Thereās only a million of these out there, but none that I have found were consolidated into one post, were too vague, were overly complex, etc., etc., etc. Iāve made my own post of colors of import.
Iāve probably missed stuff. Send me an ask if I have, or if something is horribly wrong. If something doesnāt match what you have in your head or MSPARP or anything, let me know! I want this to be as accurate and updated as possible. Hopefully someone finds this helpful. ^^

fanfic speedrun: write the scene you want to write and skip the rest of the fic
(same goes on the reader side of things)
Iām seeing people on this post who think that what Iām saying is, āWrite out of order, starting with the things you enjoy most.ā And while thatās fine advice, itās not actually what I said.
What I said was, āOnly write the thing thatās fun, and donāt write the rest.ā
Write one shots. Write drabbles. Write ficlets. If you have 5 interesting scenes but you canāt figure out how to tie them together into a fic, then write 5 separate ficlets, post them in a series, and when you get another idea for that series just plop it right in there and rearrange the works into the right order.
You donāt have to write longfic to write fanfic.
I love one shots. One shots are awesome. One shots donāt fuck around. One shots are a hit of pure, distilled fandom straight into the veins. They know what theyāre here to accomplish and by God they accomplish it with as little extraneous bullshit as possible. Sometimes you donāt want a 30 chapter slow-burn epic five course meal; it too much. Sometimes you just want to down a double-expresso one shot of your favorite character and ride that high for the rest of the afternoon.
If you have 5 interesting scenes but you canāt figure out how to tie them together into a fic
I would like to reintroduce you to ye olde fanfic classicĀ āFive times [whatever]ā with bonus variantĀ āFive Times [whatever] and One Time [whatever adjacent]ā

Disneyās Pencil Test forĀ Frozen (2013)
I donāt think Disney is aware that their movies look so much better in two dimensions
That comment reminds me of another comment for which I canāt recall the source; paraphrased, āThe best CGI now will always look outdated ten years from now, but awesome drawings will always look like awesome drawings.āĀ
Also it wasā¦not the best CGI
The thing I hate most about Disney not doing 2D anymore is that the box office disappointment of Winnie the Pooh (2011) (which is adorable and hilarious btw if youāve never seen it) is often pointed to as the final nail in the coffin
Yāall released a 1 hr and 9 minute cutesy collection of Pooh Bear short stories about trying to find Eeyoreās lost tail on the SAME DAY AS THE FINAL HARRY POTTER FILM, of course it didnāt do well
AND yāall went up against YOURSELVES because Cars 2 had just opened like three weeks before and was very much still in theaters
It was not the animation, it was never the animation
I think this was an issue for The Princess and the Frog too. Not only did it come out the same month as the 2nd Chipmunk movie (which is trash but it made double what TPATF did).
You remember what came out literally one week after it?
Avatar. It went up against what was the highest grossing film of all time (until Endgame). They played themselves.
Donāt forget how Disney released one of their last 2D animated films of the era Treasure Planet on the same day as the first Harry Potter film and refused to delay the release even though they knew they would have made more money. They purposefully sabotaged their 2D animated films.
Iāve been re-watching all those Disney renaissance films, cause kids and Disney+ (donāt @ me, itās easier than piracy), and yeah, the animation really holds up. Not so much with the 3D films (looking at you, Toy Story).
Yes, the 3D films are technologically amazing. But itāll never hold a CANDLE to the blood, sweat, and tears people put into 2D animation. And as stated above: In ten years, that technologically amazing animation will look dated.
And if you think 2D animation canāt look as good as 3D animation, there are 2D animated TV SHOWS that are on a lower budget than 3D animated movies that look fucking STUNNING. Let me list a few.Ā
Even if the story isnāt the best, Steven Universeās animation is really beautiful and has such a nice style to it. The gems, the weapons, all of it just looks gorgeous. And have you SEEN the Other Friends animation?
Gravity Fallsās episode āNot What He Seemsā aired five years ago, but it looks like it could have been animated today. The animation is absolutely stunning in every way. The lighting, the colors, everything. Itās just beautiful.
And have you SEEN The Owl Houseās fight scenes? Those are entirely animated in 2D, but theyāre so smooth and gorgeous! They look ten times better than the fight scenes in a lot of 3D animated movies!
And donāt get me STARTED on the Tangled The Series animation. Itās done entirely lineless, which is not easy, and it looks so good that there could be an actual camera recording it in real-time. I canāt describe how amazing it is in words.
These shows are going to be looked at in ten years and still marveled at for their absolutely beautiful animation. Meanwhile, 3D animated movies that look amazing now will be seen as looking horribly, horribly dated.
Since the first draft of my reply disappeared (thanks tumblr mobile) Iām going to try and summarize what I was saying before:
Basically, I think itās a bit unfair to try and completely disregard 3D animation as a tool and medium. I ABSOLUTELY agree that 2D animation deserves recognition and itās deliberate exclusion in mainstream movies by Disney is a MASSIVE disappointment and is REALLY shitty. AND I agree that 2D animation has a MUCH easier time holding up than 3D animation.
HOWEVER, when 3D animation works to its strengths, there are plenty of examples of 3D graphics that do still hold up.
In video games, for example: Super Mario Galaxy released in 2007, but still holds up, as does Jet Set Radio and Catherine (though still a little rough around the edges). There are also plenty of YouTube videos and articles you can find that give other examples as well
For movies, I can see films like Spiderverse, Trolls, and Captain Underpants having a good chance at holding up in the future. They focus more on creating a unique visual style that fits their movie and are very stylized!
And even older 3D movies like Shrek and some of the Barbie movies look pretty good still, despite being almost or over a decade old at this point
Additionallyāthereās recent examples of 3D and 2D animation being used TOGETHER for absolutely fantastic results, like in Land of the Lustrous or Promare
The main issue with 3D animated movies (+ video games) now is that plenty of companies care more about making a product that will work IN THE MOMENT, instead of trying to create something that will last. So hyper-realism, new technological marvels, and established tropes (like Disneyās sameface in its 3D movies) will be used in a shallow and easy to consume manner. Itās about the spectacle, instead of using these things as tools, carefully and sparingly.
Itās the same issue with CGI in many modern movies all but replacing practical effects. Plenty of these movies age like milk because theyāre trying so hard to look realistic, but their CGI is basically left to do all of the work itself, which isnāt what it can really do. It should be used in tandem with other effects or stylized to mask the uncanniness (leaning into how not real it is instead of trying to trick the brain into thinking it is)
Jurassic Park is a well-used example of this. The film used a thoughtful combination of practical effects and CGI, working to the strengths of both to create a stronger whole.
BasicallyāI think itās a little unfair to try and pit 2D and 3D animators against one another. Both mediums require a TON of effort and skill for the animators! One is not inherently better than the other; theyāre just tools with different strengths and uses. Both mediums deserve to exist and to be used properly!
^ Iām a hardcore 2d supremacist, but the problem with 3D isnāt 3D. Itās the industry (well, mainly Disney) stubbornly, bitchily refusing to be artistically adventurous

