<- Chapter 4-> Masterpost
words: 4, 766
As soon as you've passed through the double doors, you're transported to a very colorful world.
Lots of shelves and display cases are visible as soon as you enter, lined with memorabilia. The desk to your left is covered in small bobbleheads of characters you both do and don't recognize, as well as a framed photograph. There are various posters from different forms of animatronic entertainment chains taped up to the walls, bright smiling mascots staring back at you as you approach. In the far back of the room is a massive three-section stage, rainbow-colored curtains covering what you assume is a band behind it. Leaning your head slightly to the right, you can spot a black "Backstage" door with a big sparkly yellow star on it.
"Woah.. you've definitely got a lot. You own all of this, huh?" You lean down to look into one of the display cases, spotting some paper masks of various characters lined in a row.
"Yep," Daffodil walks over to the counter, leaning against it and picking up the photograph- tapping it with their nail. You walk over to get a better look, leaning down a little. "It's a family business. My mom founded it, she's always been passionate about these awesome places."
The much older woman in the picture smiles brightly at you from her chair, Daffodil standing to the left and posing with a peace sign to the camera. There's another woman to the right you haven't seen, who's simply smiling amusedly at them both. The small sticky note below the photo reads "Miss Daisy and Crew's Automa-Con Trip!". How Charming. "She's away on business right now. Something about this animatronic-run water park she really wanted to see? Sounded pretty fun. I'd have loved to join her, but..well, somebody's gotta watch this place. And I..dooon't really trust anybody else to look after all this stuff- she'll be gone for a while, so..I'm in charge for the time being." They make sure you're done looking before putting the photo back on the counter, lightly flicking a Freddy-shaped bobblehead to make it move.
"That sounds cool," You smile a little. "It must be nice to work somewhere surrounded by lots of your favorite characters."
"Yeah, I definitely lucked out in that department." They grin. "Oh, uh, but- enough about all that- you're here for a tour." They dust off their clothes, walking out from behind the counter. "So..let's focus on that."
You nod, deciding to continue browsing. There's so many colorful characters here..and merchandise from ages ago.
"Getting your hands on things like this is not easy. Especially not some of the rarer stuff." They stop before a poster of some sort of Bonnie design you aren't familiar with waving at the viewer, he's a much brighter blue with rosy red cheeks and long lashes. The text below him simply reads "Let's Rock!". "This one was from a Freddy's restaurant back in '87. It was only open for a few weeks- so it's super difficult to find anything from that era, BUT- we managed to find some old posters in a warehouse while we were hunting for animatronic parts. Owner let us keep 'em. Such a steal-"
"Woah.. What's the oldest thing you have?" You perk up a little, curious.
They match your energy, walking over to a tall standing glass case with a locked door. You glance upwards at it, observing a large mascot costume with a pale yellowish-white head shaped like a moon. There's a comically small nightcap on his head, alongside some small arms and legs..no torso, so you assume it goes through the head if someone were to wear it. He stares you down with widened eyes and a stretched out smile, which is..frankly a little intimidating, but he's strangely charming in a weird way.
"That would be this guy. My mom got him from an auction years back. He wasn't in the best condition at first, but..then we restored him, to the best of our ability. He actually still glows in the dark, surprisingly!"
"Woahh.." You stare at him a little more, before a sly grin stretches across your face. You hold up your phone and take a picture of him, sending it into the server and pinging Moon.
(you-sername) @moondancer this you? [sent attachment]
Shortly after pocketing your phone you hear it vibrate several times, the grin on your face growing much more the longer it goes on before you follow Daffodil to some other cases, glancing at the various forms of merchandise inside.
They..really know their stuff. Hearing about the history of all of these different objects and characters is honestly pretty entertaining! You hadn't put too much thought into all this before, but..now it honestly feels kinda fun.
