You think about how perfect the location could be for low income housing, for squatting, for anything other than standing as a constant reminder of the city's failures to her people. The parking lot is empty, save for the occasional cop car, to ensure no one uses the lot or the building for anything at all. The cop ensures the space will stay as useless as himself.
They add letters to the theater's marquee; a reminder and encouragement of surveillance. "If you see something, say something. In progress call 911, over and done call 311." They board up the doors, ensuring that the space will stay in it's intended form: empty, useless, an eyesore that reminds everyone of their place. The freshly boarded up door has been emblazoned with a message from those who lack.

Estrogen's ability to increase fat metabolism and regulate the body's response to the hormone insulin can help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise. Furthermore, estrogen appears to have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes that might otherwise rupture from acute stress brought on by heat and exercise. Ruptured cells release enzymes called creatine kinases, which can damage tissues… Linda Lamont of the University of Rhode Island and her colleagues, as well as Michael Riddell of York University in Canada and his colleagues, found that females experienced less muscle breakdown than males after the same bouts of exercise. Tellingly, in a separate study, Mazen J. Hamadeh of York University and his colleagues found that males supplemented with estrogen suffered less muscle breakdown during cycling than those who didn't receive estrogen supplements.
The article also talks about sexual dimorphism in different species, concluding that "Modern humans have low sexual dimorphism compared with the other great apes," and that overemphasis on averages obscures the wide dispersal of individual traits, which is what I keep saying.
Anthropologists also look at damage on our ancestors' skeletons for clues to their behavior. Neandertals are the best-studied extinct members of the human family because we have a rich fossil record of their remains. Neandertal females and males do not differ in their trauma patterns, nor do they exhibit sex differences in pathology from repetitive actions. Their skeletons show the same patterns of wear and tear. This finding suggests that they were doing the same things, from ambush-hunting large game animals to processing hides for leather. Tiger found caged in abandoned home gets second chance at wildlife sanctuary: ‘He seems to be so happy’
The estimated 350-pound tiger was transported to the facility, an affiliate of the Humane Society of the United States, on Wednesday afternoon, and is settling in well, Almrud said. There, he will have the chance to roam in enclosures of up to three acres.
Almrud, who estimates him to be about 2 years old, described the moment he first walked onto the grass at the sanctuary as remarkable.
“It was just amazing to see him walk out on grass and to see him explore and have that freedom of movement,” she said. “It was just such a reward and fulfilling to us.”
Now, he spends his days rolling around the grass in glee, Almrud said.
“He comes right up to the fence every time a staff member is present,” she said. “He seems very amenable to our presence.”
The tiger is eating well – a combination of chicken, humanely raised non-processed beef and whole prey complete with organs and bones. It appears that he was being fed chicken, which is what owners of exotic cats often feed them, but chicken alone does not provide the complete nutrition they need to thrive, Almrud said.
In addition, caregivers are tasked with keeping the tiger mentally stimulated by creating “pretend hunting” games and rotating him through different areas so he has access to new smells and environments to explore.
“He seems to happy and content,” Almrud said. “Our staff is just falling in love with him.”

unironically i think we need to bring back computer labs because APPARENTLY some people WERENT taught basic computer literacy and internet safety in school

ok one last addition! if you want to take it one level higher, i think learning the very basics of at least one programming language is good for people. it makes computers less scary and it makes you feel very cool, and a lot of people get discouraged about it because it seems overly complicated and hard to learn outside a formal classroom setting, so heres some resources for learning the very basics of python (because i consider it the easiest language to learn and knowing one language will make it easier to learn others)
an online compiler so you dont need to download anything or worry about running code directly on your computer if that makes you nervous
a basic video guide to introduce you to python and walk you through beginner steps

