I love talking with neurotypical people about my executive dysfunction because I'm like "yeah there's this invisible wall in my head that I'm incapable of getting past no matter what I do and it stops me from doing things" and they're like what the actual fuck
if you’re a retro game youtuber who’s comment section is praising you for sticking around for a whole decade i think you do have a moral imperative to at least become passingly familiar with how the romanized japanese syllables are pronounced. like. how did you get this far without that. what are your vids even talking about if you can’t read a basic japanese exclusive title ?? you don’t need to be perfect but you shouldn’t be fucking it up this bad mr 2mil views on my video about 80s and 90s console exclusives

when the subject of "why do people believe things that are seriously wrong and harmful" comes up it feels like you kinda hear one of two perspectives:
"oh, that's easy! it's because they're fundamentally Bad people who want to hurt others and choose their beliefs to justify that! :) hope this helps"
or
"they just don't have access to the same information we do. look at this person who was raised in a cult! don't you feel sorry for her?"
and like, yes, fine, some people were in fact raised in cults, but what i wish people would understand is that the bulk of it is just normal human flaws, like:
they want to believe stuff that makes them feel smart and cool and like they've figured everything out (you also do this)
they want to believe stuff that makes them feel like their emotions are justified and grounded in reality, and that the people they want to hurt deserve to be hurt (you also do this)
they form conclusions before they've processed all the relevant information, and cling to that first impression even when new info comes to light (you also do this)
they pick up beliefs from the people around them because they want to be liked and fit in, not because the beliefs are good or true (you also do this)
they come up with reasons that the stuff that benefits them (and the people they like and identify with) is actually overwhelmingly best for everyone and obviously the right thing to do (you also do this)
they pay more attention to stuff that supports what they already believe and avoid looking in places that might show them otherwise (you also do this)
they listen to people who talk like 'one of them' and ignore others (you also do this)
they come up with reasons to dismiss people with conflicting viewpoints as obviously in bad faith or ignorant or a shill or evil (you also do this)
they fail to take their own beliefs seriously sometimes, and take their beliefs way too seriously other times, in a selective way that lets them do the things they already wanted to do (you also do this)
the very ways they construct the ideas of 'knowledge' and 'wisdom' and 'belief' and 'understanding' are biased so that what they don't want to believe comes under lots of scrutiny and what they do want to believe receives less (you also do this)
you, dear reader, are presumably right about everything and were correct to die on every hill you've ever died on, but the difference between you and someone who's wrong about important stuff doesn't look like "well they're inherently evil and i'm not", it probably looks like a combination of:
natural environment (they would have been exposed to different information than you regardless of their choices)
being in the right place at the right time (your particular profile of flaws and virtues happened to be what was needed to lead you to the right conclusions, they had the opposite experience)
random luck (you doubled down on what felt right to believe but wasn't, but it turned out to be inconsequential, or even right for different reasons, while they doubled down on what turned out to be a horrible mistake distorting their entire worldview)
you do less of the things in the previous list, and over time the difference between you and them adds up
and, look, i also do these things. the nicest and most thoughtful people i've ever met do these things. if you meet someone who never does any of these things, i dunno, give them a fucking medal or something.
i know you're doing your best. we're all doing our best.
People in the notes being like "these are weaknesses of neurotypical people; my autism means I don't have these flaws": yes you do, and this post is about you specifically. People who believe that they're somehow magically immune to cognitive biases are the ones who tend to fall victim to them the hardest.
Yeah sorry I can't come into work today. I accidentally heard Primadonna by Marina formerly of and the Diamonds. So I need the day to be a primadonna girl. Yeah it's going to be the whole day.
horse girl goes to see a psychologist. she says, I feel so depressed, I can't appreciate my own successes bc they always come at the cost of others'. psych says, it'll cheer you up to see a race by the great rice shower who just won the tenno sho. horse girl says but doctor , I am rice shower
Intelligent alien species based on bugs but specifically those moths that don’t have mouths and only live for a week after they pupate. This species’ whole conscious life is actually in the larval phase; larvae are the ones considered people, larvae are the ones with conscious and complex brains who build society, and each instar of the larva is treated as a different phase of life. Larvae become emotionally and socially and cognitively mature without ever becoming sexually mature. When they pupate, they metamorphose into something different and strange and close to mindless, with no mouth and no digestive system, whose only instincts are to mate and then quickly die. Metamorphosis is treated, functionally, like a person’s death, and the imago phase is a kind of proto-afterlife of majestic flight and the continuation of the species. Birth and death inextricably intertwined. Sex is not something people do during their lives, it’s a thing that is done as an imago after you’ve passed on from your life but before you return to the soil in death. Resultant eggs are collected by family members to raise. I think this would be fun.

