Fun fact: France has a notably higher rate of reported rapes than almost every other country in Europe.*
Iâm not saying all French people should be automatically presumed guilty of sex crimes, thatâs absurd. However, when someone repeatedly attempts to say that rapists shouldnât be punished or pushed out of communities, that victims who speak out are âa dangerâ and âmonstersâ, and is known to be living in France⌠I just think itâs a bit suspicious. Why would someone be so concerned about the wellbeing of rapists and so hostile to survivors unless they had something to hide?
* Yes itâs difficult to compare these rates between countries due to laws on sex crimes and difficulty of reporting vary widely from country to country. However, France has only recently changed the laws to focus explicitly on consent last year (lagging behind other European nations, as seen in this assessment from 2024), and the data from the first two links are from 2023 and 2022, respectively. They only changed because of the prolific Pelicot case, in which a woman was systematically assaulted in her sleep for years by 72 individuals while her husband pimped her out.
