In late January of 2025, I joined a group of witches online to conduct a ritual for the protection and healing of our communities and for hope to sustain us though the weeks and months to come. Many wonderfully talented people contributed to this working, and I was honored to present an invocation of Brighid and to lead the portion of the ritual where we created the Web of Light.
With the permission of the rest of the circle from that evening, I want to share my portion of the ritual with all of you. (I'm not looking for notes or feedback - this was purpose-built and it exists as it was written.) The more strands in the web, the more lights in the dark, the more love and energy we can give this spell and others like it, the better.
If you feel comfortable doing so, I'd like to invite anyone who is willing to help to join in this working, either by yourself or with your circle. You can do the full blessing, invocation, and casting if you feel comfortable doing so, or just the casting alone. Feel free to invite any helpful spirits, ancestors, deities (especially fire-related), and so forth that you work with to lend their aid.
All you need for this spell is a quiet place to sit and a candle. (Live flame or LED, either is fine, and if you can't find either one, a flashlight will do.)
Perform whatever opening steps you usually do to begin a ritual (preparing the space, casting a circle, grounding and centering, etc) and when you're ready, begin.
WEB OF LIGHT
Suggested Music for the warmup:
"Brighid's Flame" and/or "Brighid" by Kellianna
"Imbolc" by Lisa Thiel
[BLESSING]
Into this sacred space, I call the light of creation, the light of inspiration, the light of healing, the light of the forge, the light of the hearthfire, the light of hope, which neither wanes nor falters, but burns bright and perpetual within and around us all. Bless those who are gathered here and may the spirits, deities, ancestors, and powers almighty that we invoke here strengthen our resolve, shield us from harm, and guide us in our workings, as we gather to do what is RIGHT, not what is easy.
[INVOCATION]
With the consent of those assembled, I invoke the name of Brighid and invite her presence in this place. Holy Lady of Cill Dara (pron. Kill Dahrah), protector of hearth and home, teacher, poet, healer, forgemaiden, flamekeeper, living link between the old ways and the new, be with us and lend us your aid.
Brigid of brightness, I bid thee welcome,
Brigid of blessing, come thou in.
Brigid of strength, I bid thee welcome,
This night and every night, this day and every day.
Brigid of the threshold, come thou in,
Brigid of the hearthfire, take your ease,
Brigid of the cook-pot, sup with us,
Brigid of all comforts, live in our hearts.
Ancestors all, I embody your legacy,
Ancestors all, I ask for your blessing,
Ancestors all, I offer Brigidās flame
To light the needfires of deep memory.
Brigid of the timeless flame, bless your [children]:
Those who keep the circle bright,
Those whose faith has never failed,
Those who keep your name ablaze.
Brigid, lend your righteous sword
To those who work for justice,
To those who speak the truth,
To those who seek a better world.
In the name of Brigid, who empowers the oppressed,
In the name of Brigid, who released the enslaved,
In the name of Brigid, who lifts up the downtrodden,
May all our people be honored and free.
[Casting]
Tonight, we come together with courage. Tonight, we come together with hope. Tonight, we come together in common purpose, to turn our combined strength to save what can be saved, to shield what can be shielded, to heal what can be healed, to burn away what must be cleansed, and to keep the darkness of despair and hatred at bay.
Tonight, each of us is a point of light. We are the tenders of the hearth. We are the bearers of the flame which lights the way. We are the workers at the forge. We are the spark before the fire, the dancing light upon the snow, the seekers of snowdrops, the keepers of the healerās tent, the knowers of the promise of spring.
For even as summer fades into fall, and fall into winter, so the cold and dark must one day yield to warmth and renewal. Even the longest night must end and we will see the sun rise again.
(Light your candle.)
Hold the light within you. Warm, bright, everlasting, a fire which burns bright but does not consume or diminish. This is a fire which shields the helpless, which offers illumination to the lost, which gives hope to those in sorrow. Each of us alone is but a candle, but together, we are a conflagration.Ā
Picture the array of us, spread out across the sleeping world, a scattering of earthbound stars twinkling in the night. Physically, we are apart, but in our hearts and in our magic, we are all a part of each other and of this world. We are the weavers and keepers of this spell, a web that spans mighty distances and connects us all. We are the beacons which will hold the darkness at bay.
