One of my least favorite tumblrisms is the obsession with romanticizing the nonconsensual suicide mission and torture of the dog known as Laika as part of an unnecessary human arms race. You need to stop making out her killing as a beautiful and noble sacrifice. She died alone in terror and in pain for the sake of a pissing contest of nationalist hegemony between two of the world’s foremost imperialist powers. There is no honor in what they did to her. There is no honor in a death you never asked for. Don’t kid yourself.

You are a not a shame to your culture or your tribe if you don't want to get married or have children. You are not betraying or disappointing your ancestors by not passing on your culture to your own children. You don't have to force yourself into a relationship out of duty, you can have a meaningful and important connection to your culture and even share and pass it on in other ways (like as a teacher) without sacrificing your own happiness and well-being.

If you’re not vegan and have a companion animal near you right now, feel their inhales and exhales. Stroke their head that is full of memories and emotions and love. Feel their beating chest that keeps them alive and you happy. Now tell me the animals you eat and use aren’t exactly the same.

shoutout to the poor vegans. the homeless vegans. the vegans in food deserts. the vegans of colour. the indigenous vegans. the disabled vegans. the chronically ill vegans. shoutout to every single one of you. people love bringing your circumstances up as a reason not to go vegan, and yet here you are, proving them wrong. making a difference. helping the animals. you're a amazing.

I think people are uncomfortable by veganism because it asks them to actually give something up rather than just passively supporting an opinion. You can't just wait for petitions to sign, you actually have to change your lifestyle to be a supporter. for a lot of other causes, it's easy to convince yourself that you would help out should the opportunity arise, but if you aren't consciously perpetuating the issue or impacted yourself, you can easily just go about your life. but most people eat meat, so if you start to think about the animal agriculture industry too hard you can't keep doing it without a lot of cognitive dissonance. so if you just paint vegans as crazy people, you can just enjoy your hamburger in peace. problem solved!

Well I suppose if you compare a vegan who only eats deep fried almonds in palm oil drenched in agave who buys new pleather jackets all the time and imports that from the other side of the planet with a carnist who only eats local poultry from a family farm and sews their own clothes then the vegan could be worse for the environment. I just don’t think that’s the actual dichotomy
