So here it is, a little project I worked on with gigantic thanks to @hasello for the fantastic comic and who accepted my offer to translate it in French. Since I'm a professional translator by trade and AI put me out of a job, it's a lovely project to maintain my skills and translate a comic I've grown to genuinely enjoy. Hopefully now that it's also available in French, those who struggle with English will be able to enjoy it as well !

I think this comic is... the best one I've made? Halfway through I realized this
Have you ever read a poem in its original language and felt exactly what the author intended to convey, but then read it translated into another language and no longer felt the same way?
Sometimes I feel that poetry doesnât fully survive translation.
The words move from one language to another, but something is left behind, as if the poem leaves part of itself along the way.
I recently read a poem in spanish that felt deeply profound, almost as if it carried its own weight, as if every word was exactly where it was meant to be. But when I translated it into english, even though I understood every word, it didnât feel the same. It had lost some of its intensity, its aura; it was no longer the same.
Itâs not just spanish. There are many russian, chinese, and poems in other languages that lose part of their essence in translation. Some words exist in their original language but have no true equivalent in english, and there are certain words that carry a lot of weight and intesnsity in the original language but not in english, even if the literal meaning remains.
When translated, the meaning may stay, but the essence changes. What was once dense becomes flatter. What had power becomes more neutral. What once felt almost mythical becomes more ordinary, more explainable.
Perhaps poetry isnât broken when translated.
But it does lose a part of its soul along the way.
Before we get to the meat of the post, may I say chapeau bas to the subtitle translators of Heated Rivalry?
I'm not with them with about 10% of their translation choices and will fight with them on it, but the other 90% ? Damn right. But you are not here for this now.
You are here for a french lesson on how to say "asshole" - because if there is something that was very very well done by the subtitle translators; it was to give us the proper shades of assholes needed to enjoy the show.
Asshole, like fuck, has dozens of translations in French. Because context matter. Also, I'll link all the french for asshole back to Le Robert en ligne and the explanations are mine and mine only as a french speaker.
And so before any further ado;
Learn French With Heated Rivalry; Asshole edition - Episode 1 (Rookies)
"Yeah, he's an asshole."
"Oui. C'est un gros con"
(Episode 1 - Rookies)
Ilya is not just defined as a con but as a gros con here - a big idiot. In the scale of insults, to call someone un con or un gros con is ... light.
Your friend did a stupid prank or did something idiotic? He is un con. The lady down the road put the recyclable in the general waste bin (and you assume she didn't know better)? Quelle conne alors.
It's linked to connerie, which is to do something stupid, to tell a stupid joke.
Connard goes beyond con. Holds the same meaning but further up the scale. Your ex is not just un con but un connard. Your neighbor who parked in front of your driveway just because he could is un connard. There is an intent of being an asshole with the word connard. If someone calls you un connard, it means they can smells the deception behind your stupidity. Where the con will be an asshole out of just being stupid, the connard will be an asshole because he can.
And that's it for episode 1 - see you soon for Episode 2 and more shades of assholes.
I may also do a series regarding the "Fuck" and "Fuck you" as well as do a massive rant about where the french subtitles are no bueno because there are a few wtf moments hidden in this show.

I don't know if you know this, but I write my fanfiction in Spanish. However, my best friend and beta reader and I decided to translate one of my Fedri stories. It's called âUnderstanding You Isnât Enough,â and Pedri is on the asexual spectrum.
Iâve already uploaded 6 of the 10 chapters, and Iâll leave the link here in case you want to read it.
