I am a student finishing my second year of Master's Degree, and I'm currently writing a thesis on the role of Emotional Intelligence in translation. It's a subject that has been brought up more and more in the field lately and I wanted to explore how beneficial it could be to add courses centered around the improvement of Emotional Intelligence in translation studies (especially since, with the rise of AI, emotional intelligence is one of the main aspects that adds value to our work).

I have created a survey for this thesis and am currently looking for translators who are still in the midst of their translation studies, or who have been in the translation market for less than 2 years. The survey takes five minutes, and I would be immensely grateful if some people here had time to take it!

From the questions you asked, I think you need to do more research about becoming a translator. If you’re in university, can you take a translation class to try it out? Or if you’re not in university, do you know someone who does translation and you can see what it’s like to do a translation project? It’s also different between each language pair (usually, you translate from the foreign language to your native language), with what kind of industries are in demand and how much money you can make doing it.

I don’t know about too many practical books about translation…I know more translation theory books from my university classes, but I don’t think they would be helpful to you at this point. You might like to take a translation certification class, or an industry specific class for your language pair. You can see what your country’s translation association (if they have one) might offer, and proz.com is a good website to get started with too (you can find classes to take, see what other translators are like, see what kinds of projects are in demand, etc).

And you ask that to a linguistics blog?! 

I don’t think you can turn hating linguistics into a career. 

Language-related careers can also be based on studying translation/interpreting but you’d be exposed to some linguistics there, too. I think wherever you want to put language skills to professional use you’ll be required to have at least a basic understanding of linguistics. So maybe learning languages is better something you do as a hobby instead.
