ive never understood the fandom phenomenon where someone will say they are a big fan of a tv show (etc.) but they hate the protagonist and wish the story focused on a side character they like better. it seems completely counterintuitive to me to hate the main character of a story? a story that you claim to love? it seems to misunderstand the role characters play in a narrative and the protagonist is the vehicle in which you experience the story, so it always comes across as just liking a story you made up in your head more than what is actually being presented. and often times if the story was about the side character you would get a worse version of the story!

#well i do think there is a difference between wanting to focus on a side character and like #wishing the story was about the main character's best friend who is a woman and hwo is infinitely more interesting than basic mc-boring man #with a side of what prev said about xenoblade chronicles 2 #which is functionally just. that.#however this got me thinking about the difference between tv and video games where like #NARRATIVELY it makes no goddamn sense for the story to focus rex instead of nia #especially since nia has connections to the main antagonist group AND a fun parallel with pyra/mythra.#while rex is just. uh. here. no growth no drive and barely any compelling connections between him and other characters #but also. becaue a videogame is not SOLELY a narrative story #even though jrpgs are more narrative stories than most other video games #like. i can see some of hte gameplay hang-ups that might be negatively impacted by removing rex #seeing as nia is the healer of hte party #like this could be circumvented!#either you give the player a very compelling reason to swap between pyra for dps and dromarch for healing #seeing as Doing Combat With Pyra/Mythra's Abilities is kind of the whole point of the game #and i think the agme is mildly attempting to frame rex and nia as deuteragonists but like #with pyra and mythra ALSO RIGHT THERE rightfully in the deuteragonist spotlight it's like #so fucking muddy #anyway #anyone who wishes thing was about x character instead #should go write fanfic about x character #or go read fanfic about x character #i'm sure it exists in the world :)#stop complaining about thing you got narratively and go to fandom who has fixed it #or be the change you want to see in the world etc
