It's the way that everyone wants to make society "safer for children" while breaking down everything that protects children and just tries to babyproof the world for everyone who doesn't need it.

One thing about DWJ is that she wants her characters to feel real. She has said this in interviews! And I love this, mostly because all of her characters come off as little gremlins.

At one point in Howl's Moving Castle, Sophie snores so loud she wakes herself up.

In the companion book, Castle in the Air (no relation to the Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky), the main character has been raised in a society that is hyper-polite. So this man is saying flowery speeches and referring to people with titles that are a full paragraph, but this man is so judgmental, he's just insulting every other person he meets in his head.

In the third book, House of Many Ways, the main character, Charmain, is utterly useless at basically everything because she's extremely sheltered and always has her head in a book. At one point, she decides to turn over a new leaf and become more self-sufficient, starting with being nice to her roommate and picking up the clothes off her floor. She then comes back to find her roommate has cleaned her room for her. An absolutely lovely gesture that is met with utter rage.

And what a mood, I too have been mad at someone for reasons they had no idea about.