"Aaand, here we have our biggest attractions." They hold up a finger to stop you from going further, going past the backstage door. A few seconds pass before the curtains are drawn back, revealing a few deactivated animatronics. Upon closer inspection, there seems to be a light brown bear with a red tie and matching flower growing out of his head on the leftside stage.. an orange elephant with a purple tophat, flower and black magic wand (magician?) standing still and a purple hippo with a black tophat and pink flower on his chest sitting on a stool in the middle- and a pink pig with a banjo on the rightside stage. There's a notable empty spot in the center, looks like someone's missing. Daffodil soon joins your side again, grinning and pressing their hands together.
"We nearly have all of the classic Mediocre Melodies band!"
"..Mediocre Melodies?" Well, that's an.. interesting name.
"Yep! Despite their name, they're far from mediocre- they're all such wonderful characters..I've loved them since I was a kid. They've been through their fair share of auctions and side attractions, at least until we got our hands on them thanks to some Fazco employees wanting to get rid of them. I can't believe they just wanted to toss them out.." They furrow their brows, narrowing their eyes. "They've always been like that, though. They just love tossing out stuff or destroying it, without any regard for the people who might still love and appreciate these characters."
They shake their head, before crouching down and opening up a small hidden compartment below the stage. It appears to have various show props and small boxes.
"I'm currently trying to find parts to restore the lead singer, Happy Frog. She's the only one we need..and is also my favorite." They giggle. "Then she can finally join her band again."
"How hard is it to fix them?" You watch them search for something, leaning over a bit out of curiosity.
"Well, it really depends on what kind of animatronic you're fixing. Like, you have to take the model into consideration..and also which character. If you were fixing up, say, an old Fazco bot, it shouldn't be that difficult if you've got enough experience with animatronics- and you've got the right parts and cosmetics."
"Cosmetics..the..costumes, right?"
"Yep, you got it- And then, if you were going to fix up..I dunno, one of their more modern-day animatronics, it'd definitely be more tricky. But, not impossible. They're easier to get parts for, but harder to program-"
They let out a little "aha" sound once they find the box they're looking for, sitting it on the stage (since it's probably heavy) and opening it up. "Unfortunately Happy Frog is a bit harder to find parts for, so it's taking me a bit to fix her up. But I'm hoping I can hire or commission someone to help me get her the cosmetics she needs."
You nod, listening as they speak before your gaze drifts back to the characters sitting lifelessly on stage, staring blankly into space. For some reason, seeing them like this makes you feel a little sad.. these bands always take on new life when they perform, so much so that you forget they're merely animatronics. It feels..wrong, seeing them deactivated. Daffodil notices you staring at Mr. Hippo in particular, lightly gasping once they come up with an idea.
"Oh! You should hear Mr. Hippo's stories. He can go on forever-" They shift through the box, and you take the opportunity to see what's written on the side. The word "Showtapes" can be seen in large letters, most likely written in Sharpie. "We've only got one tape for him right now, but I'm hoping to find more of them. Though, for what we've got, he's still got a pretty big variety of stories he can tell from it, interestingly enough- I guess they just recorded several you could skip to on one tape, or something?"
They put the tape into a designated player, before heading backstage again and starting up the band. As soon as the tape begins properly playing, they start talking to one another and glancing around at the absent audience, having charming interactions amongst themselves before Mr. Hippo steals the show, beginning to tell a story.
"..Ah, it reminds me of a day I'd spent with Orville. You'll remember this, Orville, I'm sure- You see, we'd decided to take a trip to the beach, a uh, a nice little getaway for us both. Go see the ocean, feel the sand between our toes. And as we were sitting by the waves- Was it under an umbrella? Yes, yes it was, a.. yellow one I think. I'd had a thought. I- I said to Orville, 'Hey, Orville, you think you could hold your breath for longer if you used your trunk like a snorkel?' And he…."
You hold up your camera to take a few photos of the band in action, deciding to take advantage of the moment while you can. Daffodil leans back down to shift through the other showtapes, probably looking for one in specific. You take the time to continue watching once you're satisfied with the photos, smiling as you listen to Mr. Hippo's story. Daffodil takes a second to head backstage for something else, so you're left alone with them for a bit.
