Iâm on Tumblr in my universities public library in the good year of 2021 but anyway
I was doing research on ADHD in regards to how itâs a disability and came across the social construction theory of ADHD. I knew this existed, but I never really got into the depths of it because it pissed me off.
This is for a class thatâs basically a disability studies class though, and I came across the theory while looking for ADHDs connection to the social theory of disability. Which looking more into it, I realized that while the social theory of disability and the social construct theory of ADHD are similar, but they arenât the same.
Which is important, because shit that recites the social construct theory of ADHD made me defensive towards the social theory of disability.
I think I just realized that the social construct theory of ADHD, and why I hate it so fucking much, is basically taking the stereotypes of ADHD and blaming ADHD itself for those stereotypes. Itâs diagnosed in children who are all hyperactive and inattentive naturally, you grow out of it, itâs a personality thing, more boys are diagnosed than girls, different countries diagnose it at different rates, etc.
Instead of saying that ADHD is still distressing to many and that distress needs to be recognized in the diagnosis, while looking to see where that distress comes from, it argues that ADHD is simply normal and not distressing at all. Which a lot of us with ADHD would know thatâs a huge fucking lie.
The social model of disability argues that most (not all) of the distress from disability is due to how society treats those with disability. It argues that those with disabilities are natural variations. It doesnât argue that we canât struggle or that we shouldnât ever need any medical intervention.
Social Construction of ADHD: The individual has the diagnosis from not fitting a societal norm, the human behavior itself is normal and should not be adjusted. The diagnosis is subjective, meaning that the existence of ADHD is more or less unproven by scientists. Even the perceived differences can be caused by the environment, such as too much sugar. People with ADHD do not perform well within society because ADHD is the medicalization of unfavorable traits in society and nothing more.
Social Theory of Disability with ADHD: While sometimes the diagnosis of ADHD can be from societal norms, plenty of those with ADHD struggle and show prominent differences from those without ADHD. ADHD should have methods to cope with if the individual chooses to use them, but the individual deserves the right in denying that treatment. Life with ADHD would be made easier with letting the person work in a low distraction environment, giving them a stimulating but not over stimulating workload, allowing them to move around, having a more relaxed schedule that doesnât penalize them for being late, and giving them more time for projects. Society fails ADHD, ADHD is not a diagnosis for people failing society.
Both have the message that ADHD isnât something to be âotheredâ or shamed by but they have them in very different ways. The difference is that one acknowledges ADHD as a variation and the other doesnât see it as much of a variation at all.
That feeling when you get a sudden burst of energy and motivation to do something creative or productive right as youâre getting in bed. And you know if you donât do it right away the motivation will die, but if you do it you will be up all night and not wake up on time for work or school. Totally not my current situationâŚ.
stupid vent, but i have an opinion; the "bad at school" adhd stereotype? isn't inherently bad. hopefully before anyone tries to burn me at the stake, i'm just gonna say that i was one of those adhd kids who was 'bad at school'. i failed all of my classes, couldn't focus in class, etc etc etc. i was the DEFINITION of 'bad at school'. obviously, this isn't all adhd people, but ngl i see far more rep of adhd-ers who passed school (even if only barely) without getting a diagnosis (because they were good in school), and the 'bad at school adhd-er' is always seen as rare and generally looked down upon, at least from what i've seen. i didn't start passing school until 9th grade, and that was because i got diagnosed and was prescribed with medication (adderall). i'll be honest, while it wasn't perfect, the medication was a LIFESAVER. i could deal with the side effects as long as i could actually do my fuckin work, which was the first time in YEARS i could do it. i passed with flying colors! i found out i was actually INTELLIGENT instead of a lazy idiot like my dad always said. and not gonna lie, seeing the "bad at school" adhd stereotype being seen as purely bad is REALLY annoying and lowkey insulting, because i LIVED that. i experienced that for YEARS. i suffered trauma because of it! and i'll be honest, it's NOT a bad stereotype to put on your characters. what IS a bad stereotype is that the adhd character is STUPID. which is very common in all KINDS of media. and i'll be honest, the two stereotypes kind of go hand in hand, but you can very easily separate them. you can make your adhd character bad at school while making it clear that they're intelligent, just not fit for school. there's MANY adhd-coded characters that are written off as stupid despite very clearly just being,, i dunno, forgetful, or not as quick to put together the dots (wally franks and michael j caboose for example). they're often put up as stupid and hyperactive and oblivious, when they clearly just have classic adhd symptoms. and naturally, it's assumed that they were bad at school. now THIS is bad, but inherently the 'bad at school' stereotype isn't what i'd call harmful. i'm sure it's insulting to some adhd-ers, but personally i LOVE seeing adhd characters who weren't great in school because most adhd rep by adhd-ers makes adhd characters having passed school just fine, but you never see adhd characters who didn't have that ability. point is, adhd characters being bad at school isn't bad rep, it's just how you execute it.
The restless, overactive and fidgety child who stands out from his peers has been around, presumably, as long as children have been around. The first known reference to a hyperactive child or one with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs in the poems of the German physician Heinrich Hoffman, who in 1865 described 'fidgety Philip' as one who 'won't sit still, wriggles, giggles, swings backwards and forwards, tilts up his chair... growing rude and wild'.

adhd isnât just being distracted and not being able to understand things. adhd isnât running after a squirrel or staring at a shiny object for half a day. Even though those things can happen, adhd is more than what stereotypes deem it to be. adhd is feeling like a failure 24/7 because of the debilitating symptoms of RSD. its having sensory issues that make it difficult to do simple things because they irritate you and nearly cause you a mental break down. its extreme impulsiveness that can put yourself and others in dangerous positions. its having ways to cope that are not exactly the best and can often further deteriorate your mental state. so when people donât get a math problem or lose their train of thought and say âoh haha guess I have adhdâ or any thing else like that, not only does it invalidate us who truly have it, but it angers us to know that the struggles that come with having this disability are thrown under the rug and laughed at as if adhd is just something made up to excuse laziness, a short attention span, and a way to get Adderall to get high.
I related wayyyyyyyyy too much to Grogu when he got distracted by all those frogs. I too am easily distracted by snacks đ
I hate having adhd istg it's not just all "oh I'm so distracted hehe!" It's losing things and finding them in a obvious spot then feeling bad. It's not being able to stay still for more then 10 minutes. It's being neurodivergent.
