starting to get interested in the wellness to conservative pipeline keeping in mind that the right takes advantage of gaps in the left, and listening to these women talk i can see where theyāre coming from because iāve been there myself (and then theyāll say something crazy about a specific deodorant turning you gay and i canāt take them seriously).
but a few years ago i lost like 50 pounds and it ultimately led to me getting into fitness and making it a core part of my lifeā¦. once i go outside my immediate bubble i often feel frustrated at how antiscience the average american left person is, especially online, when it comes to health and wellness. saying thereās no such thing as healthy or unhealthy foods, that excess weight has no impact on health, larger people can do all the same workouts as smaller people with no issues, itās inherently disordered to want to lose weight, itās inherently disordered to care about nutrition and refrain from foods sometimes, that someoneās body isnāt a reflection of their diet or lifestyle at all, that food and exercise has no impact on mental health, that itās ridiculous to care about ultra processed food, itās paranoid when conservatives donāt trust doctors but when we donāt trust doctors itās because we know about systemic inequality.
and the rebuttal to any concern about health is that this is a systemic issue with community solutions and itās wrong to find individual fixes. someone somewhere lives in a food desert so i, a comfortable office job american, canāt try to eat more vegetables. and itās ok to enjoy the occasional hike or walk but if you exercise regularly (barf) you have a disorder.
but until we live in a utopia with no food deserts and universal healthcare and completely ethical nutritious agriculture what am i supposed to do, just roll over and take it? itās so frustrating that any individualās actions to adjust for a flawed system are discouraged, because itās a systemic issue, while making no effort to organize as a community. a community is a bunch of individuals!! and obviously i have so many issues with the wellness space but that space only exists because people are trying to fix actual issues.