"..And so we went to the ice cream parlor close by. I think I got some strawberry that day, or- or was it chocolate? Maybe it was both. Both never hurts, in my opinion. Nothing wrong with mixing up two different flavors. It helps make things a little more interesting, don't you think? Maybe I should've spiced things up by adding three, haha. I remember Orville struggling to choose between…"
You briefly glance down at the tape player, hearing a little click from it. Leaning down a little, you realize that the tape has stopped playing, but..he's..still going. You take the tape out of the player, hearing him continue to go on and on- reading over some small written notes on the front of the tape.
"Hey, um, Daffodil? This one's for a bunch of Mr. Hippo's stories, right?"
"Yeah, I'm pretty sure, why?" They walk back in.
You hold up the tape. Mr. Hippo continues until he forgets the rest of this particular story, trailing off before glancing blankly down at the floor. Daffodil slowly turns to you, brows furrowing in worry.
..You both stand there in silence for a second, before deciding not to unpack all of that. Yeah, you can overthink about that later.
"Well, he is notorious for being a bit of an enigma, I guess.." They clear their throat.
"..Let's um..let's talk.. business, yeah?" You smile anxiously.
"Yeah, good idea!" They gently usher you away from the stage, back over to the counter.
The two of you take a few minutes to get the boring stuff out of the way, deciding on payment and what you'll be capturing to promote the place. Once you're both in agreement (which doesn't take long), you get to work, taking photos of whatever you can and doing your best to get good angles of everything. You really do hope their business picks up, oddities aside. You can tell they're very passionate about their work.
"Anything else you need me to catch?" You get a close-up shot of a sign with the building's logo on it, before pulling back.
"Uh, well, these are the best parts right now- we're planning on hunting for more stuff soon. Otherwise, we mainly have this backstage area where the shows are set up. Don't worry about upstairs, that's just my house."
"You live in here?" You glance up towards the red staircase. There's a few different framed photos lining the wall leading up.
"Yep- my mom wanted to be as close to this place as possible, so we just live right up there. Nothing too special going on, the highlights are down here." They turn on the lights backstage, and you glance inside from the doorway. There's some sort of large controller behind where the stage ends (you assume for the band), as well as a small set of multicolored steps leading up to it.
"This is mainly just for making sure shows go smoothly and stuff- the breakroom's also back here." They open up the door, showing off a fun looking room with a few couches and chairs as well as a tv in the middle for staff to watch things. There are a few plushies of Fazbear characters you can spot seated politely on a couch, a small part of you having the urge to steal them..but you'll refrain.
"And of course, there's the storage room. That's where Happy Frog's waiting on me to fix her, and some spare parts have been left around until we can use them. Do you uh..want to look in here? I can't say it's anything special, but y'know." They lightly tap their nails against the door once they reach it, a light clicking sound accompanying them.
"I.. am kinda curious, admittedly.. if that's okay?"
"Yeah, of course!" They open up the door, holding it open by leaning against it with their back. "Gotta be a little careful, the door can jam sometimes." You nod and enter the room with a hum, glancing around.
Front and center, Happy Frog sits on a long and presumably very strong table. She doesn't have her face, but her eyes are still connected to the exposed endoskeleton- so she can probably still see. The rest of her body is..mostly covered, but her cosmetics have various tears and..are those burn marks? That need to be mended. Around her sits various stray animatronic parts and miscellaneous costume pieces strewn about, presumably being used for repairs and potentially new animatronics altogether.
It's..somehow even more uneasy, seeing them like this. So exposed. Poor things. You know they're just robots, you know that. But still..a part of you hopes she can be reunited with her friends soon. Not stuck in a dusty room, waiting.
"I hope I can figure something out soon," Daffodil speaks up, noticing how quiet you'd gotten. "I'm sure somebody will want to help fix her."
