ASOIAF Essos Infographic: Myr
"Myr is considered to be among the most advanced of the Free Cities, and is famed for its arts and learning. Their main exports are finished goods, such as carpets and lace. The best glass and lenses, and telescopes called Myrish eyes, come from Myr, and lenscrafters from Myr are considered to be without equal in all the world." - A Wiki of Ice and Fire (https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Myr)

Hi đ. I wanted to ask you something, but, first, I have to say your drawings are gorgeous. I love so many of them I can't decide which one to talk about, but I think the ones inspired by the oldest civilizations like the Persian and the Chinese are my favorites because I love history.
My question might sound a bit silly, but I recently changed my major from a STEM course to fashion design and I'm a bit really lost about, well, everything as you can imagine đ . I'm really happy about the change, but I want to prepare myself for when it begins next semester and the most I've drawn in my life is a carbon chain and even that is a bit wonky and I wanted to ask you: how does someone learn to draw clothes? I know I'll have to study historical fashion in order to get the inspiration for the design itself, but I wanted to learn how to do, basically, what you do and I don't know where to begin. If you have any tips I'll be really grateful, I've tried reading a bit online but everything seems so advanced for someone whose last time drawing was, literally, as a child and I don't know where to begin.
Thanks for reading all this and I'm sorry for the super long ask. Again, I hope you know your art is gorgeous (your HoTD designs made me wish you worked for HBO and I want to sew an Alicent cosplay based on one of your designs someday, if it's okay). Have an awesome day and bye đŞť.
𼰠thank you, thatâs all very sweet! (And yes, I love it when people make cosplays based on my illustrations, go right ahead!)
Learning to draw or how to get back into drawing is all about observation and practice. It doesnât sound glamorous but art is a study as much as any other major and there are âbest practicesâ, tips & tricks, and time dedicated to learning that can level up a drawing skill. Not all of it will immediately sound relevant but I always recommend a wholistic approach to drawing because everyone forges their own style the way they create their handwriting, by doing it and figuring out what they like best. If you never try things or observe things you canât add it to your toolbox.
The first thing to train is your eyes. How does shadow work? How do reflections in a glass work? How does the shape of an object explain its mass? There is a reason most art classes start with drawing fruit, or a statue bust. A stationary object that you observe and attempt to replicate. I generally sketch a very light base shapes first for the composition and size-relativity of objects but art is an adventure and everyone has their own approach.
The second thing to train is your hand (and arm, donât hurt your wrist when possible). Straight lines, curves, swooshes, pointillism, shading, cross-hatching. Learning how to move your body to physically create on the page. What happens when you press hard? How softly can you make a mark? This will come in tandem with other skills as you practice, but you should dedicate some time to study different types of shading and hand motions on purpose by themselves.
Draw and observe what interests you after doing a few intensive studies. Take a sketchbook with you and draw things you see in the world. The internet makes it easy to choose anything to draw, but objects seen in person will be different from a lens and a screen projection. Do studies from art you admire, it doesnât have to be formal, but looking at a painting or ink drawings that capture your attention and replicating them will help your brain study their techniques, lines, form, etc in a way that builds your skill at the same time.
(Ellen, you say, I just want to draw pretty dresses, why are you tormenting me? -> why do kids make volcanoes or do multiplication tables? If you skip steps in the fundamentals youâll just have to stop and learn them later after youâve run into a problem.)
Your practice doesnât have to be strict or take hours upon hours, these can be quick & messy & something you never show people, but you should try them at least once.
