with Polonium being created out of an experiment titled "living weapon - PO-210", his early life (you could call it childhood but...) usually consisted of tests, upgrades, and training from the moment he could transform.
all in all, he was truly a defunct lab rat that was still hanging on to life. he wasn't fit to live at all, not with that unstable spark of his, no matter how many stabilizers and modifications were added onto him...
out of his three technical creators (Megatron, Starscream, Shockwave) surprisingly Shockwave was the one who felt more like a proper caretaker than the others to Polonium (at that stage of life); Megatron was more like a commander/military parent than anything else with Polonium. while Starscream more-so warmed up to him a little later in life, especially during flights.