"It..seems kinda lonely in here, haha." You let your camera loosely dangle from your neck, deciding not to take photos in here. It'd feel like a crime scene..and besides, you doubt anyone would be let back here during work hours anyway.
"Yeah, I'd bet-"
Without warning, the lights begin to flicker. You both glance up at the light in the room, watching as it flickers once..then twice..then thrice.
The lights go down, and with them the power. Darkness surrounds you both. Your eyes lightly widen as they dart around, and you quicly spin to face Daffodil. They let out an annoyed groan, grabbing their phone and turning on its flashlight.
"Breaker must've kicked or something. I swear I thought I fixed that." They turn to you, holding up the light a bit. Thunder roars outside, and you both look up towards the ceiling once the sound of rain follows. "Ohhh.. that's why." They click their tongue. "Gotta go outside and set up the generator. I didn't even know it was supposed to rain today.. Are you cool with waiting here for a little bit, or you wanna go with me? It might be safer to wait."
"Oh, yeah, uh, I'll.. wait here until you get that figured out. It's fine." You give them a thumbs up, and they nod.
"I'll be right back, promise." They prop the storage room door open with a box, before hurrying outside and muttering something. You lean against the door soon after to watch them go, before just kinda staying there once you hear the front doors open and close.
It's..a lot quieter in here without the music playing over the intercom. Rain is muffled by the walls, and it seems to be the only noise apart from your breathing. Against your better judgement, you turn back to glance at Happy Frog.
Empty magenta eyes pierce through you, alongside the miscellaneous eyes strewn about used for spare parts. You know nothing in this room is active, and yet..the staring.. it feels wrong. You try to look away, but the knowledge that they'll still be looking eats away at you. They're just parts right now. It's only parts-
..Or..considering what happened earlier..is that all they are?
Yeah, no, you need to get out of here. This is like every horror movie ever, and way too dark for your liking. You need to get out. You should have a few minutes ago..
Walking over to the door, you pull the box out of the way so you have enough room to get out- ..before it promply swings shut on you. You deadpan as you stand up straight, grabbing the knob and turning it.
..It doesn't budge.
You try again, harshly pulling on it to try and get it open.
Nothing happens.
You try pushing, instead.
Nothing happens.
You turn the knob in different directions.
..You are stuck. You are stuck in a dusty room with a big, staring animatronic from..probably the 90's and several robot body parts.
Greeeat.
You turn back to her, leaning against the door. Daffodil really needs to hurry up.
..Well, it could be worse. She could be active. But she's not, she's simply staring ahead. How'd you let yourself get into this mess?.. At least you're getting paid later..
"..I can only imagine what all you've seen. ..Seems like you've been through some stuff." You look at the burnt patches on her arms. "..It's..good that you're somewhere you'll be taken care of now, huh?.."
She doesn't respond. Of course she doesn't.
"..I'd..probably be happy to be in their care if I were an animatronic." You hold up your phone, trying to see if you can get a decent enough signal to message your friends- but unfortunately fail. Just your luck today.. you find an interesting job, and then you get stuck in a room.
The lights soon flicker back to life, but.. you're still not fully at ease. Her eyes are still on you, and it feels like they stick no matter where you stand. But you know for a fact she hasn't moved an inch.
..Right?
..The sound of nearby footsteps interrupts your thoughts. They're slow as they approach, the owner nearly silent. Your eyes slightly widen the closer they get, and you furrow your brows in worry.
Please just be Daffodil. Please just be Daffodil, please-
The knob moves a few times, before someone roughly pulls on the door.
You back up in anticipation, nearly bumping into the seated animatronic before moving to the side.
Please..
.
.
.
With a few good shoves and a kick, Daffodil opens the door, glancing around before they spot you.
"I'm so sorry about that! I didn't mean for you to get locked in..I should've just helped you out of there before leaving." They furrow their brows, holding the door open wide so you can exit.
"It's..fine! Don't worry about it." You give them a sheepish smile as you walk out, your body still lightly trembling. "Just..glad you're back."
