I have no clue how one would include backstitching in a font, but it would look so good
This Art Deco set, from a pamphlet where it shares space with both the most stunning animal illustrations you've ever seen and also the world's most baffling, hideous borders
This one has a lowercase set, too. In a modern context this reads more as a retro game font than a cross-stitch one.
these would look INSANE stitched. more of a monogram font than one for sentences, but who cares. I could figure out some lowercases and this would absolutely COOK
Love the weight of this one. Gothic, fun, but not large enough to be unwieldy.

hot take but I think with a good lowercase set this one would also be good for a lot of things-- party in the capitals, but keep the lowercase legible.

This is going to be a bit of a meandering yarn (pun intended), but hear me out.
As someone who has taught people to crochet, and has had some great mentors and peers, I personally belief that the biggest barriers to people getting good at handcrafts (knitting, crochet, embroidery, etc.) are frustration tolerance and insecurity.
I've had some tantys with my yarn. I've thrown projects accross the room. I've sworn I would never pick up needles again. It's very normal to experience frustration as a crafter. There are enough memes out there that I feel like it's a prerequisite.
I've also had students tell me they are just bad at working with their hands, that they're clumsy, that they can't count (join the club), that something about them is uniquely flawed in such a way that they will never be good at crochet.
And what I've noticed, is that every single person I've met who feels that way is a complete beginner who hasn't given themself the chance.
So, consider the following,
Because handcrafts require persistence and muscle memory in order to become proficient, you will likely not experience the feeling of 'being good at it' for many years, and even then most people experience some amount of imposter syndrome. If you cannot handle the idea of not being good at something after a couple of tries, it might be worth investigating your relationship with instant gratification. Persisting with crochet is a fantastic way to start!
One does not become proficient by simply reading a pattern and completing an object. You become proficient from hundreds of hours of your body doing the same movements until they become second nature. The feeling of your body catching up to you is honestly amazing, and there have been several times during my crochet journey where I could actually feel my metaphorical skill bar go up a little bit.
The hand movements of crochet are very complex (there's a reason why machines can't reproduce them), which makes it hard to pick up. Especially if you've never done handcrafts before. So it's natural it would take most people a bit to get things like tension right.
If I had a dollar for every beginner who told me they're not good at tension...
So, everyone's tension sucks when they're beginners. That's not a secret, you're not uniquely afflicted, your tension sucks because you just started a new craft.
Exceptions including disability, of course. I have mild dyspraxia and I genuinely really struggle with tension in every craft I do. My hands don't work that way. I know people who can't crochet full stop cuz of their disabilities. Trust me, I get it. If you can't do it the way you're taught, find another way. Find something that helps. You're allowed.
Your tension will get better over time, but it will not get better at all if you give up because you're self conscious about being a beginner. You will not be able to read patterns if you tell yourself that you can't read patterns. You will always be stuck if you do not push past your discomfort and challenge yourself.
Please believe that pushing through the beginner anxiety is worth it. Changing your mindset about learning new skills is worth it. Persisting past the frustration is worth it.
A paper art rose, inspired by quilting patterns and triangles!
I’ve been wanting to quilt for ages, but don’t really know where to start. So I started thinking about what other mediums I could use to make these kinds of patterns I guess? Seeing as I have three very thick binders with thicker paper, with very few uses so far, I thought of piecing something like a flower together, ended up sketching it and making this within a couple days!
Had a lot of fun making it, and would definitely recommend! Also, if someone has any tips to start quilting, feel free to let me know!
Apologies to those who are waiting for the finished piece from this post. I had to put it aside for a moment to focus on creating gifts for my loved ones' birthdays that are coming up. So instead of the end result of the previous project, here is another work in progress - it's going to be a space-themed wall hanging! How are you choosing the phrases for your cross stitch?
I've been collecting them for a while in a text file. Jotting them down when I think of them. Mostly from my life, memories, scraps of conversations.
Then I weed out the duplication - or duplicated themes, the ones that are too obvious, or just don't fit. Some get weeded out and then put back, some get tweaked and tweaked again, ending up as something completely different. Until I'm happy enough to start charting them up as cross stitch elements (that happens on a graph pad. Actually let me take a photo of a page lol.)
I think I ended up with about 24 phrases - so another 7 or so to stitch.
I read etiquette and homemaking guides from the 1800s mostly because they're a FASCINATING insight into cultural norms that we often don't think about. I honestly really recommend people crack one of these open at least once--it goes way beyond, like, "what to wear to a ball!!!"
The best ones have advice on decor, how to select high-quality furniture, childrearing, fashion, etc--from a contemporary perspective, and the things the authors feel the need to clarify vs the wild shit that will just casually mention like it's something everyone knows and agrees on is REALLY revealing of the culture and how it's shifted.
And while a lot of the advice is WILDLY bigoted or just outright funny, you'd be surprised how much of it is...just genuinely timeless, and shockingly compassionate.
They ALSO, as a writer, have INVALUABLE resources--because, again, they're talking about things that are so MUNDANE that a lot of the time nobody really sat down to formally document what normal, everyday people thought or cared about--because that's boring! But a book written to provide advice and information to, say, a young woman who's never run her own home before? You can fully expect an entire chapter dedicated to The Types Of Oven, and which features are useful and worth spending money on, and which features are a huge hassle to clean and a waste of space, and what to spend that money on instead.
And like. As a writer who frequently works in the 1800s? Fuck inflation calculators, this is the kind of thing I need. This is absolutely priceless.
Now that being said.
My current favorite 'etiquette guide' in the world is actually like....70% purely practical advice, written by a gentleman the groupchat has affectionately dubbed History's Most Autistic Man In The World, and thank god they didn't have Aderall back then

