her snd jack got married after their first tour in the military. they were freshly nineteen and twenty.
at first, they were strong. a couple everyone thought was perfect. they bought their house together, built a family. she had two kids with him. jackson and jason. they’re twin brothers.
they’re now 17, best friends with robby’s (step) son. having to go back and forth between mom and dad. because they don’t even know each other anymore.
they once were a family. four people who couldn’t love without each other. now? the only constant in their lives were jackson and jason.
her and jack have shared 50/50 shared custody of the two boys, they even work opposite shifts at the hospital they once shared.
y/n was a surgeon, the attending on night shift. now she’s a secondary attending on day shift, she hates not spending the days with her kids, working nights was easier, her kids would be asleep at night and during the early morning hours they were at school.
now, she barely gets any time with them.
today, exactly 10 months after pittfest, that was her first day on day shift after her and jack got divorced, seeing jack come in and not knowing if her kids were safe, was a fucking terrible day.
the boys were meant to be with jack that night, but jake invited them to pittfest. jason came in with jake and leah. jackson came later with an almost fatal gunshot wound.
having to work on your own sons is scary as hell. she and him both freaked out.
y/n sat at the desk upstairs in surgery, waiting to hear back if a patient needed surgery, garcia was the one doing the consultation.
“dr..abbot?” garcia walked up to her. “i changed my name recently.. it’s officially back to dr. l/n.” she asked, turning in her chair. “right okay. the patient downstairs needs surgery. it’s not emergent though, if you want to go down you can.” she said handing over the chart.
“i’ll take a look, thank you doctor garcia.” she took the chart and started to the elevator. she pressed the button down to the ED, and waiting for the elevator to stop.
once the elevator arrived to the floor, the doors opened and she stepped off. she walked into the trauma room, head down putting on a pair of gloves. “what do we got?” she asked, looking up.
“doctor l/n. garcia was just down here?” trinity santos said. “she wanted a second opinion.” she said. “okay, 35 year old female, car accident, internal bleeding, bp 175/85, given 5 of morphine.” trinity said.
“okay, we should probably take her up then, send her up we have an OR ready.” she said, walking out of the room, throwing her gloves away and starting back to the elevator.
when suddenly she ran into someone, “sorry, excuse me.” she said, moving to the side. “didn’t know you had manners, y/n.” it was jack.
“doctor l/n.” she corrected. “oh come on.” jack looked down at her. “we’re not together anymore doctor abbot.” she stood tall, straightening her shoulders. “aren’t you supposed to be picking up jackson and jason soon?” she changed the subject. “they’re at the house already.” he said.
“you left my sons unattended?” she scoffed. “our sons. and anyways, they’re grown. i’ll be back to them within the hour.” jack told her. “well then. i’ll see you monday.” she started back to the elevator.

walking into their first home together, after being married six months, getting married in a courthouse after both gettijg back from their first tours in the military and realizing life is short. make the most of it.
she walked in, placing her bag on the floor. it was a military bag she had recently changed the name on it to ‘LT. ABBOT’ her and jack are both Lieutenants.
they had bought a 3 bedroom 3 bath house, leaving them with two extra bedrooms to fill with a loving family.
the two always dreamed of having a family together, and being separated by military service branches made them realize, better late than ever. she was in the navy while jack was in the army.
jack brought in the last box from the truck. “welcome home.” he shook the key in his hand, throwing it at his wife. she laughed, catching the key. and looking at the small keychain on it.
‘first time home owners.’ in red italic font.
“can’t believe we made it.” she looked up at jack. jack smiled at her, wrapping an arm around his girl. “we did it together baby. together.” he kissed her head.
“i just- you know. going through all that in the navy was crazy. and i never thought i’d be able to build a home with the man i love.” she sighed, leaning into him. “well we made it out and we’re gonna build a home together, and have some babies, yea?” he looked down at her. “babies huh?” she joked. “babies.”

y/n started working at PTMC two years ago, as a surgeon. she thinks it’s going good so far, she hasn’t messed up in surgery. majorly.
jack was back in afghanistan doing another tour in the army. he has deployed about six months ago.
she did a tour right before she started working at the hospital, she did a three month tour. after getting shot and sent home to heal, after that she decided she was done. but jack wasn’t. he’s an adrenaline junky.
she sat at the desk writing down her charts. “doctor abbot?” the intern, yolanda garcia walked up to her. “yes?” she turned to the intern. “there’s a phone call for you.” she said. “thank you.” she said, walking over to the phone and picking it up.
“doctor abbot, speaking.” she said. “doctor abbot, your husband is lieutenant jack abbot, correct?” the voice spoke. “yes, why?” she asked, the worry began to set in. “he was hurt during combat. we’re sending him back home. he needs an amputation.” they said, their voice serious. “oh fuck. do you- um. know what hospital he’ll be taken to?” she placed her hand on her head.
“PTMC in Pittsburg, i believe it is close to his home? easier to take care of.” they said. “thank you.” the phone line disconnected.
two hours later, jack had finished up in surgery and was now in a recovery room, she had gotten off an hour ago, sitting in jacks room.
she bounced her leg up and down, watching jack as he slept in his altered state. a groan pulled her out of her thoughts, jack looked over string slightly.
“hi baby,” she walked over to him, grabbing his hand: “hey..” he gave a soft smile. “you had me scared, jack.” she rubbed his hand. “i’m okay, one less leg won’t kill me.” he shook his head. “you could’ve been killed jackson, that’s the point. why were you even in combat anyways? you’re a fucking medic.” she basically yelled.
“baby, it’s okay. i knew the risks, i went to save someone from our side and someone sent an explosive. i’m okay, i promise.” jack pulled her close. “is this how you felt getting the call?” she asked, crawling into the bed. “it was scary. but i knew they wouldn’t be calling if they didn’t think you’d make it out alive.” jack let her lay beside him.
“i didn’t think like that. they just said you needed an amputation, and i didn’t know how bad it was and for all i could’ve know you could’ve lost two limbs. they didn’t explain anything fi me.” she sighed. “i know love, but im gonna be okay, just gotta get used to being an amputee.” he ran a hand through her hair.