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, don't worry- Buuut I think we should review everything now, it's getting late." You walk out into the main room, avoiding eye contact with the moon costume before stopping beside the counter. They follow soon after, closing the door leading backstage before they join your side again. You both take a minute to look over the photographs you took, Daffodil cracking the occasional joke to ease some of your previous tension. Overall they seem pleased, so that's a job well done.
"Thanks so much for stopping by..I hope you enjoyed this, aside from uh..well, what just happened?" They smile sheepishly.
"Yeah, it um..it was really cool. If you do end up fixing Happy Frog..I'd..like to see someday, if that's alright?" You lean against one of the front doors.
They perk up a little, sitting on a stool beside the counter.
"Yeah, of course! I'll let you know as soon as she's ready to go." They give a thumbs up.
"Cool, cool..Uhh, I'd better get home now, have a good night." You give them a little wave.
"You too! Thanks again." They wave as you walk out, and you quickly book it to your car. Okay..work's done, time to go home.
"Hey mom, if anything in here was haunted, you'd tell me, right- right??"
Closing the door to your apartment, you slide against it for a second. ..Well. That was certainly An Experience. Had its ups and downs, for sure- but it was pretty interesting.. you're definitely ready to get some rest, though.
Sliding off your shoes, you leave them by the door and make your way to your bedroom, changing into something much more comfortable. Once you're cozy enough, you slide into your computer chair and upload the photos you took, making a post and leaning back once it's up. You can see Sun like it almost immediately, smiling softly to yourself before turning your computer off and plopping down onto your bed, phone in hand as you lie back and check the server.
sunnydaze i'm just saying, the resemblance is uncanny! moondancer don't encourage this sunnydaze [sent attachment- it's a reaction image of a cat smiling smugly at the camera.]
(you-sername) see? sunny sees the vision sunnydaze oh! welcome back, friend! moondancer rolling my eyes at both of you (you-sername) lmaooo hiii
The three of you take a little while to chat amongst yourselves, Sunny recounting what had happened in the daycare that day, and how a few of the children had decided to put on a little performance to try and convince their parents to let them have a group sleepover. You smile reading his messages as he goes on, occasionally chiming in with little comments on your own. Talking to them's always wonderful..
Ultimately, Sun has to go and get some rest, so you decide to go offline too. You sit your phone aside, lying back in your bed..closing your eyes, and waiting for sleep to pull you back into its warm embrace.
.
.
.
Sleep does not come.
Despite being home..you can still picture it, those lifeless eyes on you. A stare from the corners of your mind, a creepy face waiting for you to turn to it.
You open your eyes and scan the room various times, finding nothing. Of course you find nothing, you're safe at home. This is ridiculous. You shouldn't be afraid. It's not like anything was going to harm you-
..But you keep thinking about it. It won't go away. That feeling of unease, the memory of those eyes. Paranoia sets in. You're not being watched, you KNOW that. Why are you afraid when you're safe?
You sit back up, sending a message into the server..silently praying that Moon's still up.
(you-sername) hey, uh.. actually i can't sleep. i think i'm just gonna stay up for a bit moondancer why's that?
Oh thank the stars-
(you-sername) something kinda..spooked me, while i was working? and now i can't sleep without really thinking about it.. i think i'm just gonna sit in call and listen to music, or something.
moondancer would company help? (you-sername) oh, you don't have to if you don't want to but uh if by chance you diiid want to i wouldn't be against it
You join a voice channel, unmuting and sitting there for a second, waiting before you add a music bot. Moon joins soon after, his profile picture sitting beneath yours.
"Hey, haha." You smile, lying on your side and looking at your screen. "Sorry about this."
moondancer there's no need to apologize. i don't mind. 🌚
"Thanks.. just a little..unsettled by something, haha. I don't think I could sleep on my own. Not without..thinking, too much?" You fidget with your blanket, tracing your hand over it to feel the soft texture.
