I remember thinking that there’s no way I could ever be of any use or help to someone else. It’s not that I didn’t want to be, or was unwilling to be I genuinely didn’t believe I had anything to offer. Once I had a little time under my belt I slowly learned that every experience I had, drinking to otherwise, might prove useful to someone else going through something similar. Eventually I realized that helping others, while occasionally useful to the other person, was helping me just as much of not more. It’s like the old method of learning “see one, do one, teach one.” I saw others who had what I wanted, I listened and learned how to “get it” for myself, and by showing others how I got it, I get a better grip on my own sobriety. Rarely do I make what can be categorized as the “best” decisions, but I do try to make the next “right” one as often as I can. I used to get so frustrated by “do the next right thing” because if I knew what the right thing was I wouldn’t struggle so often. Finally I realized that typically I know what the wrong thing is, so if I’m unsure of the right thing is, as long as I just don’t do the wrong thing… I’m making progress.
