Robby having that seven-week itch was never the problem for Dennis. He knew what he was getting into and, even if silently wanting more, had gotten used to taking what he could get throughout his life. His issue is that Robby, during these seven weeks, promised him stuff that would extend far beyond the rough seven weeks that was silently agreed upon. For his credit, those six-ish weeks were clearly Robby giving him what he'd promised, even if it wasn't known to the rest of the ED. Which is why, when Robby started to dwindle and push Dennis away around that seven-week mark, Dennis tried to "behave" (for lack of a better word).
He'd always been used to being disappointed or having promises broken growing up, so he was praying (both metaphorically and physically) that he wasn't seeing things right. Robby, on the other hand, didn't see an issue. He assumed Dennis knew that this was only temporary and couldn't realistically exist.
But with Robby continuing to push Dennis away and become tired at his implication of things continuing, Dennis loses his shit. Not actually, but he sure as hell just leaves Robby's apartment. Even though Trinity's apartment is a good 30-minute walk away, he was fully ready to leave (yes this is also Whitsantos bestfriend propaganda). The worst part is that Robby let's him leave, convinced he'll come back-- Robby assumes that he knows Dennis, when, clearly, he doesn't.
It's only clicks for Robby when Dennis "accidentally" let's it seep into work (so does Trinity because you KNOW he spilled as soon as he got to her apartment). It never affects his work with patients or the rest of the staff. He's just choosing to run things by other residents or, if needing an attending, Al-Hashimi. Completely ignoring Robby. It's only when he sees Dennis consulting Al-Hashimi for a patient Robby had been overseeing, then immediately noticing Trinity ignoring him as well, that he realizes he fucked up with his avoidant tendencies.
Maybe they make up, maybe they don't. I haven't gotten that far yet
(And maybe I'll work this into a full fic. Who knows :p)
