onto Mrs. Lovett, a middle-aged Victorian woman who baked humans into pies.

Iâm reading a very pleasant low-stakes contemporary romance novel and the anxiety disorder of one of the heroes is stressing me the fuck out.
actually you'll find that the issue with my political enemies is that they're stupid and uneducated and illiterate and can't handle the real world and they failed english class and also shut-in losers who don't go outside and don't have friends and don't have sex and need to get some real problems and who nobody likes and also they're freaks and not normal and weirdos who need therapy or maybe to get shoved into a locker and to get some help i mean this in the nicest way possible and also hysterical bitches who look too much into things and think saying go outside is ableist and they're childish immature entitled babies having meltdowns asking for a later bedtime and also their family doesn't like them very much plus they're unemployed and don't do any physical labor so they have too much time to think about things and also they have brainrot and are brain damaged and also brainless i guess a lot of it is an issue with their brain i suppose plus they're gluttonous addicts who can't control their disgusting urges and whose will - sorry, attention span - is diseased and who are delusional and irrational and they're perverts who look strange and off-putting and they jack off to weird porn. so as you can see the evilness of their various ideologies is self evident

Whenever Iâm in a fandom, I always end up thinking about Nick Hornby sheepishly admitting his love of Rod Stewart to a friend and the friend sarcastically replying something like âah, thatâs a man who never lets you down.â
oh my god guys new ebook deals from chrĂŠtien de troyes??
Is Jennifer Garnerâs character in The Five-Star Weekend constantly drunk and/or recovering from oral surgery?
Lady in the front office talking about how her older brother told her that she was adopted and her biological mother was Sarah Palin.
literallyâŚ.the idea that having your fatherâs last name is ~just as bad~ as having your husbandâs last name has always been wacky as hell to me because regardless of where it came from, thatâs the name Iâve been called since birth. itâs not any less âmyâ name than it is my brotherâs name just because Iâm female. I reject the idea that I donât truly belong to my family of origin just because of my gender. If anything, that reinforces the idea of daughters as expendable possessions to be sold into marriage.
and itâs not that thereâs no valid critique to be made of patronymic traditions, but it should be obvious why many women prefer to keep the identity they were born with instead of taking on their husbandâs identity upon marriage. Itâs almost like we have decades of life experiences, relationships, and self-conception tied to our names.
