I think a Negative Kudos button is really pointless first off (ao3 is an archive not a social media site! we don't need upvotes/downvotes to drive some nonexistent algorithm) but also it feels cowardly. like, there already is a way to share your dislike of a fic with the author. it's called commenting 'your fic is bad and I didn't like it.' but then you might look like an ass, and people might say hey that's mean, and you might have to defend your position of unkindness + consider why you feel the need to be rude to a stranger on the internet writing for fun and for free. a quick, impersonal, site-sanctioned Mean Kudos is really just a weenie move

it's extremely funny reading historical accounts of Spontaneous Human Combustion because it follows the normal historical trend of other 1800s paranormal phenomena where it stopped happening as much right around the time cameras were invented and stopped happening entirely when everyone started carrying mini cameras in their pockets, but unlike most others of its ilk, it was effectively replaced by this mysterious phenomena where alocoholics would spill liqour on themselves and then fall asleep smoking a cigarette and turn into a fireball. nobody knows if these two things are related
There are several other reasons why all the supernatural happenings of the 1800s (spontaneous human combustion in particular) tapered off.
People stopped wallpapering their homes with stuff that exuded mild hallucinogenics.
People got a lot better about realizing black mold existed, black mold probably shouldn't exist in their house, and preventing black mold from existing in their house.
People stopped lighting their homes with gas flames, which meant they no longer had sprawling conduits of leaky gas tubing throughout every room of their house that tended to outgas even when not lit. (Which was pulling a double-hitter of both causing shit to randomly catch on fire -and- making everyone wildly hallucinate)
People stopped (and I am being very serious, this is just what people did) filling washing tubs full of gasoline and using the gasoline to scrub out persistent stains from their clothes they'd then put on and wear while smoking cigarettes by the giant open hearth that provided most of the heat of their parlor room.
(Between ghost photography, "Sherlock Holmes and The Case of the Dancing Faeries", and inadvertent double-exposures, I suspect it took a few years before cameras started reducing the amount of strange happenings instead of increasing them.)

itβs so special to me that so much of fan culture is textual analysis for the love of the game. like thank god there are people in my phone who are also thinking about this thing i love so much that they are writing transformative fiction as character studies and setting clips of the show to music with theme-relevant lyrics and writing long text posts analyzing every line of dialogue like!! yay!!!
It's so weird to me that blocking has turned into such a serious thing only reserved for if someone did something wrong. I witnessed some discourse a few months ago around some content creator blocking someone and it blew up. They were harassed for "blocking someone for no reason". And I was like ??? cause there was a reason. They simply didn't want to see the blocked person's posts.
Blocking does not have to be some big gesture. I block people for being assholes but I'm also willing to block someone for giving a dumb take about my fav character. I've blocked people because I was tired of seeing their posts in a tag I'm browsing. I've blocked people who had opinions I agreed with but they were an ass about it. I've blocked people simply because I didn't like their personality or the vibe they gave off.
It's not that deep. You don't have to save blocking for "bad" people. If it brings you peace then do it. I promise you that you'll enjoy your internet experience much more if you block instead of engaging with the thing that's upsetting you.

A child is punished for moving and making noise.
To avoid more punishment, the child sits still and is quiet. But they have to actively remind themself constantly to sit still and be quiet.
The teacher sees the child sitting still and being quiet. The teacher treats this as the baseline.
Since the child is putting a lot of effort into sitting still and being quiet, doing so distracts from paying attention to what the teacher is teaching. The child then is punished for not paying attention.
The child now knows that they'll be punished no matter what they do. And they can't explain why they struggle, because any attempt to explain is arguing.
