Another worldbuilding tidbit from one of my backburner projects/stories. This one from Pantheon, a story about a pantheon of gods, specifically following the newly ascended God of Alchemy: The Undead were created by Myttos (God of Death) as an ill-advised gift to xir partner at the time, Adione (God of Life).
There are two overarching types of undead - the Bound, and the Turned.
The Turned are more numerous, and spawned from the original undead that Myttos made, and then abandoned. The half-life he had been able to give them left them hungry for life, which they would take from living things. As Turned drains more, their physical body, as well as their mental faculties are restored, although they can never truly be mortal again. (Things like skeletons can eventually become things like vampires with enough siphoned life).
The Bound are undead made later — they are more refined for a start — and are made from a deal between Myttos, and a dead soul. He offers them something of life back, and they are bound to help him, messengers and aides to Death.
