I posted a silly picture of my latest NB sim, Presley, in my Sims group, with the caption “also, guess who successfully came out to their family as nonbinary transgender??”. The reactions and comments were horrendous. This is a group of gamers who are mostly Liberal Millennials. They make fun of President Trump often, either by making a caricaturistic sim and letting others joke about killing him, or by posting a photo of the First Family and comparing them to idle sims. The group is largely anti-Trump and Liberal. They're also largely transphobic. Gee, I thought only Conservatives were transphobic!!1!
Here's a list of the reactions and comments:
– Someone left an “angry” reaction, and explained it with “I'm not transphobic but when you make up genders is where I draw the line”
– “I'm sorry, not here to hate but it's just hard to agree with someone who says they don't “have a gender” (which they gleaned from informative NB articles I linked)
- “non-binary is saying you don't have a gender though..”
– Someone called it a Tumblr gender.
– Another said there were only two genders. When someone responded and linked an article about intersex, the others laughed and invalidated it as if intersex were one of their “made-up genders”
– Someone said I was mentally ill, and proceeded to harass the thread with transphobic reactions and memes like “#triggerd”
- same person later tagged me and said “I identify as a nice guy I want to be identified as such”
- to which another replied “Don't you two start that here. I will turn this car around and drive straight home.”
– “Always fun to watch a comment thread collapse into a battle royale for the moral high ground xD”
– “I think we all knew this was gonna turn into a shit show”
There were half as many supportive comments (not featured) as there were negative. Something like this has happened before in that group. I don't remember what the context was, but there was an appalling amount of queerphobia present.
What pisses me off the most is the politics of this. Society wants to say Conservatives are transphobic while Liberals are not. Tell me, then, why I got so much transphobia in this Liberal group than in my Conservative groups? When I make such announcements on my Gay Republicans page, the reaction is overwhelmingly supportive—when I officially came out to them a year ago, and again when I announced I was now out to my family.
But this group of Liberal Millennial gamers...I mean, they'll attack the President, and then attack trans people in the next breath, so... *shrug* Just goes to show you, political stereotypes don't always hold up.

rant about trans people
So first off. Did you know that less than 1% of the American population are transgender. That's not a lot of people. At all, so the probability that the amount of people that claim to be trans are most likely not. I have many trans friends, do I believe all of them are trans? No, I do not, but do I respect their pronouns and chosen names, of course! Another thing is non-binary, gender fluid, other kin, etc. I don't believe these things are real, I'm sure your edgy self feels like you don't have a gender or that you're a wolf, but it's completely ridiculous. I'm a very open person, but I'm a scientific person, so until there's actual evidence that these things exist, I call bullshit. There is evidence of trans people being real, it actually affects the brain. All of you people who identify as these insane things, both sexually, romantically, and concerning gender, you make the trans community look ridiculous. You want people to take the trans community seriously? This is why people don't take the trans community seriously, people like that, and to the people who say you don't need dysphoria to be trans, that's completely ridiculous. By that standard, you're not suffering, you don't understand the complete sufferage of being trans. You need to have physical and mental dysphoria to be trans. So all of you people who want oppression tokens, could you please step down? You're why we, as a community, are discriminated and taken as jokes, we will never progress in this area because of you.