The original percy jackson series is about cycles of abuse and neglect, right. Were introduced to percy as a kid who has clearly been left behind by a school system that has given up on him, restless and unengaged and self-defetist because hes been given nothing that works for him and no one even tries to meet him where he is. Then hes told no, listen, your neurodivergence is amazing and you just need to be given something that actually utilizes your unique palatte. And thats obviously the uplifting idea rick wanted for his kids, right. But once we get to know chb the same cycles are happening there too. There are kids "left behind" there too for one reason or another, because their parents dont want to claim them, because their parents werent important enough to get a cabin. Do you get it, all the kids who dont fit the most common neurotypes get shoved into the same closet. Kids are being left in a cruel world to fend for themselves without the tools they need. Theyre dying because no one bothered to accommodate them. Its such an obvious parallel that the first chapter introduces a teacher whos written to be especially hard on percys disability and she turns out to literally be one of these monsters trying to kill him. Meanwhile sally jackson tells him she named him after Perseus because she wanted a redemption for a hero whos story ended in tragedy. Meanwhile every book in the series replicates a greek myth step for step until the moment they break the cycle. Annabeth, playing Odysseus, is talked down from her hubris and grounded by her friends. Percy, playing Heracles, meets someone wronged by the original Heracles and rights his wrongs by refusing to go down the same selfish path as him. Monsters are reborn because they are--as the books explicitly call them--achetypes. These kids are stuck inside the cyclical nature of mythology because thats what happens to mythology, it gets retold over and over again. But these are the kids who have to live it. The series ends with percy being offered immortality and he rejects it because he wants to use his godly favor to force them to break their cycle of neglecting their kids. The series ends with a declaration that we cant keep letting this happen. The very first book offees the same choice. It ends with percy refusing to keep the head of medusa as a spoil of war, refusing his heroic reward. He lets his mother have the head and use it to kill gabe. Isnt that fucking crazy for a kids book? Gabe wasnt a Monster. He wasnt going to Turn to Dust and Disappear in a narratively convenient way. He was a living breathing mortal dude and percy and his mom killed him without remorse. Break the cycle of abuse!!!! Dont let this happen again!!! Anyway thats why the original percy jackson series is Hey where are you going with our breadsticks
Point of order: Percy was named after Perseus because he was one of vanishingly few Greek heroes who actually had a happy and triumphant ending instead of ending in tragedy. Though it still works with the idea of breaking these cycles because, if you read the Suda, decades later as a very old man, Perseus died when he tried to use the head to win a battle and accidentally looked at the head himself due to his failing eyesight. So Percy giving the head to his mother to use once and then presumably dispose of is still him proving himself a better man than his namesake.

As someone who keeps up to date with technology and enjoys experimenting with new tools, I played around with genAI a few times when the tech was rougher, before models like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion existed. You can see my experiments here: [link]. Honestly, I enjoyed the tech more when it was lightweight, undertrained, and often produced swirls of colour that only superficially resembled real things. The dream-like 'flaws' were a big part of the appeal to me.
It seems like every artist these days has a little rant about generative AI ready to go at a moment's notice. This is probably as good a time as any to share mine. I'm not even going to touch on the issues of power consumption, misinformation, plagiarism, scamming, or the devaluation of art as a whole, each of which is a complicated subject on its own. I just want to talk about the quality of AI 'art' itself.
I think any image rendered by a modern LLM is going to be inherently soulless. Diffusion models like Midjourney are essentially hyper-efficient design-by-committee machines, filtering the work of millions of artists through the work of dozens of programmers to select the most statistically likely arrangements of pixels for any given prompt. Technology enabling an unprecedented number of cooks to be crammed into one kitchen. There is very little room for individual personality in this system.
Even if you accept the framing that AI-generated pictures are art, the prompter is not the artist. The LLM is the artist and the prompter is the art director. And as artists, LLMs are technically skillful in many ways but also very boring. Their style is the absence of style. Details are generated not based on any kind of artistic intent, but solely on a statistical interpretation of the random noise used to seed the model. A picture may generally be worth a thousand words, but it shouldn't be surprising that a computer can only translate a 20-word prompt into 20 words worth of imagery.
Some artists who use AI may argue that it can still be a valuable tool within a more complicated workflow. I recognise that it is possible for a person to handcraft most of a picture themselves with only light AI assistance, but I'm still sceptical of its artistic value in those situations. When using AI to generate a base image to work off of, the colours and composition will be technically competent but also deeply unoriginal. When using it to fill in details, those details are going to be meaningless. An artist who uses AI to colour in their line art is effectively burying their work under a glorified Instagram filter. In every case, it is taking an opportunity for artistic expression and replacing it with filler that is derivative by design and only distracts from the human elements of the work.
Proponents of AI art tend to neglect the amount of depth that can be read into any given piece of human art, regardless of the artist's skill level. Every artist's style is a unique product of their own development. You can judge their priorities from the layering of strokes and distribution of detail. You can infer their knowledge and opinions by the way they've depicted their subjects. You can guess at their cultural influences from their use of colours, composition, patterns, and iconography. AI glazes over all of these things.
There seem to be a lot of fledgling artists who turned to AI when they became disillusioned by the development of their own skills and I want them all to know that, in every case I've seen so far, I sincerely liked their work better before they made the switch. Your ideas were always more interesting and valuable than the computer's. Maybe they don't come out looking exactly the way you want them to (I can certainly sympathize with that), but I would always rather see them in their raw form than one where the humanity has been buffed out by a machine.
