Something that I get chills about is the fact that the oldest story told made by the oldest civilization opens with "In those days, in those distant days, in those ancient nights."
This confirms that there is a civilization older than the Sumerians that we have yet to find

@makaeru peer review cos this made me check when the Sumerians happened and I forget how recent history is for every other continent. 7000 - 8000 years ago just isn't that long when you're in Australia, and the amount of detailed history we have access to here is wonderful and should be recognised more internationally

This is part of my Ancient Civilizations class that I teach, which does a whole week about Australia and the Torres Strait Islands because I was sick of never seeing them represented in USAmerican history contexts. With the help of @micewithknives and @acearchaeologist I've learned so many incredible things about Australia's past and it's been incredibly rewarding to share them with students.
My favorite fact about Aboriginal oral history is the fact that we pretty recently discovered that the Aboriginal myth of the 7 Sisters, an origin story for the Pleiades star cluster, accurately reflects a point TEN THOUSAND YEARS AGO when two stars in the constellation got close enough together to no longer be distinguishable by the naked eye.
The story? 6 sisters running from something that took their 7th sister.

tbh since stackexchange/stackoverflow are essentially the first real result for any technical computer related question these days it's growing increasingly frustrating that questions asked on the wrong service are just closed and ignored instead of being moved to the correct service. they're the same website. it would not be hard.
few things annoy me more than when some creator I like goes through the trouble of writing a "guide to writing/drawing/producing X" and then you read it and the vast majority of it is just "don't give up!" "It's okay to make bad stuff first, that's how you learn!" instead of actual useful process advice.

like yeah doing bad is part of getting good but it's bc ur practicing. that means u need 2 know what 2 practice. u need methods 2 tryyyyyy. u need tips on when u should focus on learning a technique thru iteration, when it's a case of developing muscle memory, when it's more about how u perceive what ur doin....u need 2 know when u should spend time analysing ur latest attempts an how u develop the skills 2 notice what it is u need 2 improve.
there's a reason creative disciplines like drawing, writing, playing music etc. hav teachers. entire courses. many methods developed over centuries.
telling people not 2 give up, or 2 get over themselves is step -1. it's what u do b4 starting on a course. u tell people 2 just make their bad art bc otherwise they won't make ANY art. an how can they improve if they don't try ?

Ok so roads are important infrastructure. A lot of stuff that's important happens on roads. Now, let's imagine that quadrillionaire Matt Stench has decided that the next big tech innovation is the Wide Car. It's a car that takes up six lanes despite seating only one passenger.
The Wide Car is supposed to be the future, and everyone's going to be driving Wide Cars, even though nobody who makes Wide Cars is turning a profit. Employers are offering Wide Cars as an employee benefit, and getting "nah." Some employers are going as far as demanding their employees drive Wide Cars, and the result is that people take time out of their workdays to get in the mandatory gas usage for their Wide Car before driving home in a regular car.
In spite of the fact that the Wide Car is clearly set to fail, there's an enormous push to expand to twelve-lane roads to accommodate a bunch of Wide Cars that simply will not materialize. This is not an organic response to demand, but a speculative investment that amplifies the existing issues with road development for no good reason.
That is the problem.
Oh and the road infrastructure project is buying up resources other people could have used for literally anything else. With money they promise they'll be making from Wide Car sales any day now.
Okay so what I'm getting from the notes is that when you try to transplant some techbro nonsense into an offline equivalent, you have to be careful to avoid simply inventing something the Americans are already doing in real life

re gooseworks getting banned
i saw someone claim that deactivated account wont have the numbers at the end for a little bit (i guess to prevent url stealing or if the person who deactivates wants to remake)
but i have seen no actual evidence of this. i cannot confirm it for myself, either.
that still leaves two possibilities
one) gooseworks was banned for being a trans woman, massive hate campaigns mass reported her until tumblr staff decided that because she's a trans woman they shouldn't look into her situation any further and promptly banned her, something that has already happened to countless trans women on this website
two) she was actively receiving so much hate and harassment, death threats, attacks, and violent messages, that she intentionally deactivated her own account (like she did with reddit).
either situation is fucking disgusting and shouldn't happen to her or any trans woman on this website, and the fact that it does happen so often is proof of this platforms egregious transmisogyny

i feel like a lot of people in my life have picked up the habit of not letting themselves get interrupted in conversation - which isn't a problem in and of itself, it's just very different from how we used to talk and it's an adjustment. that's fine. but also. not letting themselves get interrupted has not stopped them from interrupting other people. namely me. so essentially i just don't get to participate in the conversation with them beyond affirmitive monosyllables and quips. very occasionally they'll ask me a question.
and like. i know intellectually that if i just stopped showing up, my presence would be missed. at least in theory. but that doesn't stop me from feeling like a ghost when i'm there.

some people have reported being refused refunds that fall outside their 14-day refund window. my sub was 60 days past the payment date, but fwiw I emailed support with my account number and a screenshot of the above mastodon post and explicitly said "In line with your official account's statement, I'd like to request an immediate cancellation and refund on the grounds that I don't share the values of Mullvad or any other company that knowingly profits Nazis. If you're unwilling to issue this refund, please let me know and I'll be happy to escalate the matter to consumer protection." and they issued my refund without a fuss.

i spent a lot of time yesterday drawing for the first time in ages. i've never considered myself an artist or even 'someone who draws', but i had fun.
i think this advice is misplaced.
the first, most fundamental question you need to ask yourself is 'why do i want to draw?' this post - and *every* other post like it - assumes in the first place that people want to draw because drawing itself is a fun and rewarding activity. and it can be, but it isn't necessarily the reason for everyone. i spent years wanting to draw because i wanted to make what other people could make. in that context, 'just do it bad' produced a negative amount of enjoyment - not only was what i was doing not good enough for myself, but the fact that it was bad was actively demotivating because i wasn't drawing for the sake of drawing, i was drawing for the sake of the end product.
the first step to learning to draw is learning how to enjoy drawing. the second step is to practice. you can't start practicing regularly if the practice itself makes you feel bad. once you learn to enjoy drawing for its own sake, even producing something that looks bad still feels fun and good.
