Caught Ollie scratching at my laundry basket so now he has his own
So far every time I set it in front of him now he's jumped straight in, no questions asked, and upon further investigation he seems to enjoy being carried in it from room to room
Ollie, Ollie He is laundry Sits in basket Round and fat Ollie, Ollie Great big ball-y Clean and cozy Kitty cat
Came across this art installation, Liza Lou's Kitchen, at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC. It's a kitchen made of tiny glass beads, that artist Liza Lou did, taking 5 yrs. to complete, from 1991 - 1996.
My favorite part is the sink.

Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find
Some people get existential dread from this
Me? I think it's fucking awesome it shows just how much of this world we have yet to discover and that is just fascinating
@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally
Source (non Aboriginal)
And a quote I picked out from a longer interview with an Aboriginal local elder about the area where he touched on the history
Source (the rest of the interview is really interesting and all transcribed, have a look if you're curious)
This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.

my mom won a ribbon in her quilt show 🥹🥹 I’m so proud of her <3
"you were always such a good kid! we never had to worry about you :)" thanks! you actually should've, though. like about this specifically
It drives me NUTS how often people say "Oh we were just waiting for you to tell us you're (some flavor of queer)!"
Like, did you let your kid know you would be okay with it hypothetically? Or were you just assuming your kid would not commit suicide or run away before getting the nerve to talk to you about it? Why would you leave your kid to suffer in silence and worry for years, because you were just waiting for them to feel comfortable telling you?
Because my mother said, when I finally told her at age 18 or so, that she'd known since I was very young. And??? The sheer amount of LUCK that kept me alive despite several suicide attempts??? Might have been avoided??? If she had ever just said to me as a kid that it would be okay if I was queer???? But she didn't want to have to talk about it, so she just never brought it up. (Also, maybe she was hoping I wouldn't be "that way.")
You cannot turn your kid queer by saying that it's okay to be queer. You CAN keep your child alive by telling them it's okay to be queer in case they already are and are thinking you will hate them for it.

Oh hey, it's Skype a Scientist again, here to fund science education projects with COOL ART.
Introducing SHRIMP CITY!
Look cool as hell in while talking about shrimp science with your friends.
For example: 🦐 Mantis Shrimp (who punch so fast they create pressure voids in the water that collapse to produce shockwaves, heat, and even a flash of light!) 🦐 Pistol Shrimp (Instead of a punch, pistol shrimp create their shockwaves using the snap of their claws!) 🦐 Hermit Crabs (who aren't "true" crabs, but Shrimp City is an inclusive town) 🦐Yeti Crabs (who live in Shrimp City's sister city, Hydrothermal Ventopolis, where they grow bacteria on their hairy arms that they lick off for a snack!) 🦐 Insects (who are not shrimps per se, but did you know recent research suggests that insects group with the crustaceans?? You may have heard that shrimps is bugs, but nay… bugs is shrimp).
These shirts were designed by Philly designer The 666 Cat!
What kind of science education are you funding by buying a shirt, you ask? Well, lots of stuff, but here's a recent example:
Here's a mural all about local biodiversity that we painted in collaboration with a Philly public elementary school with local artist NDA!
We got the kids from the school to help us paint it and everything! These projects are educational and cute as hell.
So hey. Get a shirt <3
UPDATE: as of Sunday morning, we've sold 271 shirts. To fully fund our fall mural series we need to sell 1100. Each mural costs about 330 shirts (this is a goofy way to fund good projects, but hey, that's life in the 2026 hellscape babbyyy).
This means we are 60 shirts away from our first Philly Bug mural being funded. So whaddya waiting for?? Get a shrimp shirt!
and if you are like me and white is not your color.... can I interest you in a plant native plants
or a biology is bigger than binaries?
This is true, it's all going to the same place
Update to the update: 12 more shirts to go to fund mural #1
782 to fund the whole project. But hey! That's major progress! Thank you to everyone who bought a shirt or reposted this. I'm a lucky dog to be able to do cool projects like this.
Just did inventory on all shirts!
Would love to clear out as many as we can because:
Squid shirts arrive next week (hell yeah)
The more shirts we sell, the more projects we can do to connect people with science

Okay normally I bitch and complain whenever tumblr does something to itself, but for once I actually appreciate it??? The menu is no longer at the top hidden by the search window where I only have a single line of pixels to try to click on it. Now it's along the lefthand side, and I can actually see them and click on them like a normal person.
I have yet to find out what they broke, however.
