The sun was high in the blue sky, the weather warm but there was a cool breeze every now and then to make it comfortable. You milled about on the lawn of your college with the other graduates with your friends as you waited for your parents to find you. It had been three years since you’d begun dating Jaehyun, and he had already graduated and was working full time. He still lived with you, but you had done some recent remodelling; turning Jaehyun’s bedroom into a home office as he had moved into yours. You were finally graduating, with honours, and all your friends had come to watch. Needless to say, this day was perfect.
“Come on, come on, one more,” Johnny called, his phone held up in front of his face. You stood a few metres away, your graduation robe and cap on, with Jaehyun’s arm holding you close to him. You grinned for the camera, as your other friends held up their phones, too.
“Get out of my fucking way, Doyoung,” Yuta scowled, trying to push Doyoung aside and prevent him from blocking the view of you two.
You laughed and grinned for all the cameras before looking down and stepping away from Jaehyun. He sent you a pout but grinned as he noticed your parents walking over to you. He saluted you as he went to entertain his friends so that they would leave you alone, but made sure to greet your parents first.
When you were out of earshot, he turned to Johnny, “Is everything ready?”
Johnny nodded and craned his neck to see where you were, before turning back to Jaehyun, “They’re setting up now. Are you sure about this?”
Jaehyun bit his lip, looking down at his pocket and nodded. Johnny glanced down, too, his eye catching the black velvet box. The lid flipped open and Johnny pretended to be surprised and impressed, as if he hadn’t been the one to go ring shopping with him.
Jaehyun stared at the ring intently, his foot tapping anxiously.
“Guys!” You called, excitedly running over to where your friends were standing, talking. Jaehyun’s head snapped up to look at you, furiously closing the small box and slipping it back into his pocket. Johnny sidestepped so that he was standing in front of him, shielding his right hand from view and making sure you didn’t see the ring box. “I said goodbye to my parents, they have to go home, but! I’m thinking of heading to Joshua’s Diner for a sundae, you wanna come?”
The boys all chimed in, agreeing, and Jaehyun laughed as he threw an arm over your shoulder, mumbling into your ear and pouting, “They didn’t even say goodbye to me.”
You laughed, elbowing him in the side as you walked to the car park, the other boys hooting and running ahead of you, “You talked to them the entire ceremony. And I’m pretty sure they said goodbye to you there.”
He rolled his eyes, a lazy smile on his face as he let go of you to open the car door, “True, I just refuse to believe they love you more than me.”
Yuta ordered a cheesecake, whilst the rest of the boys chose sundaes like yourself, and you all slid into a massive booth. You rolled your eyes at Yuta’s choice, and he poked his tongue out at you in retaliation.
“So, what are your plans now, y/n?” Johnny asked, sending Jaehyun a knowing smile.
You looked confusedly between them, but Jaehyun’s glaring made Johnny laugh and focus his attention back on you. “I was offered a position at SM Co. so I’m going to take that as soon as possible. Jaehyun and I have also been planning a trip around Europe, so we might embark on that adventure soon,” you finished, turning to smile at Jaehyun.
He smiled back, and you laughed as Winwin tried to push Taeil away, who was apparently trying to mimic your ‘loving smile’. The other guys pretended to make gagging noises, but you knew they were happy for you.
When your sundaes had been eaten, you bid the rest of the group goodbye and began the short walk back to your apartment with Jaehyun, your hand holding his easily as you talked.
“How do you think Taeyong and that girl are going?” You asked casually, attempting to make conversation.
Jaehyun raised an eyebrow at you, “Thinking of leaving me?”
You scoffed, “Of course not. We’d have to move you out, and reorganise the apartment, there would be a lot of paperwork… can’t be bothered. I’m content with just sneaking out to see him every night.”
He stopped, smiling as he punched you on the arm, “Hey! I’m your boyfriend, you can’t say that!”
You laughed as began to skip away, yelling in a sing-song voice, “But it’s true!”
He narrowed his eyes and chased after you, the two of you squealing and running the entire way back to your apartment.
Breathless and tired, you leant against each other in the elevator, trying your hardest to fix your hair in the mirrored doors. You put your hand to his head and purposefully messed it up again, and he stood up, grabbed your wrist and pulled you towards him, one hand clasped firmly around waist and the other your wrist. You held your breath as he stared at you, hoping, after three years of dating, he would kiss you again.
He scanned your face, deep in thought, and let your hand go, letting you fall away from him as he watched the doors to the elevator. You tried to hide the confusion on your face as the doors slid open, following after Jaehyun as he walked to your apartment.
He handed you the key, “I need to tie my shoelaces. Here, open the door, will you?”
You furrowed your brows in confusion as he bent down to tie his shoes – which, you noticed, did not even have laces.
When you pointed this out to him, he stood up, sighing, “Can you just do this one thing, please?”
You rolled your eyes, “Okay, make the graduate open the door. After all these years of studying, I can finally relax but noooo, I have to do everything by myself,” you slid the key into the lock, and turned the handle, “there’s no ‘oh, y/n, let me, this is your day’ or-“
You cut yourself off as you walked in and took in the state of your apartment. There were candles littered everywhere, all ablaze, with a trail of rose petals leading to your living room, where a small café table had been set up with a small selection of your favourite take out. The music playing in the background you recognised as the song that was playing in the car on your first date with Jaehyun, and the takeout the same as your order from Xu’s Kitchen, which you had almost every night with Jaehyun and had closed down during your first year of living together.
You gasped in shock, your hands flying to your mouth as you turned around. Your heart began beating faster as you noticed Jaehyun, still knelt down on the floor in the doorway, but this time with the biggest grin on his face and a small box in his hand, “Y/n, will you be my fiancé? For real this time?”
You squealed out of pure happiness, rushing into his arms to kiss him, “YES! YES, YES, YES!”
You heard a door slam behind you - probably one of the neighbours – but you ignored it, grinning from ear to ear with only a few tears streaming down your face as he slid the ring onto your finger, and you kissed him once more.
He laughed at your happiness, his own smile stretching wider as he kissed you back, “Okay, okay, this is the best day of my life, but I think we just locked ourselves out of our apartment with a hundred candles burning.” You pulled back and turned around, noticing the closed door behind you, you happiness not even wavering as you stared back at him.