..Tears lightly prick at the corners of your eyes, and you do your best to blink them away before they burn too much.
"It can get really quiet here, sometimes. ..Lonely. So knowing someone else is here with me, while it's dark..helps a lot."
There's a brief period of silence, and a part of you wonders if he'd fallen asleep. ..Did he?
"..Um.. Just..thanks, for.. y'know.."
You trail off as you adjust your blanket, putting it more properly over yourself and curling up into a ball.
"Would..talking, help?"
His voice startles you enough to make you sit- Wait. His voice.
..He's..actually talking with you.
"I- ..yeah.. Hi." You smile, raising your hands to rub your tears away. You..hadn't even considered that you might hear him someday, so hearing him now feels..really nice.
"Hello." He sounds amused. "..I suppose I can do that, then."
His tone is calm, with a hint of a rasp..it rumbles out on the other end. It's..slightly robotic, as well, but you assume that's because of a poor connection or something. Sunny did mention them having limited resources. That, or some kinda voicemod stuff..
"You suppose, huh?" You grin.
"Yes.. Perhaps just this once." He chuckles. So mischievous-
"Noo, don't just talk once..I'd like to hear you more." You notice your voice getting slightly more tired, but choose to ignore it for the time being.
"We shall see..it depends." You can hear shuffling on the other end- most likely movement. As well as..some kind of jingling bells? How peculiar.
"..How was your day today? Sunny mentioned his, but I forgot to ask you." You shift a bit.
"..My day was good." You can hear the jingling again, before something is moved. A chair, maybe? "I read to the children to help them sleep. They love fantasy..the magic seems to follow them into their dreams."
"Aww..that's sweet." You smile softly.
"..Shall I read you a story? Perhaps that will get you to rest."
"Me?"
"Yes, silly. Who else would I mean?"
"Yeah yeah.. Honestly, a part of me doesn't really want to sleep, now that we're actually talking. Buut..that does sound kinda nice..your voice is weirdly soothing to me."
He chuckles again, before you can hear him grab something on the other end.
"Now now..you need your rest. We can talk again someday. But for now..it's time for sleep." You assume he's opening up a book, before you hear a page being turned. Sighing in defeat, you let yourself get comfortable.. "With sparkling dreams, and the moonlit sky..to each little star, I'll say good night..Waving high to the sun and moon, they smile at me and say good night, too.."
He's very good at narration..almost like he was made for it. You find yourself getting lost in his words, slowly closing your eyes as he lulls you into sleep.. your dreams urging you to return to them. Soon the only thing you're left with is his voice, before it gradually trails off..and you fully lose consciousness.
Waiting to hear if you're still awake for a moment, then feeling satisfied, Moon closes the book.
"Good night, Starbeam.. Perhaps.. I will read to you again another day."
He does not leave the call, opting to instead sit still and hum a soft melody. ..He won't go yet. Not until it's time to charge.
..Not until he has to, until he's sure.

Notes: gn human worker reader, you're his assistant, pre virus au, short and sweet, youre not SICK sick but you do have evil ass seasonal allergies, written in one go so i apologize for any mistakes, AND!! im so sorry for taking so long to get to this! life stuff happened but god i still feel so bad for forgetting to get back to this one </3
Word count:
CWs: none
Sniffles and sneezes were nothing new to the Daycare. You don't think there's been a week where there wasn't at least one sick kid, not that you stopped to think about it. Even if it was something as simple as running a little too warm, sickness was still sickness. It almost irritated you how often a sick kid would be stuffed down the sliding entrance of the Daycare by their parent— by now you must have memorized every phone number of the parents who pulled that sort of nonsense, at least you remembered the numbers of the regulars who often left their kids in the care of the Pizzaplex.