Let the light of your magic spread out from you like the lines of a spiderās web, like the roots of a tree, like the paths of a river, like the crackle of lightning. Picture it spreading across the distances between us, each strand connecting one working to another, and another, and another, strengthening with each bond, growing until the space is covered. Each of us holds a line and weaves a portion of the web, and we are blessed to know that none of us walks alone.Ā
Like the roots of the trees, like the mycelium of the mushrooms, this web of light is not visible to all. Those that seek to harm, to disrupt, to oppress, and diminish, let them be blind, let them be powerless, let them find nothing. We give them NOTHING. But those who have need of us, those who need healing or shelter or knowledge or hope, we give them eyes to see. And those that see, let them light beacons of their own, until the night is bright as day and the sun comes up again.
(Extinguish your candle. If you ever feel that you need strength or hope or the time feels right to further empower the spell, light it up again.)

If I were young as once I was,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and dreams and death more distant then,
I wouldnāt split my soul in two,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and keep half in the world of men,
So half of me would stay at home,
and strive for Faërie in vain,
While all the while my soul would stroll
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā up narrow path, down crooked lane,
And there would meet a fairy lass
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and smile and bow with kisses three,
Sheād pluck wild eagles from the air
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and nail me to a lightning tree
And if my heart would run from her
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā or flee from her, be gone from her,
Sheād wrap it in a nest of stars
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and then sheād take it on with her
Until one day sheād tire of it,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā all bored with it and done with it.
Sheād leave it by a burning brook,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and off brown boys would run with it.
Theyād take it and have fun with it
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and stretch it long and cruel and thin,
Theyād slice it into four and then
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā theyād string with it a violin.
And every day and every night
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā theyād play upon my heart a song
So plaintive and so wild and strange
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā that all who heard it danced along
And sang and whirled and sank and trod
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā and skipped and slipped and reeled and rolled
Until, with eyes as bright as coals,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā theyād crumble into wheels of gold.
But I am young no longer now,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā for sixty years my heartās been gone
To play its dreadful music there,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā beyond the valley of the sun.
I watch with envious eyes and mind,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā the singleāsouled, who dare not feel
The wind that blows beyond the moon,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā who do not hear the Fairy Reel.
If you donāt hear the Fairy Reel,
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā they will not pause to steal your breath.
When I was young I was a fool. So wrap me
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā up in dreams and death.

It was none o'clock in the morning
When the dreamingās bright and gold
And the world of flesh was calling
But the air outside was cold.
So I wandered the rooms that are neither there nor here
Thatās where I saw them dance
I was young and wild and Iād never had to fear
Those who hide in the hidden lands.
And the stories said, Donāt follow where they lead
But the music was so good
And the stories said, if they offer, donāt you eat
Though they hadnāt brought no food.
And the flowery frocks they wore (for the dance)
Were so pretty as they swirled around
There were three or two or four (of them)
And I felt like Iād been found.
So I rushed on dreaming feet back my room
As the dream began to tire
And I found my own pretty flowery gown
Tangled in a belt of iron wire.
And the wizard says, itās just one of their tricks
But what if it was true?
Yes the wise wizard says, itās the oldest up their sleeve
But Iāll never know for sure.

My two-parter on Lucid Dreaming is out!
*actually kinda proud of this one*
Together, we are the Lorax. AndĀ we speak for the birth of a new world on May 15th.
This is one last info-dump for everyone participating on the May 15th mass spell which will utilize the astrological events:
The new moon in Taurus.
The planet Uranus (the revolutionary lightning bolt of change) enters the sign of Taurus (material reality, resources, and wealth) for the next seven years.
To plant the seeds of a new, more sustainable, and tangibly magical world.
For those of you out there who are still confused as to why May 15th is so important, Iām going to explain it to you via my perspective. Iām no master of astrology but I believe that on May 15th, during the new moon/Uranus enters Taurus event, we all have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to plant the seeds of a new world into the heart of the Earth and the mind of Source/The Universe. While Uranus moves into a new sign every seven years, I believe this particular movement is CRUCIAL to saving the planet/all life because this revolutionary planet is entering the sign of material reality. What does that mean? It means that we all have a chance, on May 15th, to completely restructure and change physical reality. We have a chance on May 15th to change the rules of our planet Earth simulation and give birth to a new kind of world.
