uuuuurgh. Shaw did not have to “be taught to understand the depth of human life.” Sameen Shaw was a doctor. A surgeon. Who we have canonical evidence went to extreme, heroic lengths to save a patient’s life to the point where even the administrator who dismisses her tells her she is a brilliant doctor. And then when she wasn’t allowed to be a doctor she worked for the Relevant side doing the jobs that other people couldn’t in order to keep unknowing civilians from harm. She’s literally spent her entire life working to save people.
Shaw didn’t have any difficulty understanding people. Harold didn’t teach her shit. He asked her nicely to shoot for the kneecaps instead of center mass more often and she kindly obliged him while rolling her eyes. Not once are we shown her confused by human emotion or interaction. Bored with it? yes. Sometimes impatient or angry but never confused. Stop saying she needed to learn to understand people. She did not.
Sameen shaw understands and values human life and always has.
Also Root didn’t teach The Machine, The Machine (mostly) taught Root. (Which is not to say The Machine didn’t learn things from Root but the entire psychiatric facility arc was The Machine basically trying to whack some compassion into Root) Shaw taught Root. Harold locked her up and tried to contain her and talked at her a lot but it was The Machine who got Root to start thinking of people as other than Bad Code and it was Shaw who showed Root that there was something worth valuing - worth loving again - in humanity.
Shaw didn’t “learn a final lesson” at all there’s a very explicit interview with Nolan and Plageman where they flat out state Shaw’s story isn’t a redemption arc because she doesn’t need to be redeemed and she’s not going to change all that much. That’s the entire point of the scene where she kills Blackwell. She hasn’t changed at all because she never needed to. She was beautiful and loved exactly as she was.
Anyway please stop devaluing Sameen Shaw.