Though you supposed that made you a bit of a hypocrite. Because at the moment, you were sitting behind your work desk with a halfway emptied box of tissues— Fazbear themed because of course it had to have the face of the Pizzaplex's golden boy plastered all over it, just like everything else within the Pizzaplex— pulled away from it's usual corner. A rather large water bottle that you had brought home lightly rattled the table each time you used it, one of those obscenely large one gallon bottles you found one day while browsing the store. It was funny the first few times you lugged it into the Daycare, the children got a kick out of seeing such a large thing… but now? The pit of your stomach sparked with irritation and unease as your fingers wrapped around the handle as you mentally prepared your sickly body to pull the damned thing off of the desk. At least the lid had a built in straw so you didn't have to tip your wobbly head back to get a good swig in.
You weren't really all that sick.
If anything it was more akin to allergies, the shift between seasons was always a little rough on your body. Not just Spring, but changes in general and it simply seemed to get worse with each passing year. A part of you actually rather envied the Attendant as it's sunny counterpart bounced this way and that across the padded flooring of the Daycare. Cartwheels and shimmies, like his body was filled with energy. Though… it kind of was, if you stopped to think about it.
Robots didn't get sick in the same way that humans did and that was something you would always feel some sort of resentment for, even if it was fleeting and irrational. Had you truly been sick with something that Attendant would have you sent home as soon as his built in sensors caught the mild fever of your body. Not that it was needed, even the children could tell something was off.
It was a mercy that Sun had insisted on tacking over for the day. Whether out of not wanting the kids to be exposed to your sneezes even if you weren't contagious (because honestly… even if it was just allergies no one wanted to be around someone who was constantly sniffling. Gross.), or out of worry of overworking you.
By the time lunch had rolled around Sun was dipping back to your desk to lean his yellow silicone hand against the corner, feet kept just outside the space that was technically "yours". Even if it was by accident the work desk made an excellent quarantine area— both Sun and the kids stayed away from it. Except when they didn't. Like now, with Sun rolling a small packet of crackers between his long fingers. The length of his orange rays retreated under his round and flat faceplate, leaving only the tips peeking out just enough to let you know they were still there.
It was still a mystery to you about where Moon's sleeping cap was kept… you'd ask one of them on a different day, when you weren't feeling so under the weather. It'd give you enough time to pick your poison, too— to ask Sun and deal with his energy, or to ask Moon and deal with his roundabout teasing. It'd only be a matter of time before the Naptime Attendant got the idea to start incorporating riddles into his routine. Just the thought alone pushed the aching in the back of your head worm itself deeper. Speaking of naptime… at least that would be soon, the lights would be dimmed and maybe you can get away with sinking your head down into your arms and catching a few minutes of rest.
In hindsight you should have called in sick.
Alas, you didn't have any sick days left at the moment.
"I think the little stars know you're feeling a little under the weather, Sunshine, they're quieter than they usually are…" Sun mumbled softly as his double hinged neck craned down to look at your curled form, cheek firmly pressed against the cool table top. Only time would tell if the air conditioning unit stationed directly above your desk would be anything to worry about… but for now, you enjoyed the soft breeze against the slickened back of your neck— head tilting just right to further expose the sweaty skin. If only you could get away with changing out of your work uniform in favor of something more comfortable…
"Well that's good at least, isn't it? After all, when was the last time you had to pull a solo shift? A few months, probably…" You mumbled quietly, the corner of your mouth squashed against the desk.
That… probably wasn't the most sanitary… but you were already feeling sick, so what was a little bit of rubbing your face on a desk? Besides, you were mostly on top of keeping the space clean. How bad could it be—
"How're you feeling, Sunshine?" Sun asked quietly as the packet of crackers continued to roll between his fingers. You didn't really have it in you at the moment to tell them that the crinkling of the plastic wrapper was grating on your headache, so instead you simply peeled your warmed cheek off of the cool top of the desk. You nearly heard the way Sun's worried hum drifted through the space between the both of you, but you chose to not comment on it as you flexed your dry tongue against the backs of your teeth.