Now Iām not going to tell you what kind of world to dream of. Iām not even going to say that you need to do my suggested ritual. Thatās not my place in your journey nor is it my place pretty much at all. Thatās for Source and that which is truly mysterious to decide the endgame. But what I am going to say is that on May 15th, we should put our energetic ballots in however weāre gonna do it, and plant the seeds of a new future for this world. Dream a new world up for Earth to beā¦because any physical structure built on this world was once a dream in the mind of a person/people.
But if youād like to hear my suggestion for May 15th, I propose we all remember we are a part of Source, and dream a new dream for this world.
Take five minutes even out of your schedule to sit down in a comfortable position, proclaim/remember that YOU ARE SOURCE/an expression of Source (which is called God or is many deities by many names), and that by virtue of this you have the power to change the entire world by simply envisioning it inside your mind or believing in the possibility of it on May 15th. Thereās no tools needed. No items. No regalia. Just you and your power to create reality with your imagination, your belief, and your magic.
Those who are driving this world to ruin are certainly doing the same every moment that we breathe!
Here are the times for the new moon. Keep in mind that Uranus enters Taurus a couple of hours after the new moon.
Los Angeles, May 15 at 4:47 am
New York, May 15 at 7:47 am
London, May 15 at 12:47 pm
Delhi, May 15 at 5:17 pm
Sydney, May 15 atĀ 9:47 pm
Some of you might have noticed that I did not suggest an exact time. This is because I want as many people to participate as possible. I believe that keeping the time semi-loose (within a 24 hour period of the event either the night before on the 14th through the evening of the 15th) will be more beneficial to this cause than having only a small band of people willing to do it because their mundane schedules allowed them. Some people have work. Some people have class. Some people are sick. Some people have obligations that I can not anticipate but I think everyone can take five minutes out of their day on the 15th to do one small meditation to themselves and with their own ideas of Source of magic.
Another observation about May 15th that seems relevant is that Uranus enters Taurus quickly after a new moon in Taurus. So in my mind, we will be planting seeds (our dreams for the future) in fertile soil and then harnessing/directing/utilizing that Uranian lightning to strike that fertile soil so our seeds can grow. The implication here is that once the lightning has struck the ground, we canāt wait around for the seeds to sprout. You can expect seeds to instantly yield fruit. These seeds weāve planted must be tended to. So tend to your energetic seeds in this metaphorical garden scenario after May 15th. Dare to live your seed dreams.
You wanna start a business? Do it.
You keep wanting to leave a relationship that makes you cry? Do it.
You want to explore who you really are and what you identify as without anyone else trying to control that? DO IT.
You believe in sustainable farming? Be the sustainable farming you want to see in the world and make it happen.
You have an invention youāve been putting off? Donāt put it off anymore.
You have a dream your parents donāt believe in? As long as it doesnāt hurt yourself or others, fuck them-just do it.
You want to just be able to smile or get out of bed? Please, just give one more day or week a chance after May 15th.
Because this May 15th stuff is only setting us up for Nov 7th, when Uranus will retrograde back into the sign it is presently: Aries. During that time, we will have to tend to our seeds again, and I will be doing another thing much like this one. And another one again once Uranus goes direct again in Taurus for the next seven years in 2019. You can imagine that all three rituals done during these Uranus movements are like notching the arrow of a bow, drawing it back, and firing it off. May 15th is special because we are manifesting the arrow, which in this example, is a metaphor for the new world we wanna manifest.
Some of you might be wondering how all of our wildly different visions for the world could all become true. I donāt think it matters much. Iād rather spin the wheel on any one of your dreams, Tumblr magicians and believers, than I would risk doing nothing at all. Or letting those fucking up this world decide. Besides, in my perception, all sorts of conflicting realities live right next to each other perfectly fine every day. However, and I may be naive in believing this, butā¦I think every dream for the future planted on that day fits into the grand design in ways that I cannot and will not claim to understand. And that all these wildly different visions are needed for the turbulence of whatās to come. Let the Universe decide the pattern of the weaving but letās provide the Universe with our threads to weave with.
