I have only watched the HR show and I liked Hayden in that and thought he was a nice if humanly imperfect friend for Shane, but I've seen a lot of posts about how he and JJ suck in the books and are bad friends so now I have to hope the show adapts away from that bc I cannot with the trope of "all your supposed 'friends' are actually selfish traitors and your lover is the only person who gets you or cares about you" like it is bad enough that the series seems to be setting Shane and Ilya up so that the only way the relationship can succeed is if they both uproot themselves choose it over their careers and everything they currently have going on in their lives. I want love to be a part of their lives not something they get at the expense of everything else, to me that is not a happy ending.
I would like to say Hayden gives Shane a normal amount of shit about Ilya as men do. After that, it's just Ilya antagonising Hayden and him being like, seriously? Fuck him. One of the best moments in TLG is with Hayden's kids.
JJ ranks higher on the shit list for reasons but he does come around. Not enough to be forgiven imo. He takes issue with Shane's lack of trust in him and proceeds to not earn Shane's trust.
The main point people have is that barring Hayden, these men, his teammates, seem to forget who Shane is, Shane fucking Hollander, when they find out he's with Ilya. It's disrespectful to Shane and everything he's done until now. Particularly when they haven't known a version of him that wasn't with/in love with Ilya.
But the beauty of TLG is that Shane and Ilya build a life with their own friends. It isn't just the immediate circle of people that are around by virtue of work but people who genuinely care and support them.
anyway been writing omegaverse this week for the first time in uhh *checks notes* 11 years and have to say something i find interesting about it is that it's this like. frankly very normal fetish thing that's just breached containtment to a bizarre degree?
on 2 separate occasions i've had conversations with people where they've mentioned something they don't Get about omegaverse and I've been like 'well it's like that bcos it's a fetish thing' and they've been like 'it's a what??'
it gets treated as this like stock fandom AU and i'll see people like 'i don't understand why anyone wants to read this' and i'm like yes that's bcos it's pretty intense* fetish content & you don't have the right assortment of fetishes for it? there's a bunch of other similar Stock Settings that just haven't breached containment.
*intense as in like, Density of fetish content involved rather than intensity of fetish if that makes sense?
im alright with fetish ideas 'breaching containment' because then its less stigmatized but like its still fetish content and its a little perplexing how people could read omegaverse stuff and not realize its fetish content?
SO i think i've observed 2 separate but related things going on:
firstly the aforementioned demographic of people who have somehow genuinely failed to clock that it's a kink thing
but also a second demographic of people who seem to have taken its like. prominence in fandom spaces as a sign that they're somehow 'expected' to like it? i've not really seen this attitude with any other kink.
ppl will talk about it the way they might talk about say high school/college AUs or coffee shop AUs which are very common and i guess are sometimes presented as things that everyone finds fluffy & relatable? when in reality it's more like idk. piss kink. it'd be pretty weird to read a piss kink fic and go 'ewww why does the author expect me to find piss sexy??' well they don't. they expect people who already think piss is sexy to read the fic.
I think a lot of people have never realised that most (sexual) fantasy scenarios and fetishes aren't necessarily literal but set-dressing. They're shocked by Morning Glory Milking Farm because they can't imagine finding a minotaur attractive, but really that book is just about a size kink and like, having a hot older man spoil you a bit. Super basic, practically vanilla. Omegaverse isn't really about having a whole extra layer of gender and sex markers, it's more size kink and some kind of soul mate system and a smattering of cnc. When I taught a class on historical romance I really emphasised how important it is to try and look behind the set dressing and figure out why a trope or a kink might appeal to people and soooo many times it boils down to like, finally getting fucked right and not having to worry about student loans anymore.

This is like saying, "Here's a story that's like a thriller, but I FIXED it by having the serial killer go to therapy instead of trapping victims in his evil maze and dismembering them."

The thing a lot of people don't seem to get is that the entire appeal of a Regency romance is watching a deeply repressed, perfectly controlled, buttoned up, straight-laced person who has never expressed an emotion before fall so hard for someone that something in them just breaks and they come completely unhinged.
It's a very specific kink that this genre is tapping into.
People who think the characters in a Regency novel are boring are missing the whole point. The characters are supposed to be boring, right up until they fall so madly in love that it drives them insane, at which point they become very interesting. Regency romance novelists are doing the writing equivalent of putting plain white featureless uncooked whole eggs in a microwave and waiting for them to explode.

I am currently vibrating out of my skin waiting for the HEATED RIVALRY finale and the cottage and the only thing that has kept me in the general vicinity of sanity has been the absolutely god tier fic. I can't tell you how many times I've had to practically shove my face into my hoodie to try to muffle the cackling laughter because I was not going to explain what I was reading to the people around me, but all the lolz-worthy fic really did help take the edge off the desperate intensity of feelings I had after episode 5.
