Many of you experience IT band pain and have no idea why! You often just foam roll and beat it up! Your IT band pain all comes down to pelvic position, glute activation, and and core engagement. When the pelvis falls into anterior tilt, the glutes and abs are essentially off. When the glute max is off, the IT band no longer gets the support it needs from your back side. The TFL muscle drawn on the side of my hip will have to take over if the glute is not activating properly. See the line of drive from the TFL muscle? As it tightens, it can actually buckle the knee inward and cause knee alignment issues!The goal of this video is to provide you with some quick relief for your IT band, knee pain, and some “referral” pain that you have down the side of the leg. Instead of just foam rolling the IT band, attack the TFL muscle on the outside of the hip! Stretch the hip with a little side bend and drive the hip to the side as far as you can. Hold onto something if you need to. Keep your body very square.The long-term solution to this pain is to align the feet, pelvis, torso, and shoulders and learn to activate the glutes and abs during exercise. After strengthening them through exercise, those inactive muscles will become more active on their own! Tension will be taken off of the IT band when the glute max becomes more active. Watch this video and apply it to your workouts! Lots of great bodyweight exercises require this type of setup. Yoga, Pilates, gymnastics, bootcamp classes, Barre classes, and Crossfit all use this position. When you set up for the exercise begin with stretching your fingers wide and reaching long with them, and then plant them firmly into the ground. Think about twisting your hands into the ground a bit, like you are trying to open a jar (but without moving the hands). Tuck the elbows in next to the body. Don’t allow them to flop outward during the exercise. Now don’t be discouraged when you see how few reps you are able to do this way! It requires more strength to do it this way and we often hear people say they used to be able to do “X” number of pushups and can now only do a few. Quality over quantity. Every time people. Reposting a classic! This is an amazing exercise for strengthening the external rotator cuff (#Infraspinatus and #TeresMinor), but when I see people do it in the gym, it is often done incorrectly. Watch the video and read below, then do 10-20 repetitions on each side, starting with your weakest side. Use a light resistance band and increase it over the coming weeks/months. Keeping the shoulder blade in a scooped position while also keeping the shoulder blades DOWN will put the shoulder in an optimal position for this movement. Many people don’t think about what their shoulders are doing and just simply rotate the arm outward without much thought. This can increase the pinching feeling that people get in this shoulder and you may not isolate the muscles as much. Make sure that the wrist and arm stay straight so that your rotator cuff is doing all of the work, not your forearm/wrist. Focus on rotating the arm (humerus) and not letting the shoulder blade move. Keep the shoulder blade still. When you rotate the arm outward and don’t let the blade move, you will notice that the range of motion is limited… this is how it should be. You won’t be rotating very far. You will get a gnarly burn on the back side of the shoulder.
