aroace grace is so important to me because yes, he experiences all of the things that make being aroace feel so isolating, but more importantly, these feelings and these experiences are actively used against him.
it is specifically his lack of relationship that gives stratt the ability to whisk him away to work on the hail mary. in every aspect of his life he is seen as replaceable.
take him out of his classroom. there are other teachers. put him in a hazmat suit and see if astrophage kills him. there are other biologists. fly him to a military base to work. there's no one wondering where he is. (not even a dog.)
it's a critical part of his story that his life is perceived as lonely, as sad, and that its not a problem to uproot him, solely because there's no one waiting for him at home. stratt knows this, knows the optics of it, and knows that it makes him a better candidate than anyone else.
so little consideration is given to grace's life by anyone - he barely even considers it himself until it's too late. and that's so real, so important, because i promise you every aroace person in your life knows how it feels to be dehumanized, and seen as less-than, to be seen as disposable, because you want to live your life a different way. because every single one of us would have fought stratt tooth and nail to not go up on that ship and we all would have lost.
grace's life was different, but it was still worth living, still worth enjoying, and worth loving. because he did love his life - he loved it enough to leave it, even if no one understood what it meant. even if they used it against him, in the end. he loved his life and he deserved to live it how he wanted. but he didn't get to, because no one saw his life as something worth sticking around for.
we’re so lucky that gilgamesh survived and is a banger. can you imagine if we found the oldest written human story ever recorded and it sucked balls.
We only find the bangers! This is a really important thing to remember both when analyzing ancient literature and when comparing your own writing to historical authors.
The less brilliant stories don't survive because people didn't make a million copies of them to pass around. It's pretty much guaranteed that there were a hundred other Gilgamesh stories circulating around the same time that did in fact suck balls, and just as many that were solidly mid, but people didn't write them down as many times (if ever), so fewer (if any) fragments survived.
It's easy to get discouraged thinking that 95% of ancient writers were brilliant compared to maybe 5% of modern writers. But really, it's just that 95% of what survived came from those few truly genius writers. Everybody else was out there telling stories too, and finding audiences who loved them, and producing beautiful art, they just weren't lucky enough or famous enough to get their stories recorded enough times for us to piece them together from whatever fragments survived the intervening centuries.
"The [1728] essay Peri Bathous was a protracted dunk on contemporary poets the author didn't like ... The essay is very incomprehensible to a modern reader because none of the poets getting dunked on are remembered nowadays on account of how they sucked..."

sight I saw in san francisco, twice: gaggle of tiny children leashed together being herded along, everyone in hi-vis

i tried to join a haunted house once but every time i jumped out to scare people i harmonized perfectly with their atoms and vaporized them on the spot.
ohh
on my "don't walk to metlife" post I kept seeing people say that drivers would "bergentruck" pedestrians on the turnpike and it turns out that that's a reference to an Undertale meme where a character purposefully runs over people, but the portion of the jersey turnpike that goes to metlife is bergen county, and I had just instantly accepted that there was a term specifically referring to jersey drivers from there. I didn't even question it. Neither would you, if you had ever driven there.
posters: if you try to walk on the jersey turnpike they will bergentruck you without hesitation.
me, unfamiliar with undertale memes, but familiar with driving through north jersey: fuckin yeah they will.
sometimes i feel ive got to
run away

An Oven is a kind of European above-ground umu typically constructed from metal and ceramic. Originating in the 18th century, ovens are primarily used for preparing several kinds of Western-style hāngī, such as Sunday roasts, casseroles, and pies, which are cooked in various types of specialised poti. Ovens are usually constructed off-site in dedicated facilities before being installed in the whareumu, or kitchen, of a European whare. They are typically not able to be moved once installed, quite unlike umu which may be constructed anywhere and are readily deconstructed and moved as needed. Another limitation of ovens is that due to their small internal volume relative to their overall size, they are generally restricted in the amount of kai they can produce. An oven will produce only enough kai to feed a few people, whereas a hāngī cooked in an umu can feed an entire village.