august 20, 2008.
they had just brought two beautiful boys into the world, jackson and jason abbot. jackson named after jack, and jason after a friend they lost in combat.
she had to have an emergency c-section, so she was recovering with jason laid on her chest, and jackson in jacks arms.
“i’m so proud of you, my sweet girl.” he whispered. she smiled weakly. “they’re so beautiful.” she looked at the small boy in her arms.
“like their mama.” jack told her. she gave a weak chuckle. “you’re sweet as can be.” she sighed, contently. “i can’t believe we’re parents,” he said, as jackson wiggled in his arms.
“still can’t believe you named him after me.” jack laughed. “i had all hopes he’d be just like his daddy.” she patted jason on the butt gently.
“i love you baby, i really do.” jack reached his hand to hers. “i love you more.” she squeezed his hand.

pittfest is today, and robby’s son, jake, invited jason and jackson to the festival, she was excited they could go but she hated for jack to miss his day with the kids while he was off.
they had recently gotten divorced, jack still lives in their family home. and she wonders how that’s going for him.
it’s whatever, she walked into the ED, scanning her badge and walking into the back. she placed her bag down in the locker, closing it and going to round with the new med students and residents.
she seen jack for a split second. before he walked out and went to grab his bag. she found robby and began to talk to him.
“he okay?”she asked, looking worried. “found him on the roof. says he doesn’t know why he’s coming back.” robby shrugged. “i didn’t- robby i still care for him and love him. but he, he you know. wallows. he’s harming himself in ways that don’t show and he’s hurting my kids. i can’t do that to them.” she said. “you have to talk to him.” robby stated.
“i get it robby. you’re pisses at me. at the fucking world. if it was jake would you live him to watch his mom kill herself? my kids come first.” she walked away.
after the round she walked up to surgery. taking the stairs instead of the elevator. she leaned the door and waited on her first patient.
hours later, the warning for a mass casualty event started. she ran downstairs and went fu meet with robby.
when she got there she noticed jack, talking to robby about the event.
“what’s going on?” she asked, standing in front of them. “mass casualty. at pittfest.” robby event quiet. she started at him. “you mean why my sons are?” “y/n- its not robby’s fault.” jack tried.
“the fuck it isn’t! if you didn’t give jake that damn pass he wouldn’t have taken jace and jack. robby. i swear to god, if my kids get hurt. i’m gonna blow a fucking kid.” she said. “jack, get your wife.” robby sighed.
“i’m not his wife!” she stormed over to where garcia was standing. “easy tiger.” garcia said. catching her. “i’m gonna kill robby.” she huffed. “it’s fine. don’t give him your energy.” garcia patted her shoulder.
rushing patients in and out of OR’s some making it some not. “doctor abbot, come through.” her small phone on her waistband spoke. “doctor l/n.” she picked it up. “jackson and jason ate down here.” it was jack. “i’m coming down.”
she took the elevator down to the ED, and rushed to find jack. she found him with jason, where he was sitting with a bandage around his leg. “baby.” she walked over to him.
“i’m fine, mom.” he said. “baby, you’ve been shot. where’s jack?” she asked. “i came in with jake and leah. i think he was behind me? i- fuck.” he covered his face. “i’m right here, love. i’ve got you.” she wrapped an arm around him.
jack rubbed a hand down his back. “i’m gonna go check on leah. stay with your mom.” he said, placing a kiss on jason’s head.
soon a red wrist band came in. “it’s jackson!” jack yelled to her, wheeling the gurney into the red zone. “i’m gonna work on your brother.” she told jason before going to where jack was.
“17 year old male, gunshot wound to the chest, through and through, checking for internal bleeding.” jack said to her. she nodded, grabbing a pair of gloves and starting her exam. “he’s out.” she whispered. seeing her sons closed eyes. “hey.” jack said. getting her to look at him. “you don’t have to do this.” he told her. she nodded.
still. she continues her exam. “get me a liter of blood, drill an IO.” she said. “i’ve seen this in the field. i knwo what im doing.” she told jack. “i didn’t doubt if for a second. jack shook his head

she walked in on jack. “what happened?” she asked. “a bullet grazed me.” he shrugged. “jack.” she sighed. “let me see.” she grabbed a pair of gloves.
“i just need you to put this over it and bandage it.” he said, handing her the qutip. she took it and rubbed it over the wound. grabbing the bandage and placing it over his wound.
she looked down, noticing his hand. “you still wear your ring?” she asked, see it. “because i still love you.”