Another cross stitch I finished earlier this year! Probably one of my favorites so far, I love the color combo and the pattern was really fun. A lot of this was stitched watching Olympic ice hockey! I did change the text to Diana instead of Diane, which was a purely personal preference.

especially with gift knitting I know it can be tempting to push through it for a deadline, but it’s really not worth causing long term injury. (And anyone knit-worthy should be understanding of that, imho.) Stay well :)
With the Namaste movement, because I climb as well, I like to rotate my hands away from my body, so the steepled fingers are pointing outwards, rotate as far as I can until I feel a gentle stretch down the insides of my forearms. Give it a try!

A finished bookmark from end of 2025! Made from the bookmark kit from DMC of the Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh. Incredibly fun to do, even though all the different yellows were incredibly difficult to work with sometimes, it taught me so much. Mainly counting. So. Much. Counting. But it was also an introduction to the amazing kits they make out of famous paintings. That resulted in me ordering the cross stitch kit for the Waterlilies from Monet, which has been a joy to work on! Definitely recommend.
Using this time to blog about the giant backlog of creative stuff I’ve been doing over the last year, oops. Mostly as an archive to myself, but also because I want to keep blogging about my creative stuff and I am not nearly doing it enough.
This was an illustration of a cozy cottage kitchen thing I had in my mind for months I did in January/February of 2026!
Still really proud of this one. I’ve really come to love the combination of watercolor and colored pencils. I just need to practice art again, which I keep being scared of for some reason. So, here’s to keep practicing the things I want to be better at, even if that means if I’m not always happy with the outcome. Because what if I do end up really loving it?
I’m sure many of you have been watching my process in my stories. It took over a month to figure out how I was going to pull this off because I haven’t painted much in a while, let alone on a surface like a skateboard deck. It was already hard enough to figure out the subject I was going to paint! I ended up wanting to go for a medieval y2k style considering the surface I was instructed to paint on. I had to make it harder for myself and sketch it out digitally so that the composition would look exact, but of course the projector warped the image on the edges of the deck. Luckily it was an easy fix. Honestly for my first time painting with acrylic gouache on a skateboard, I’d say it looks pretty decent?

Got completely obsessed over the last couple months with tapestry crochet! It’s been nice to be able to use my hands but also have to think about the amount of stitches. There are so many free vintage patterns that are mythological and kind of fantasy like, which is straight up my alley! Definitely will continue doing it during my summer holidays. I do still need to block all of them, but I’ll cross that road when I get to it.

So, didn’t post for like… six weeks. Life got really busy and my motivation for my assignments absolutely tanked. It was probably a combination of getting sick (haven’t beent this sick in YEARS), being overwhelmed and honestly? The state of the world. But, this is my comfy corner of the internet, so this is what I did do and what I am proud of the last few weeks.
I finished my Sunflowers cross stitch piece!! Still need to iron and finish it off, but this was such a fun kit to do. (I’ll post that later once I’ve got a good picture!)
Went on a week long holiday to Switzerland and got the most gorgeous view in Luzern
Made my november spread yesterday!
I didn’t read as much as I wanted to, but I did finish Glorious Rivals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, I flew through that book and it’s so ridiculous it’s just a fun read. Looking forward to the next one!
Took loads of walks. Autumn is my favourite season, and it’s been an absolute joy to see the colours on the trees change and kicking my boots in the crunchy leaves.
This week I am off, due to finished deadlines and my plans are reading loads, being crafty, cleaning my room and going to the library and bookstore. Have a lovely week and take care of yourselves✨
It’s been a few weeks into the new semester, and so far, it’s been good! Definitely some interesting subjects I am doing this semester, mostly research based. But that is something I really like, even if it gets hard and stresses me out half the time. It does mean my view is mostly my laptop. But blasting good music really helps!
I am taking lots of walks to keep myself sane. The weather has been cooling down a lot as well, so it’s finally looking like autumn! Cue the cups of tea, crunchy leaves and crisp morning air.
Steadily making progress on my cross stitch. Had to take out a portion because I miscounted. Oh well. It’s my first kit, and I’ve been really enjoying it!
Haven’t been reading tonnes lately, but that’s okay. I am reading at night, and my current book is Icon and Inferno by Marie Lu. I love her books, and this is no exception!
