Okay so I’m gonna spread this out between 3 different posts 1 and 2 will be the two ways of translating past tense verbs and 3 will be about sentence structure with these verbs.

In order to understand what the past tense of a certain verb is, you need to determine what kind of verb it is. There are two groups that I use: ‘ed’ verbs and not ‘ed’ verbs. So you may have worked it out already but when you take the English verb and make it past tense, if the word ends with ‘ed’ example: played. then it’s an ‘ed’ verb. If it ends with anything other than ‘ed’ example: thought, ate, drank. then it’s a ‘not ‘ed’ verb. (of course there are some exceptions to this rule but not many) Now that we’ve worked out what type of verb it is, we can translate it. 

'ed’ verbs: Start by translating the present tense verb. Let’s use ‘play’ as an example which translates to ‘spielen’. Now place a ge at the start of the word making ‘gespielen’. Remove the ‘en’ from the ending ‘gespiel’. And lastly add a ‘t’ to the end. “gespielt”. Made, said, and heard, fit in this group as well, even though they don’t end in ‘ed’. Here are some examples

Dance = tanzen – getanzen – getanz – getanzt.

Buy = kaufen – gekaufen – gekauf – gekauft

Make = machen – gemachen – gemach - gemacht

Hear = hören – gehören – gehör – gehört

Say = sagen – gesagen – gesag – gesagt

(okay I know that most of these aren’t actually ‘ed’ verbs but this rule works a lot better with the not ‘ed’ verbs. And there are of course plenty more verbs in this group)

Now, for the words that don’t end in ‘ed’, they each need their own sets of rules which really doesn’t follow any pattern. I’ll write these out in a separate post because I think that’s enough words for one post.

“I think you’re going to love my socks.”

“Are you wearing two layers of socks like I am?”

“Can I get a ‘hoi-ya!’?”

“Hoi-ya!”

“I’m going to chuck wood.”

“Can we burn that book of Dad jokes?”

“BURN IT. BURN IT WITH FIRE.”

“What else are you going to burn it with, ice?”

“’Doctor, Doctor, I keep thinking I’m a mouse trap!’ ‘Then snap out of it!’”

*groans of pain and hatred for Dad jokes*

“Put that away, [Name], no one wants to see that.”

“His mudder.”

“Are you saying I have ten centimetre heels?”

“You know your life is going downhill when your teacher sings ‘You’re the One That I Want’ to you.”
