“you look really pretty… is that for me~?”

sun gave you a cheeky look when you entered the room, wearing an outfit that was quite more extravagant than your usual clothes. to him, it was clear there was a special occasion behind it, he just hadn't figured out what yet.

“oh, you wish it was~” you huffed at sun, trying to play hard to get, which only made sun want to know even more.

“oh, it's not?” sun pouted. “so who's the lucky guy you're dressing up for then? don't tell me you're going out on a date today–!” he gasped overly dramatic.

“who said anything about a date?” you asked and raised an eyebrow.

“oh, so nobody asked you out?” sun gave you a cheeky look. “and with you wearing that and all…”

“unfortunately, the guy that i like is an idiot.” you sighed. “he hasn't asked me out yet, even if he seems so interested in me…”

“huh…” sun pondered over your words for a moment, before getting up and approaching you, a playful smile on his lips. “how about i'll take you on a date then? maybe help you make the guy a bit jealous? and who knows, you might actually end up falling for me instead…”

you couldn't help but smile as you rolled your eyes. the guy you liked really was an idiot. sun really was an idiot.

“you know… sometimes i can't tell if you're really that oblivious or if you're just teasing me…”

They both had crushes on each other and at the same time, that’s pretty well established, but it wasn’t the right time. They had other things going on in life, Blake especially.

She’d been through hell and needed support and to work through some things not just hide from them. That was always what she planned to do, she just ended up with a tag along. Blake wasn’t ready for a(nother) relationship at that point.

She was stressed, traumatised, scared, and so Sun… stayed her friend. He supported her even knowing she wasn’t ready and might not ever be ready. There were a few bad jokes at the start but she didn’t need him making a move so he stopped and was just there for her as a friend. And in the end when their paths went in different directions she wasn’t ’the one who got away’ she was his friend. He literally says “it wasn’t about that” when asked.

She needed him, so he was there, and there was absolutely zero he expected in return for it. She mattered more to him than his crush on her. The here and now mattered more than some hypothetical future relationship or some imagined repayment for his kindness.

And that’s… rare in media, especially with how people talk about ‘friend zone’ and all that nowadays.

In another time, in another place, they would have worked together. They were compelling and they had great chemistry, but they were on different paths.
