breaking news! new beautiful photo of the best species of frog in the world just dropped
cochranella euknemos, 📸 nuqui_herping on instagram
for everyone in the notes lamenting that this guy is poisonous: they are not! they're just pretty :) since they're a glass frog, their major defense mechanism is being translucent and hiding their blood while they sleep so they look extra translucent and blend in with leaves <3
Sorry, I had to know what "hide their blood" meant--
Glassfrogs make themselves transparent while they rest by taking red blood cells from circulation and concealing them in their livers. Now, a U.S. National Science Foundation-supported team of biologists and biomedical engineers has shown how these frogs become see-through in research appearing in the journal Science . It's easy to miss a glassfrog in its natural environment. The northern glassfrog, Hyalinobatrachium fleischmanni, measures no more than a few centimeters and is most active at night, when its green skin helps it blend in with surrounding leaves and foliage. But these amphibians become true masters of camouflage during the day when they're asleep. "When glassfrogs are resting, their muscles and skin become transparent, and their bones, eyes and internal organs are all that's visible," said Carlos Taboada, co-first author of the paper. "These frogs sleep on the bottoms of large leaves, and when they're transparent, they can perfectly match the colors of the vegetation."

[Jean Ralphio’s lines dubbed over images from Star Wars]: “You just missed the craziest of crazies. Clubs. Girls. Dancing. Naked. MOM?! Argument. Police. Fleeing the scene. Hiding in a dumpster. Coming here. Crashing on your couch for a week ‘cause, [singing] technically I’m homeless!“
No matter how many times I see this, it makes me laugh.
It's becoming clearer that sometimes when I say "use your local library" it's taken as "use a public library" and while that is definitely something you should be doing if you can, I'm usually talking about any library that's accessible to you!! Lending libraries, online libraries, school libraries, all of these are important to use as well!! If you have access to them, use them!! "Your local library" means any library that is local to you!
Hi, academic librarian here— as in, I work at a library that serves a university or college.
A lot of libraries, including mine, have lending and borrowing privileges for community members, or people not attending or working for the university. We also have no issue with anyone visiting the library to use the collection— to pull books off the shelf and read them, either to enjoy or just for your own research.
If you’re not sure, ask. I promise you, we never mind hearing, “I’d like to read your books, please.”
As a librarian I know that a lot of people get scared or embarrassed about telling us that they damaged a book, but I need everyone to know that it actually has a really important reason, particularly for water damage, like if you got the book wet. Tears and such are relatively mild problems depending on the rarity of the book, but wet paper molds very easily, so if you get a book wet and we don't know, it can mold and that mold can spread to other books and potentially become a health and safety hazard.
So when librarians tell you to report any damage, please don't be too scared to! We're not going to yell at you, there are actual reasons why we need to know!!
Periodic reminder that your library more than likely has books on quilting. Books on knitting, and sewing, and painting, and gardening whatever you're into the library probably has books about it. It probably has ebooks too, and magazines.
Your library has all kinds of resources and they absolutely want you to use them.

Exciting and topical BirdNews(TM) for you: a European robin has somehow ended up in Montreal. Nobody knows how. This is apparently the first time we've had one visit Canada, hopefully it will be okay in our winter!
Canada's first European Robin has caused a stir after its discovery in Montreal. The bird was found close to the banks of the St Lawrence Ri
I love that people came running to Stare
This is quite funny because right now in France we have a Belted Kingfisher, the very first time we've had this iconic North American species visit the country. No one really know how it got here either (got lost during migration? hitched a ride on a boat?). People are coming from all of western Europe to watch it
Maybe they just switched places with the robin

my best tip for anyone trying to get back into reading is to remember that you can read books to avoid other responsibilities in ur life and it can become a vice if you play your cards right
Ramon Casas I Carbó, Jove decadent. Després del ball (1899)
As a teenager, life gave me lemons.
I ate the lemons—skins, seeds, and stickers.
Many years later, I wrote a guide to help others eat lemons.
This is a guide to leaving home before 18. It ranks among the most important and most personal things I've ever written. It's also one of our most popular guides of all time. So I updated and expanded it. To make it as accessible as possible, we recorded audio and video versions too. My lemon-flavored heart would swell with joy and citric acid to know it reached people who need it.
But it's a fight share it. Heavy topics like this get muted and buried on most social platforms. Even worse, this administration is deleting surveys and data about it; my .gov sources transmogrified into 404s before my very eyes. Gonna post this, and pray that Tumblr does what Tumblr does best.
How To Leave Home Before 18
Video Version 🍋 Audio Version 🍋 Text Version
As someone who left home at 16, I highly recommend this article for teens in difficult situations.
One thing I would add is that one of my biggest advocates and someone that genuinely made a difference in my situation was an ER doctor. These people have to deal with so much bullshit are generally trained to recognize and handle abuse, rape, etc. You have no idea how many times doctors and nurses have inquired about my home circumstances, but this one specific ER doctor absolutely refused my mother’s explanation for the situation and saw it for what it was.
For anyone of any age trying to leave an abusive home, if there’s any visible marks, bruises or injuries, even from sexual assault, I beg you to go to the ER. Go alone or with someone you trust who lives outside your situation. Even if you’re not “badly” injured. Even if you can’t afford it. It will not be easy but they can fast track you to safety and provide the necessary documentation for your legal protection.