And finally:
For those of you who were particularly interested in the knife idea and connecting the world tangibly with the worlds of magic once moreā¦May 15th is the perfect time to begin building a bridge. Please message me for more info about this if thatās your goal. Because ultimately, thatās my goal on May 15th.
In order to save Earthās future, I believe we must reconnect it to the worlds of magic once again, and bring about a new age of understanding reality. A revelation, you could say. I am just one of many standing amongst the magic community who believe this. I know there are more people out there who believe this in their truest hearts and Iām calling out now-Iām calling out to everyone of you who believes in that-to do something on May 15th to call that reconnection back into being! Iām calling you to act now! Believe now! Do whatever you can to dream that bridge into being on May 15th!
Anyways, there you go. Thatās my rant. Feel free to message me, pick my mind, fire off questions⦠Send them to my mailbox. Ask me on my blog. I will do my best to answer each one to the best of my abilities.
So before tonight ends and we all prepare to change the world, from one dreamer to another, letās give May 15th our best shot. No matter what the Cosmos grand design makes of our individual shots. Together, letās dare to believe, and dream in a new world.
An old and homely grandmother accidentally summons a demon. She mistakes him for her gothic-phase teenage grandson and takes care of him. The demon decides to stay at his new home.
It isnāt uncommon for this particular demon to be summonedāfrom exhausting Halloween party pranks in abandoned barns to more legitimate (more exhausting) ceremonies in forestsābut it has to admit, this is the first time itās been called forth from its realm into a claustrophobic living room bathed in the dull orange-pink glow of old glass lamps and a multitude of wide-eyed, creepy antique porcelain dolls that could give Chucky a run for his money with all of their silent, seething stares combined. Accompanying those oddities are tea cup and saucer sets on shelves atop frilly doilies crocheted with the utmost care, and cross-stitched, colorful āHome Sweet Homeās hung across the wood-paneled walls.
Itās a mistakeāa wrong number, per se. No witch itās ever known has lived in such an, ah, dated, home. Furthermore, no practitioner that ever summoned it has been absent, as if theyād up and ding-dong ditched it. No, it didnāt work that way. Not at all. Not if they want to survive the encounter.
It hears the clinking of movement in the room adjacentāthe kitchen, going by the pungent, bitter scent of cooled coffee and soggy, sweet sponge cakes, but more jarring is the smell of blood. It movesāfeels something slip beneath its clawed foot as it does, and sees a crocheted blanket of whites and greys and deep black yarn, wound intricately, perfectly, into a summoning circle. Its summoning circle. There is a small splash of bright scarlet and sharp, jagged bits of a broken curio scattered on top, as if someone had dropped it, attempted to pick it up the pieces and pricked their finger. It would explain the blood. And it would explain the demon being brought into this strange place.
As it connects these pieces in its mind, the inhabitant of the house rounds the corner and exits the kitchen, holding a damp, white dish towel close to her hand and fumbling with the beaded bifocals hanging from her neck by a crocheted lanyard before stopping dead in her tracks.
Now, to be fair, the demon wouldnāt ordinarily second guess being face-to-face with a hunchbacked crone with a beaked nose, beady eyes and a peculiar lack of teeth, or a spidery shawl and ankle-length black dress, but there is definitely something amiss here. Especially when the old biddy lets her spectacles fall slack on her bosom and erupts into a wide, toothy (toothless) grin, eyes squinting and crinkling from the sheer effort of it.
āTodd! Todd, dear, I didnāt know you were visiting this year! You didnāt call, you didnāt writeābut, oh, Iām so happy youāre here, dear! Would it have been too much to ask you to ring the doorbell? I almost had a heart attack. And donāt worry about the blood, hereāI had an accident. My favorite figure toppled off of the table and cleanup didnāt go as expected. But I seem to recall you are quite into the bloodshed and āedgyā stuff these days, so I donāt suppose you mind.ā She releases a hearty, kind laugh, but it isnāt mocking, itās sweet. Grandmotherly. The demon is by no means sentimental or maudlin, but the kindness, the familiarity, the genuine fondness, does pull a few dusty old nostalgic heartstrings. āImagine if it leaves a scar! Itād be a bit ābadass,ā as you teenagers say, wouldnāt it?ā
She is as blind as a bat without her glasses, it would appear, because the demon is by no means a āToddā or a human at all, though humanoid, shrouded in sleek, black skin and hard spikes and sharp claws. But the demon humors her, if only because it had been caught off guard.
