Hello, you say in your about you are FAFAB. I've heard of AFAB but not FAFAB. What does it mean?
FAFAB and FAMAB are gender assignment labels used by intersex people to emphasize that we were forcibly feminized or masculinized.
Usually, this involves gender assignment surgeries and medical procedures in infancy and childhood, and forced HRT in adolescence. However, even adult intersex people can sometimes be subjected to forced feminization/masculinization if they are disabled and their medical rights are given to the state/their families.
In my case, my FAFAB identity means that when I was an infant I underwent invasive surgery, and in childhood I underwent (violent and unexplained) medical procedures to ensure my vagina was stretched sufficiently for penetrative intercourse, as well as being put on HRT permanently from age 12.
Ultimately, of these procedures, the only one I would (and indeed have) chosen to undergo as an adult is the HRT, but there is no way for me to know how much of that is psychologically tied to the fact that it was imposed on me without my consent as a child.
Even regarding HRT, as an adult, I have elected to receive a completely different regimen than the one forced on me as a child. What I dealt with from age 12-20 was a disaster of hugely dangerous medical side effects that ultimately led (in part) to the compromised immune system I now have forever.