If you want to draw people and clothes, and youâve attempted a handful of stationary objects for practice, figure drawing is the next step! Go to a live experience if you can (itâs very chill, many are budget friendly, everyone is there to learn & study so take it seriously & drink your respect the model juice. Draw what you see it doesnât matter if it âlooks badâ. Most will have warm ups, 5 minutes or less to practice mass & flow, 10 minute poses for a little more specific study & then one 30 minute poses for as much detail as desired.) there are also a lot of resources online & websites that will recreate the experience of a life-drawing session, you donât have to go in person, but itâs a great learning environment.
Anatomy books are great, drawing skeletons, muscles, there are lots of how to videos or artists teaching simplification & form. If you get the chance get a Loomis book or study his anatomy drawings online, they were literally text-book required at my art school & are wickedly impressive.
Drawing fabric is going to come from observing fabric. You can even use it as your still-life subjects. It might be used as a prop in a life-drawing class as well. Study how it folds, how it drapes, how it changes around a body. Draw the curtains, draw your friendâs shirt, draw your bed, whatever creates interesting shadows you should try, or at least observe as closely as you can. In doing so youâll learn how your brain knows things about a fabric without touching it: thick, thin, wool, silk, scratchy, soft, your brain has already observed those things, the trick is to learn is how to translate that onto a page.
The best way to improve is to try. Whatever subjects work best for you, however much time you have each day, even if you donât think your art is âgoodâ for years, doesnât matter. No one learns a skill in a day, no one masters that skill in a year. Itâs not going to be linear and itâs not going to be quick. The best way to keep going is to enjoy it. Enjoy the study of it. Enjoy the practice. Heck, sign up for an art class if you can, they will create lessons for beginners around these ideas and have a dedicated time & place to learn in.
There are so many roads to âdoing what I doâ, and itâs entirely possible your teachers or professors will have a totally different view on what is important to a costume designer. I havenât had that experience I canât guess what theyâll expect from their students. I have a more traditional art & illustration background, I went to university for Visual Communication (illustration + graphic design) and our whole first year we went through art fundamentals. Busts, shapes, portraits, figure drawing, landscapes, photographing our friends to draw them later⌠we didnât start digital mediums at all until 2nd year. Itâs possible your school will skip some of those steps in favour of sewing or making miniatures.
Anyway, all that to say fundamentals are important to drawing! If your goal is to learn to draw then you must try & fail & try again at drawing!
For proof of concept I found some of my old, old sketchbooks and practice work, figure drawing, landscapes, master-studies⌠those are all things Iâve done myself and used to improve my art skill.
Laugh at them all you like, they are embarrassing and not finished work at all. However, I wanted to include them because I worry new artists donât believe working artists when we say weâve been there and that the âboringâ art honestly increases skill level. (Keep in mind sketches like these are maybe 10% of my sketchbook, I was absolutely sketching anime characters and OCs the other 90. Draw the fun stuff too!)
Oops, somehow I missed adding a the portrait practice đ
As for me, I'm just not a fan of that media franchise (but don't let that discourage you, I'm sure many are). I'm here for your historical and less specific fantasy art (I've bought many of your books! Love them!)
But you should also do what interests and inspires you, as much as you are able to as a business owner.
BTW, you've gotten much better at drawing men! And I can tell you put so much careful thought and research into historically inspired series, it makes me happy <3
Very fair, it doesn't appeal to everyone. I was asked so often to do more ASOIAF stuff over the last few years it felt like everyone was just waiting for me to go back to it. ⎠(. â á´ â.) â Maybe I should do some polls to see what you guys started following for/what you want to see?
Thank you!! I really wanted to challenge myself by drawing men this time around. My colouring books are very unfairly weighted to women's fashion... it was time to do something about that lol.
Have you heard of The Faerie Path by Frewin Jones? Probably not, but I think maybe you should check it out sometime if youâre willing. It has beautifully described costumes that I know you would draw excellently.
I have not. I don't really have a lot of time or attention span to read these days. It's been rough, reading used to be my biggest hobby.