The old woman smiles still, before turning on her heel and shuffling into the hallway with a stiff gait revealing a poor hip. āBe a dear and make some more coffee, would you please? Iāll be back in a jiffy.ā
Yes, this is most definitely a mistake. One for the record books, for certain. For late-night trips to bars and conversations with colleagues, while others discuss how many souls theyād swindled in exchange for peanuts, or how many first-borns theyād been pledged for things idiot humans could have gained without divine intervention. Ugh. Sometimes it all just became so pedantic that little detours like this were a blessingāhappy accidents, as the humans would say.
Thatās why the demon does as asked, and plods slowly into the kitchen, careful to duck low and avoid the top of the doorframe. Thatās why it gingerly takes the small glass pot and empties it of old, stale coffee and carefully, so carefully, takes a measuring scoop between its claws and fills the machine with fresh grounds. Itās as the hot water is percolating that the old woman returns, her index finger wrapped tight in a series of beige bandages.
āIām surprised youāre so tall, Todd! I havenāt seen you since you were at my hip! But your mother mails photos all the timeāyou do love wearing all black, donāt you?ā She takes a seat at the small round table in the corner and taps the glass lid of the cake plate with quaking, unsteady, aged hands. āI was starting to think youād never visit. Your father and I have had our disagreements, butā¦I am glad youāre here, dear. Would you like some cake?ā Before the demon has a chance to decline, she lifts the lid and cuts a generous slice from the near-complete circle that has scarcely been touched. It smells of citrus and cream and is, as assumed earlier, soggy, oversaturated with icing.
It was made for a special occasion, for guests, but it doesnāt seem this old woman receives much company in this musty, stagnant house that smells like an antique garage that hadnāt had its dust stirred in years.
Especially not from her absentee grandson, Todd.
The demon waits until the coffee pot is full, and takes two small mugs from the counter, filling them until steam is frothing over the rims. Then, and only then, does it accept the cake and sit, with some difficulty, in a small chair at the small table. It warbles out a polite āthank you,ā but it doesnāt suppose the woman understands. Manners are manners regardless.
āOh, dear, I can hardly understand. Your voice has gotten so deep, just like your grandfatherās was. That, and I do recall you have an affinity for that gravelly, screaming music. Did your voice get strained? Itās alright, dear, Iāll do the talking. You just rest up. The coffee will help soothe.ā
The demon merely nodsāsome communication can be understood without failāand drinks the coffee and eats the cake with a too-small fork. Itās ordinary, mushy, but delicious because of the intent behind it and the love that must have gone into its creation.
When she returns, the white, grey and black crocheted work with the summoning circle is bundled in her arms. Ā
āI found these designs in an occult book I borrowed from the library. I thought youād like them on a nice, warm blanket to fight off the winter chillāI hope you do like it.ā With gentle hands, she spreads the blanket over the demonās broad, spiky back like a shawl, smoothing it over craggy shoulders and patting its arms affectionately. āHappy birthday, Todd, dear.ā
Well, that settles it. Whoever, wherever, Todd is, heās clearly missing out. The demon will just have to be her grandson from now on.
Okay but she takes him to the little cafe and all of the people in her town are like āWhat is that thing, what the hell, Anette?ā and sheās like āDonāt you remember my grandson Todd?ā and the entire town just has to play along because no one will tell little old Nettie that her grandson is an actual demon because this is the happiest sheās been since her husband died.
Bonus: In season 4 she makes him run for mayor and he wins
I just want to watchĀ āToddā help her with groceries, and help her with cooking, and help her clean up the dust around the house and air it out, and fill it with spring flowers because Anette mentioned she loved hyacinth and daffodils.
