my income source is doing in home childcare for this one family. the mom lost her job about a month ago and, as such, hasn't needed me or been able to pay me.

i have several bills coming due and i am nearly out of food and i'm panicking.

Like for my current studies I’m learning about this guy back in 16th century France. His name is Marin Guerre and he’s from a pretty well to do family and they buck the trend and get marry him off when he’s 14 to a 12 year old from another family. I say this bucks the trend because honestly most people married in their 20’s but this was an arranged marriage so different rules.

Anyway like a decade later they finally get sexually active and have a kid and he promptly fucks off.

(Side note: I have to say kudos for him for waiting until they were both adults. We’re pretty sure by the way that they did wait because his wife Bertrande de Rols resisted a lot of pressure from her family to divorce him on grounds of impotence)

From what I can tell he then went off and joined some kind of army and basically lived it up. Its worth noting that his fucking off was apparently due to stealing from his own father and nothing to do with his wife and kid but it still wasn’t great for her.

Anyway 8 years later this guy shows up going “I am totally Martin! See I know all this super secret stuff about you. Also you’re remembering wrong and I was definitely always this build and my feet were always this small” and Martin’s sisters and his Uncle and his wife Bertrande were all “I’m convinced” and he spent the next THREE YEARS shacking up with Bertrande.

He fathered 2 kids with her.

He also sold some property and that’s apparently what made the Uncle change his mind about this being the real Martin.

So “Martin” is put on trial and Bertrande defends him the whole way and it looks like he’s about to be acquitted and confirmed as definitely being Martin but then the real Martin shows up minus a flesh leg and with a wooden leg all dramatic going “WHAT THE FUCK GUYS!?”

And Bertrande is also going “WHAT THE FUCK!?” And the imposter who is actually a dude called Arnaud du Tilh confessed some friends of Martin mistook him for Martin and he decided to roll with it and learn all he could of his lookalike and take his life.

Which, to be fair, it’s not like Martin was living that particular life.

Apparently one of the last things du Tilh did before he was executed was ask the real Martin to be nice to his wife because she totally thought they were the same person until the dramatic reveal.

All of which is fucking wild and it’s no surprise it’s been a subject of a number of books and at least one movie but holy fuck