regardless of whether i agree, i think it’s funny as fuck for artists working on the actual franchise to have stupidly strong opinions about it like we do
on understanding the POV of creatives in a corporate franchise
saw someone complain about me on another tumblr blog (that I'm vagueing about because I don't see the need to be drawing undue attention to). fair does, people can do what they want and feel how they want.
but in this case it struck me as worth opining on a bit because it indicated they felt hurt enough to miss the point of what was being said, and I do think it's an important point for people in this fandom to get- that Sonic isn't entirely some executive suit council committee product but has actual artists who've been involved from the start or near the start with it, and is closer to creator-driven than a lot of the fandom gives credit.
Rambling about Sonic, opinions on Sonic, creative ownership of a corporate franchise, etc follows
A while ago on twitter, an artist I know was complaining that SatAM and AoSTH were not acknowledged by marketing during the anniversary of Sonic celebrations in June. To that effect, I replied something like "imagine they made shitass interpretations of your work and you got away with ignoring it, wouldn't you?". This person sending the anon ask took this as me just openly hating on SatAM and AoSTH, combined with me in the past hating on Archie Sonic. And you know, fair enough, I'm not subtle about my dislike of a lot of the early localised content. Yeah I probably can be reasonably described as hating SatAM, or Archie Sonic in its wide berth.
But I do like AoSTH. And Sonic the Comic. And within this context, they too are "shitass interpretations".
Because that's the thing. My point in that reply wasn't that they're bad. What I was trying to do, what I was hoping would happen and which I think did happen to the person I was replying to, is asking you to see for once these things not as a fan but as a creative. As a fan, I can often love some really weird shit that happens because of corporate handling of properties. Hell, I love Disney Comics, and those are nothing if not a century of people doing increasingly weirder and out of character interpretations of a cartoon mouse Ub Iwerks and Walt Disney created.
But I think with Sonic, fans are often coming in from the POV of being fans of these weird corporate interpretations, which is fine, but unable to consider there being artists behind the concepts. Sonic is not Mickey, despite everything. The people that created Sonic, the artists that made this thing and their ideas, are still by and large there. It's not all a dispassionate corporate product- Metal Sonic or Amy or Shadow's designer is still there. The guys who did programming and designing and conceptualising on this thing from the 2nd game onwards are by and large still there. And now they're even collabing with one of the guys who outright was there from the start. We're talking people who've been there since 1992, more than the age some of these fans have. And who still care, still are involved, still make choices. You might like or dislike those choices, but they're there making them.
I've once tried to explain to someone that while Sonic is a corporate franchise, if there's a scale of "creator-driven" to "corporate-driven" that goes from Usagi Yojimbo to TMNT, Sonic actively still is closer to Usagi. Not that closer, but considering that the games drive the franchise and a lot of their decisions are still by the people who created this material, it's still a lot more creator-driven than a lot of fans understand. Iizuka, Uekawa, Hoshino are still there directly getting involved with even just the comics to opine on them and suggest ideas and refuse ideas and accept ideas.
So within that context, yes. Imagine you had an OC and story. You made it for a company though, so they grabbed it and across the world some people made some weird ass interpretations of your OC and story. It's absolutely their right, they own it. But surely can anyone blame you if decades later, after it turned out your OC and story was successful and you got to keep personally working with it, you turn a blind eye to those early weird takes that were made without you?
That's all I want Sonic fans to understand when complaining about the lack of acknowledgement of early localisation stuff. You don't have to like it, I'd certainly be ok with some Sonic the Comic references - but understand where it's coming from. Because otherwise you tend to instead get takes like "it's because they're Japanese and hate all Americans", as I so often see.
And sure, I did then add that the Sonic movies or Sonic Prime fit this category. Sonic Boom too, I'll add here. I feel these are fairly self-evident- they're further weird divergent takes on the material by creatives halfway across the planet and I think it's pretty clear that the way they get references in other Sonic materials nowadays is primarily down to marketing- see also how Sonic Forces references Sonic Boom but once a few more years were added and it was no longer recent product to sell, Sonic Boom got memoryholed. This isn't an indictment on their quality- I enjoyed episodes of Sonic Boom- again, just how it works.
And yes, if any smartass wants to say this too- IDW Sonic might well go the same way. I think there's some more ties- it's a product intentionally made to be canon with active participation and feedback from Sonic Team (reminder of how for instance Whisper's mask was outright designed by Uekawa) and with them directly using elements of it in their games and products- but the same also applies to Sticks and she certainly seems to be gone in the void for now. So sure, maybe if IDW Sonic ends a few years later Sonic Team'll act like it didn't exist. My point is that that'll be entirely up to them, understandable if they do since it's their character to feel like that about, and the quality of our work is irrelevant to that.
(That is, assuming that in a few years they HAVEN't entirely corporativised the franchise, which I do think is a different direction things are going in. That Usagi vs TMNT scale I mentioned above, I do think with time things will slide more to the TMNT scale. After all, even within TMNT, the property did eventually get sold to Viacom.)
@anthropologist-on-the-loose get peer-reviewed because your shared experience with the subject of the painting really heightened the emotional impact of this artwork for me ( An impact which was already high tbh. The idea that Pompeii was built by generations, buried by generations, uncovered by generations. What if I just started screaming and never stopped. )
finally played archives of trevosa and its awesomeeee. tapping into the part of archae/anthro i never bothered caring about and this time theres #drama
cmon. i used an excel sheet to solve it have fun with it -> https://jamwitch.itch.io/trevosa

Have you guys seen the massive (life-size...?) PK statue they unveiled at Cortona Comics earlier this month? I love it. I really hope they display it at more events.
Max Monteduro also uploaded a couple of making-of videos to his instagram (second video contains flashing lights) which I definitely recommend checking out to see how it was made.
