deriding things as performative is anti third space

im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. it’s nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!

what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

there's nothing more performative than only doing Normal Things in public

I'm thinking back in fondness to my very first, very worst, very most self-indulgent Mary Sue fic. You'd better believe it was The Phantom of the Opera, and the fmc in question was Joseph Buquet's secret niece named Mariange (which I am fairly sure I got from a Danielle Steel audiobook my mom was listening to on a road trip at some point) who was living secretly in the roof of the opera house and working as a flyman while disguised as a boy, with her rippling red curls (a la Kate Winslet in Titanic) hidden up under a cap. To my young self's credit, there was a pretty intense breakup/actual physical fight between Erik and Mariange in the burning opera house.

Please return us to a world where Notp and squick are used for a ship you don’t like instead of just making up a load of bullshit about how immoral it is or w/e lol