Ā
Over the seasons her eyesight worsens, soĀ āToddā brings a hellhound into the house to act as her seeing eye dog, and people in town are kinda terrified of this massive black brute with fur that drips like thick oil, and a mouth that can open all the way back to its chest, butĀ āHoneyā likes her hard candies, and doesnāt get oil on the carpet, and whenĀ āToddā has to go back to Hell for errands, Honey will snuggle up to Anette and rest his giant head on her lap, and whuff at her pockets for butterscotch.Ā
Anette never givesĀ āToddā her soul, but she gives him her heart
In season six, Anette gets sick. She spends most of the season bedridden and it becomes obvious by about midway through the season that sheās not going to make it to the end of the season. Todd spends the season travelling back and forth between the human realm and his home plane, trying hard to find something, anything that will help Anette get better, to prolong her life. Heās tried getting her to sell him her soul, but sheās just laughed, told him that he shouldnāt talk like that.
With only a few episodes left in the season Anette passes away, Todd is by her side. When the reaper comes for her Todd asks about the fate of her soul. In a dispassionate voice the reaper informs Todd that Anette spent the last few years of her life cavorting with creatures of darkness, that there can be only one fate for her. Todd refuses to accept this and he fights the reaper, eventually injuring the creature and driving it off. Knowing that Anette cannot stay in the Human Realm, and refusing to allow her spirit to be taken by another reaper, so he takes her soul in his arms. Heās done this before, when mortals have sold themselves to him. This time the soul cradled against his chest does not snuggle and fight. This time the soul held tight against him reaches out, pats him on the cheek tells him he was a good boy, and so handsome, just like his grandfather.Ā
Todd takes Anette back to the demon realm, holding her tight against him as he travels across the bleak and forebidding landscape; such a sharp contrast to the rosy warmth of Anetteās home. Eventually, in a far corner of his home plane, Todd finds what he is looking for. It is a place where other demons do not tread; a large boulder cracked and broken, with a gap just barely large enough for Todd to fit through. This crack, of all things, gives him pause, but Anetteās soul makes a comment about needing to get home in time to feed Honey, and Todd forces himself to pass through it. He travels in darkness for a while, before he emerges into into a light so bright that itās blinding. His eyes adjust slowly, and he finds himself face to face with two creatures, each of them at least twice his size one of them has six wings and the head of a lion, one of them is an amorphous creature within several rings. The lion-headed one snarls at Todd, and demands that he turn back, that he has no business here.Ā
Todd looks down, holding Anetteās soul against his chest, he takes a deep breath, and speaks a single word,Ā āPlease.ā
The two larger beings are taken aback by this. They are too used to Toddās kind being belligerent, they consult with each other, they argue. The amorphous one seems to want to be lenient, the lion-headed one insists on being stricter. While theyāre arguing Todd sneaks by them and runs as fast as he can, deeper into the brightly lit expanse. The path on which he travels begins to slope upwards, and eventually becomes a staircase. It becomes evident that each step further up the stair is more and more difficult for Todd, that itās physically paining him to climb these stairs, but he keeps going.
They dedicate a full episode to this climb; interspersing the climb with scenes they werenāt able to show in previous seasons, Anette and Honey coming to visit Todd in the Mayorās office, Anette and Todd playing bingo together for the first time, Anette and Todd watching their stories together in the mid afternoon, Anette falling asleep in her chair and Todd gently carrying her to bed. Anette making Todd lemonade in the summer while heās up on the roof fixing that leak and cleaning out the rain gutters. Eventually Todd reaches the top, and all but collapses, he falls to a knee and for the first time his grip on Anetteās soul slips, and she falls away from him. Landing on the ground.
He reaches out for her, but someone gets there first. Another hand reaches out, and helps this elderly woman off the ground, helps her get to her feet. Anette gasps, itās Charles. The pair of them throw their arms around each other. Anette tells Charles that sheās missed him so much, and she has so much to tell him. Charles nods. Todd watches a soft smile on his face. A delicate hand touches Toddās shoulder, and pulls him easily to his feet. A figure; we never see exactly what it looks like, leans down, whispering in Toddās ear that heās done well, and that Anette will be well taken care of here. That she will spend an eternity with her loved ones. Todd looks back over to her, sheās surrounded by a sea of people. Todd nods, and smiles. The figure behind him tells him that while he has done good in bringing Anette here, this is not his place, and he must leave. Todd nods, he knew this would be the case.