i fukcing hate this show
This is the best scene in the entirety of IZ imo itās literally perfect
according to the staff commentary for this episode, the script actually called for heavy traffic to be rushing past Dib and Zim in this scene, which is why theyāre shouting at each other, and you can even still sort of hear the sound effects but then, for whatever reason, in the finished episode they just forgot the cars
@arr-jim-lad Iām CRYING is that actually a thing that happened, I canāt believe Iāve never heard this
YES
I REMEMBER WATCHING THIS AS A LITTLE KID AND THINKING IT WAS SO FUCKING FUNNY, ME AND MY BROTHER WERE DYING.
Another for the lost in translation category.
The original request from the writing team to the animation team was simply: āRhys flips offĀ theĀ monitorsĀ as he runs by.ā The intent was to haveĀ RhysĀ simply turnĀ offĀ theĀ monitorsĀ in an act of defiance, but instead, the animation team interpreted it to mean thatĀ RhysĀ performs a crude gesture.
Apparently, creative director Nick Herman found the mistake to be too hilarious to not use, and so they wound up shipping it.

Okay but for anyone who legit wants to know how to calculate it correctly:
The elbow joint on average rests a couple inches higher than the navel, so if you measure how long the distance is from the middle of the shoulder to that point then you have the length of the upper and fore arms!
So if anyoneās wondering about legs too, the simplest rule of thumb is that the length from the top of the leg to the knee is equal to the distance between the top of the leg and the bottom of the pectorals:
And I wanna stress that when i sayĀ ātop of the legā iām not talking about the crotch (please donāt flag me tumblr itās an anatomical term) iām talking about the point where the femur connects to the pelvis, which is higher up on the hips:
Itās easier to see what Iām talking about in this photo of a man squatting:Ā
So yeah if you use that measurement when using this technique you should get fairly realistically proportioned legs:
But remember! messing with proportions is an important and fun part of character design! Know the rules first so you can then break them however you please!
HOW THE HELL DID I FIND THIS POST OMG

BLACK SAILS - TITLE SEQUENCE
When I was younger, I wish someone had told me straight-up that not all adults experience āa callingā. That many of them never find particular purpose in a career. That sometimes, their job is just what pays the bills and they have to seek satisfaction and fulfillment elsewhere.Ā
Because as an adult, this pervasive notion that there exists a perfect path for everyone, that people shouldĀ love what they do, and that work is meant to function as a vehicle for fulfilling a personās grand life destiny is not only inaccurate for many of us, it can be toxic.
The ideal is so ingrained that I have to remind myself constantly Iām not a failure because I donāt adore my job, and because Iām not rocking the world with my work. That isĀ okay.Ā
Sometimes, work is just work. There isnāt always a perfect career path, magically waiting to be discovered. There might not be this THING you were born to do. Sometimes, you discover that what you really want to be when you grow up is āpaidā.
and something else: your career doesnāt have to be your calling. you can do what you love (writing, music, drawing, knitting) as a hobby. it doesnāt have to pay the bills. itās okay to do an office job and then go home to your hobby. there are different paths to passion.