Hey! I love all your arts so much. Just had a question, in your Miss Bianca art from the Rescuers, will you ever do her outfit from the raining scene (she has a sort of headscarf and umbrella)?
Thank you!
Probably not! I would do more animated movie redesigns for special requests or for commissions but I don't think I'd go back and add more to a completed movie character unless I really wasn't happy with the art anymore.
My style has changed quite a bit, but these days I need to be thinking harder about themes that will make colouring books or help my business. I already have so many fashions from the 1900s that I need to branch out a little farther, mix it up a little more.

Up Next: Myr
For me, Myr was all about the lace, and for outfits that have extravagant amounts of lace my mind went straight to the Spanish mantilla. Inspired by the 1600s and the huge lace cuffs and collars, paired with a lace veil pinned up dramatically over the hair.
This was also good for me because I could link it visually pretty directly with Braavos. This way they would "post-renaissance" fashion buddies, but with lighter colours, a Lot more lace, and smaller hats and feathers.

Myrcella in Dorne
Myrcella adapts well to Dorne. Finally being able to relax and grow away from her mother and brother does wonders for her, who would have thought. Myrcella is described as being the Lan the Clever inheritor for her generation (the way Tyrion is for his) and the Martells help her cultivate her intellect and consider her to be the best inheritor to the Baratheon Throne.

The test print of the next fantasy fashion colouring book came in and it looks goooooood!!
Thereâs a few little updates to make but this one came together really quickly! (Which also means âAcross the Universeâ will be unpublished soon)
Hope you're excited about the fashion illustrations in this book! :D

Myrcella in King's Landing!
Somewhere between a Burgundian gown, a medieval tapestry and maybe a drizzle of Cranach gowns we have Crownlands fashion. She's still in reds and golds but the colors are softer, practically pink. Her hip-broach has a secret little stag head. I enjoy little details too much.
Now it should be easier to gauge where Sansa's outfit falls in the Crownlands fashion landscape. Hopefully the similarities in Sansa's, Myrcella's and Cersei's costumes help with that.

A pair from Pentos
(These two are unrelated, just near each other.) An older merchant man and a younger woman. I was thinking about wealthy merchant men and women who are favoured by them. A wife, a mistress. Those are the thoughts are in the direction I was thinking.
(If you see this without the other Pentos images know that this is a companion-post , not the whole picture. ;D)

also sorry same person as the last anon (i mentioned your historical and mermaid collections), i think even if you know youâd gone for like old valerian fashion or something that links to hotd you may have garnered more interest, itâs probably purely because people donât really know much about what your posts are about so i definitely think your posts for this theme will grown in interaction as the right audience finds them or even as your own follows start to take an interest in the source material and start learning and understanding - maybe try playing around with your tags etc to see?
There's nothing to do but experiment and see what happens now! XD
Thanks for your insights, <3
i think potentially a cause for the dip could be that this theme (i love it btw) is a departure from your âusualâ theming like historical, mermaids, things that are more widely known and probably have a farther reach. especially for people who may be interested in historical fashion, for example, but donât follow art or artists, you may be a bridge linking both of those things for someone, same with mermaids too (mermaids also have the benefit of mermay being a tumblr-wide phenomenon). and yes your asoiaf posts were also very popular, they were also more widely known houses/characters because of the show, so the tile essos posts though beautiful are still a lot more niche than your other theme explorations, i think theyâll pick up as time goes on đŠľ
That's very fair, it's still very early in the Essos series and with the feedback from the last few days I've made some adjustments. Both in my hopes for the series and in the posting schedule.
Instead of having them release back to back to back Tuesday through Thursday, I've swapped things around so it's Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Hey I understand that your having a bit of a crisis with your posts, sorry about that. I'm one of the lurkers that doesn't reblog enough. I appreciate seeing it! I'll try to be better! Also, my mom just got my daughter one of your coloring books for her birthday. We've been doing it together and really love it. Thank you for sharing your talent in so many ways!
No, I'm sorry to have brought you guys down. I've been oversharing and you guys visit me to have fun, not hear about my anxieties about running a business. I was being impatient about getting feedback, when I really should have tempered my expectations for a slower-start into interest for the new series. Lurkers are great and I appreciate every like, no reblogs are obligatory.
I'm so glad you and your daughter are enjoying the colouring book. It means so much to me that you are enjoying it. <3
Thanks for reaching out! <3

Moving on to the visiting Royal Ladies, Princess Myrcella!
(Yes I know I skipped the Stark men.... I just don't have as much to say about their outfits & have more fun drawing pretty dresses XD )
This is Myrcella arriving in Winterfell. I decided that Stormlord fashion leans towards houppelandes so here we have a houppelande-inspired fur-trimmed over-layer. And of course for Lannisters it's all about the golden curls and reds. (and a circlet)
Thinking about how the King's Landing party would react/dress for Winterfell's weather and temperature was really fun. How does a rich person dress for the cold? Extravagantly & probably not very efficiently. But this is fur-lined and voluminous so it probably is pretty cozy XD.