Todd gets about six steps down the stairway before he is stopped by someone grabbing his shoulder again. He turns around, and Anette is standing behind him. She gives him a big hug and leads him back up the stairs, he should stay, she says. Get to know the family. Todd tries to tell her that he canāt stay, but she wonāt hear it. She leads him up into the crowd of people and begins introducing him to long dead relatives of hers, all of whom give him skeptical looks when she introduces him as her grandson.
The mysterious figure appears next to Todd again and tells him once more he must leave, Todd opens his mouth to answer but Anette cuts him off. Nonsense, she tells the figure. IF sheās gonna stay here forever her grandson will be welcome to visit her. She and the figure stare at each other for a moment. The figure eventually sighs and looks away, the figure asks Todd if sheās always like this. Todd just shrugs and smiles, allowing Anette to lead him through a pair of pearly gates, sheās already talking about how much cake theyāll need to feed all of these relatives.Ā
demon: youāre not blind here ā but youāre not surprised. whenā¦?

#look#you donāt go in a fairy ring and you donāt fuck with a stone in the middle of a field#these are just facts#nobody does it#fairies will fuck you up#Ireland#folklore#fairiesĀ (Via @false-dawn)
This is truer than true. Especially the Irish part.
Let me tell you what I know about this after living here for nearly thirty years.
This is a modern European country, the home of hot net startups, of Internet giants and (in some places, some very few places) the fastest broadband on Earth. People here live in this century, HARD.
Yet they get nervous about walking up that one hill close to their home after dark, because, you know⦠stuff happens there.
I know this because Peter and I live next to One Of Those Hills. There are people in our locality who wouldnāt go up our tiny country road on a dark night for love or money. What they make of us being so close to it for so long without harm coming to us, I have no idea. For all I know, itās ascribed to us being writers (i.e. sort of bards) or mad folk (also in some kind of positive relationship with the Dangerous Side: donāt forget that the root word of āsillyā, which used to be English for ācrazyā, is the Old English _saelig_, āholyāā¦) or otherwise somehow weirdly exempt.
And you know what? Iām never going to ask. Because one does not discuss such things. Lest people from outside get the wrong idea about us, about normal modern Irish people living in normal modern Ireland.
You hear about this in whispers, though, in the pub, late at night, when all the tourists have gone to bed or gone away and no one but the locals are around. That hill. That curve in the road. That cold feeling you get in that one place. There is a deep understanding that there is something here older than us, that doesnāt care about us particularly, that (when we obtrude on it) is as willing to kick us in the slats as to let us pass by unmolested.
So you greet the magpies, singly or otherwise. You let stones in the middle of fields be. You apologize to the hawthorn bush when youāre pruning it. If you see something peculiar that cannot be otherwise explained, you are polite to it and pass onward about your business without further comment. And you donāt go on about it afterwards. Because itās⦠unwise. Not that you personally know any examples of people whoāve screwed it up, of course. But you donāt meddle, and you learn when to look the other way, not to see, not to hear. Some things have just been here (for various values of āhereā and various values of ābeenā) a lot longer than you have, and will be here still after youāre gone. Thatās the way of it. When you hear the story about the idiots who for a prank chainsawed the centuries-old fairy tree a couple of counties over, you say ā if asked by a neighbor ā exactly what theyāre probably thinking: āPoor fuckers. Theyāre doomed.ā And if asked by anybody else you shake your head and say something anodyne about Kids These Days. (While thinking DOOMED all over again, because there are some particularly self-destructive ways to increase entropy.)
Meanwhile, in Iceland: the county council that carelessly knocked a known elf rock off a hillside when repairing a road has had to go dig the rock up from where it got buried during construction, because that road has had the most impossible damn stuff happen to it since that you ever heard of. Doubtless some nice person (maybe theyāll send out for the Priest of Thor or some such) will come along and do a little propitiatory sacrifice of some kind to the alfar, belatedly begging their pardon for the inconvenience.