"I could be better… loads better, actually." You mumbled quietly, not wasting a second to make a grab for your water bottle. If the Pizzaplex didn't have a strict rule against outside food and drink you'd consider trying to bring in a thermos of soup for lunch. Sneaking in your water was already pushing it, the only real reason you were allowed to bring it in was because you technically filled it inside the Pizzaplex. The water fountains hated to see you coming. You also hated to see the water fountains but that was a whole ordeal of worrying about when they were cleaned last and having to awkwardly crane your bottle around to make sure you actually filled the thing. "I know you said the kids are… calmer today.. but they aren't being too much today, are they? I know it'll get a little crazy during play time later… I might be able to help during nap time once the lights are off— headache… but…" You trailed off as Sun gently pushed the packet of crackers towards you.
They weren't anything special. They weren't even the filled sandwich variety. No cheese, and no peanut butter. Just plain single layered crackers that vaguely shaped themselves into a sun. It was rather cute, actually… at least the Attendant wasn't left behind in the themed food department outside of their candies.
"I think Moon would rather tie you down with the spare blankets if you even tried to get up and help him, Sunshine… I know I'd be tempted if I were in his shoes," Sun's laugh didn't at all feel sincere as his milky white eyes remained fixed on your hunched form.
The animatronic had a knack for worrying. Like they programmed him with anxiety in mind, and if you were asked for your opinion on that that seemed… rather cruel, especially given they made him work with children. Kids weren't exactly known for being careful— if anything they were known for getting into all sorts of trouble. You were pretty durable as a kid, if you do say so yourself.
You only offered a half hearted hum, the vibration rattling through the thickness of your throat— as gross as it sounded you forced it down. Coughing hardly did anything but irritate the already itchy lining of your muscles. Sun never had to worry about the aftermath of coughing up a lung, and that was something else you envied him on.
You could handle a headache.
You could handle the ache. The fatigue.
But why did it have to come with phlegm? What sick God thought that it would be funny enough to bring that into existence?
All of this for some pollen allergy, or something.
"I figured as much, but still… I feel awful for not being all that useful today, and I'd feel worse if I didn't even try to offer to do something." You muttered quietly as you tore open the thin plastic encasing the crackers. At least they weren't stale, there was that. The Daycare Attendant actually did a really good job at making sure the snacks they kept on hand were fresh. Unlike some of the vending machines scattered in the further corners of the Pizzaplex. You had to learn the hard way that sometimes a pizza shaped sugar cookie looked way better than it looked. "But I guess getting a blanket doesn't sound all that bad…"
You pulled the cracker out of the wrapper, and… well it didn't really smell like anything thanks to the current state of your nose. It didn't really taste like anything either as you slipped it between your teeth. Not that you thought it was going to be anything special… how good could a cracker be?
It was a nice texture, at least.
The cracker took up so much of your attention that it hardly registered that Sun's rays popped out from his faceplate at the mention of a blanket. Nor did it process as they clicked this way and that.
"I can get you a blanket! I could get you a pillow too so you don't have to put your head on the desk—!" Sun was already peeling his hand off of the desk. "M-maybe I can get you a few mats too so you don't have to sit at the desk at all!" he added as he anxiously twisted on his heel.
How often was it that he had to actually take care of someone who was sick? Sure he could look after a child for a little while as he waited for their guardian to come pick them up but that was different. On top of that it wasn't like you were seeking him out for comfort.
Not that the idea of leaning against his body and feeling the dull vibration of his mechanics functioning under the yellow casings of his body. That… actually sounded really nice. Alas the animatronic had a job that needed to get done. For a moment you considered it as the packet rolled between your fingers, just as they had slipped between the animatronic's fingers just moments before.
The fact that not a single cracker was left broken inside the package.
"You don't have to do all that, but if you insist— I'm fine with just a blanket," You mumbled softly… but Sun was already well on his way off, only briefly stopping to check in on the children. And to stop one of them from smearing some oozy taffy like candy into another one's hair.
Lunch time was probably your least favorite part of the day… so you did not envy Sun for taking charge on that for today.
